The inspiration for my Missa Pro Defunctis (2018) was Fauré's Requiem in which he ignored the fire and brimstone text of the Dies irae and Tuba mirum in the Sequence of the Requiem Mass. And consequently he created a work that is peaceful, tranquil and uplifting. I'd like to think of death in that way.So, I proceeded by taking the exact text that Fauré used in his work, and instead of a large chorus and full orchestra I decided to do a chamber version. It is scored for SATB (single voices), flute, clarinet, string quartet, double bass and harp.The movements, as in the Fauré, are:1. Introit and Requiem2. Offertory3. Santus 4. Pie Jesu5. Agnus Dei6. Libera me7. In paradisumThe entire work has a duration of ca. 29 minutes.Missa Pro Defunctis (2018) is dedicated to the residents in the Protestant Cemetery in Rome.

It is appropriate for schools, students and community choral ensembles. The piano bass line may be doubled by electric or stand-up bass to add even more punch. The vocal ranges are all within normal ranges. All parts include some challenging syncopation. There is a fair amount of unison singing along with sections of four and five part harmony. I adapted and expanded an anonymous poem, The Oyster, to help emphasize the need to make the best of one's life circumstances. This is the Vocal Score, with Piano Reduction, of William Hawley's Make Me Thy Lyre, for SSAATTBB Chorus and Chamber Orchestra, setting the final stanza of Ode to The West Wind by Percy Bysshe Shelley (1820), with permission to download, print, and photocopy as many copies as are deemed necessary for the conductor, rehearsal pianist, and chorus for rehearsal and performance. The work was commissioned by The University of Arizona School Of Music, to be premiered during the U of A Choral Conducting Institute, June 13-15, 2007, Dr. Bruce Chamberlain, Director. The Institute was cancelled that year, however, thus the work was not premiered. The audio clip is the complete Composer's Demo.
