I was inspired to write The Peace Prayer as this particular prayer has proven to be an uplifting source of strength, encouragement, and renewal throughout my life, especially in times of adversity. As there is no repetition in the words of the prayer, the piece is through-composed with a significant amount of text painting for textual emphasis: for example, the gradual building of the D major chord of the word light to paint a transformation as light dispels darkness. In the final measures, the Amen progresses from B-flat major to C major to D major, portraying hope, joy, and peace as the soul is uplifted and enlightened by the power and majesty of this incredibly inspiring prayer.

This piece for six-part choir (SSATTB) is a neo-classic approach to a very well-known text attributed to Saint Francis of Assisi, which is one of the most beloved prayers for the roman catholics. It displays a rich sonority, suitable for medium/large choir, alternating moments of modern dissonant harmonies and almost jazzy/bossa-nova sections. It is based primarily on chords mounted on intervals of fifths for the lower voices and fourths for the upper ones.

El Malei Rachamim (God full of compassion) is a Jewish prayer for the departed that is recited at funeral services, on visiting the graves of relatives (especially during the holy month of Elul), and after having been called up to the reading of the Torah on the anniversary of the death of a close relative. The prayer originated in the Jewish communities of Western and Eastern Europe and since the end of the Holocaust, the prayer has been adapted as a memorial prayer for the victims of the Holocaust and Nazi persecution. The full text (which has been freely adapted in this piece): O God, Who art full of compassion, who dwellest on high, grant perfect rest in Thy Divine Presence to all the souls of our holy and pure brethren whose blood was spilt by the murderers in Auschwitz, Belzec, Bergen Belsen, Dachau, Majdanek, Sobibor, Treblinka and other extermination camps in Europe; who were killed, strangled, burned and buried alive for the sanctification for Thy Name. For whose souls we now pray. May their resting place be in the Garden of Eden, may the Master of Mercy shelter them in the shadow of His wings for eternity; and may he bind their souls in the Bond of Live. HASHEM is their heritage, and may they repose in peace in their resting places. Now let us say: Amen This setting features of mix of traditional and contemporary composition methods to create a highly emotional and deeply meaningful experience for performer and listener. Prayer of Saint Francis is based on the hymn Make Me a Channel of Your Peace by Sebastian Temple, which uses text from a prayer written by Saint Francis of Assisi. Part of the inspiration for the piece comes from Madison CRC, a church I belonged to and worked in for about five years, which was focused on interracial development and combating racism. It is often clear to a person who has belonged to any group of people (for example, a multi-racial church or a choir), that it takes a lot of effort for different people to unite harmoniously to achieve something greater than what any lone person could accomplish. This song is a prayer about unity, about peace between people who are different from each other. Different, in this case, refers to every sort of difference, whether in race, ethnicity, background, social class, gender, sexuality, age, religion, politics, personality, preferences, musical ability, etc. This piece includes different musical styles working in tandem, thus illustrating that differences can work together to create beauty and harmony. Though written by Christians, this is not just a prayer for Christians, but for all of us, that we may treat those around us with love, care, and respect, thus bringing peace to our communities, both locally and globally. I am honored to have had this piece premiered by the Berkshire Choral Apprentices of 2018 at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY.

Alan Bullard's Canticle of Freedom (A Song for Peace), written in 1999 and first performed in 2000, is a prayer for a new millennium of freedom and peace, and each of the four movements takes as its starting point one of the verses from the nineteenth-century Christmas hymn 'It came upon the midnight clear'. It is scored for mixed choir, children's or youth choir, soprano and baritone soloists and a moderate size orchestra. The first movement tells of a solemn, still, and peaceful earth, and the second of a jubilant heaven. The third movement speaks of 'two thousand years of wrong' - the wars and persecution that have disfigured the last two millennia - and the last movement leads us from death to life, with a positive and joyful hope for the future: in the words of the hymn: 'When peace shall over all the earth its ancient splendours fling'. The text has been selected from a variety of poets and sources, ranging from mediaeval times to the present day. It might also be particularly suitable for Remembrance services.The Jacobean poet Phineas Fletcher’s passionate prayer of repentance is here set to music for SATB choir and organ. In a series of pulsating descending scales the author’s words express heartfelt remorse for his sins, reflecting the story of Jesus and the weeping woman in Luke 7:36ff. This is real, deep sorrow and regret, looking to the Prince of Peace for forgiveness: at one poignant moment the music reaches a point of stillness as the slow tears continue to fall. The weeping then turns to anger, crying for vengeance, because sin doth never cease. The music rises to an intense climax, but suddenly vanishes; the anger is, after all, self-directed. Finally the text returns to a prayer of supplication to drown all my faults and fears, and the harmonies end with a hope-filled hint of future healing. Drop, drop, slow tears, and bathe those beauteous feet, which brought from heaven the news and Prince of Peace. Cease not, wet eyes, his mercies to entreat; to cry for vengeance, sin doth never cease. Pax e concordia means peace from harmony. The piece combines the texts Dona nobis pacem, Shalom chaverim, and Salaam aleykum. All of these texts, from three major world religions, speak of peace and are combined here in a prayer for peace delivered through music. This work was inspired by Renaissance motets and should be performed using the same performance practices. Purity of tone should be emphasized and vibrato kept to a minimum. Moving lines should be sung expressively, while longer tones should swell. (Unless otherwise indicated.) The tempo may be slowed, depending on the acoustical quality of the performance space.

The Nunc Dimittis - Let They Servent Depart in Peace!, was written by Joseph Baker in 2012 and performed by the Summer Choir of Calvary Lutheran Church of West Chester, PA during services. Beginning with a prayerful stating of the text and alternating men's and women's parts, it dramatically grows to a very strongly sung 4-part hymn of praise - Praise the Lord! Let all that is within me praise his holy name! It ends quitely and reverntly. This unique and stirring anthem is quite fun to sing for accomplished choirs.

This piece was one of those that wrote itself. After visiting the concentration camp, Buchenwald, in Germany, I felt I had to write something as a memorial piece for the victims of that camp. The english text of Agnus Dei came across as the perfect text to pair up with the prayer for the dead. Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world, grant us peace. and Grant unto them eternal rest, O God. And let perpetual light shine upon them. And may the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God the Father, rest in peace. Provided the textual roadway for the music to be built upon. .
