I began playing it unattached to any tune and I just liked the way the line descended in the left hand and how I had to find voicings in the right hand that made harmonic sense – like a puzzle. As I was playing around with this puzzle, thoughts of my father were swirling around in my head – I was at the end of a 4 year period of separation from my parents owing to the fact that I’m a Canadian expat living in the US and the borders were closed for a long time because of Covid, and then I had work visa issues and my parents were getting older before my eyes. They were also losing friends to cancer and other ailments and my dad, in particular, had experienced the loss of many close family members and friends during our separation and it was taking a toll. One day I sat down and played the now familiar-to-me ostinato but randomly I started to sing “Beyond the Sea†over it and it fit perfectly. I thought it a happy coincidence. As the days went on I committed to putting my ostinato with Beyond the Sea and the lyrics started to seep into my brain. I have, of course, heard these lyrics many times before, (who hasn’t seen Finding Nemo?) but the lyrics didn’t mean what I thought they meant… They’re NOT about the ocean, they are about my dad!!! Well, kind of… I realized, through careful reflection and by slowing the words down, that the lyrics are talking about a person in heaven who is patiently waiting for their partner to join them. Somewhere beyond the seaShe’s there watching for me…It’s far beyond the starsIt’s near beyond the moon And the lyrics end with them meeting, “We’ll meet beyond the shore, we’ll kiss just like before,†and the song ends with: “and never again I’ll go sailing.†It’s like the big bang went off in my head about why all these thoughts of my dad, and his friends, and this arrangement, and what it all meant suddenly just MADE SENSE and I was able to start formulating a plan. Performance Suggestions: The improvisation solo in the middle should be free of any traditional “scat syllables†and should be more of a lament. Listen to singers like Aubrey Johnson improvise on ballads for inspiration. An idea for that improv section might be to have a male singer start the improv, then a female singer joins (as if together in heaven) then they sing letter F together (warning: will cause tears…). All solo sections do not have to be sung as written – soloists can take liberties with the melody as the spirit moves.

These gems of Christian living were taught by Jesus as the initial part of the most well-known of his teachings called The Sermon on the Mount. The word “beatitude†comes from the Latin “beatitudo†meaning “blessedness.†Each of the eight beatitudes in this book consists of two phrases: the condition and the result. Together, these illustrate a set of ideals focusing on love and humility, echoing the highest of Jesus’ teachings on spirituality and compassion. Each also promises a future reward, and the themes appear to escalate from beginning to advancing levels of responsibility and spirituality as the Sermon progresses. By the end of the Sermon a recipient would have earned the reward to stand ceremonially in the presence of God, and to ultimately gain the greatest reward of living with Him in heaven. The purpose of this book is to praise our Lord through song and text, rejoicing in the gifts we receive from Him as we do as He suggests. Though still a challenge, especially with the optional vocal soli, this Conniff-themed edition has been adapted from a more difficult version previously performed by Vocalogy on their 2005 Distilled release. The piece opens with a pulsating rhythm section figure as pianist, bassist, and drummer enter one by one. The wonderful moments of tension have been maintained beneath Rachmaninoff's soaringly romantic melody, and the wordless vocal provides an ethereal quality. With the optional soli, this is an Advanced level arrangement. There is room for improvising regardless of whether or not the soli is performed and, with no soli, this is an Advanced Intermediate arrangement.  Included individual piano, bass, and drum parts play from individual parts with chord symbols, slashes, and rhythmic notation. Published by Ivo Antognini (A0.1211209). In this Trinity Service (2021) I used the text of the Magnificat as if it were the storyboard of a film. I tried to describe in the utmost detail the emotion the words conveyed to me and the images they suggested. In this composition I have used word-painting, attempting to colour as many words, phrases and situations as possible; hence the score is full of expression markings such as ‘majestic’, ‘with vigour’, ‘lively’, ‘intense’, ‘with affection’ and ‘with verve’. The result is a piece that changes texture rather quickly, and its noble opening theme (‘My soul doth magnify the Lord’) returns only once in abbreviated form (‘He hath filled the hungry with good things’). The following Nunc dimittis has a much more meditative and intimate character with a sparser texture. There are some references to the themes presented in the Magnificat. A motif from the Magnificat, ‘Glory be to the Father, and to the Son’, recurs in almost the same form towards the close of the Nunc dimittis, but in a quieter vein and in 4 rather than the 43 of the Magnificat. The Magnificat and the Nunc dimittis may be performed individually.

Published by Curtis Hanson (A0.719561). The pieces which comprise the Six Lenten Anthems are scored for SATB divisi chorus and organ and are both original and arrangements. They were conceived as a unit, i.e. some material is thematically related. The cycle is in arch form - pieces one (Out of the Depths) and six (Be Near Me, Precious Savior) are edited versions of German chorales, both of which have ties to Hassler and Protestant Germany and which have similar cadences. Pieces two (Lamb of God) and five (When Jesus Wept) are arrangements of works utilizing modal dissonance in juxtaposition, number two being another traditional German chorale, number five a familiar melody by Billings. Pieces three (Hosanna! and four (Jerusalem) are original works which require multiple divisi and also employ significant dissonance. Each of the pieces are available and may be performed separately.

The Betrayal is written for choir (soprano, alto, tenor, bass). It is a religious piece based on the passion of Christ. It has aspects of imitation, with a lot of independence in the parts. The vocal parts represent the voice of Jesus, the voices of those who crucified him, a narrator, and also briefly the voice of Peter, Jesus' disciple. The bass primarily sings the role of the people who called for his death, but as the piece continues others join in this role. I wrote some of the lyrics and also pulled some verses in from the Bible. I think this would be a great piece for Holy Week, perhaps on Good Friday or Maundy Thursday. the piece captures some of the intense emotions involved in the crucifixion and would make a great addition to Lenten music in the church. There’s a beauty found where minds meet that no one person can achieve alone.   So, in search of that beauty, before I even started to work on this piece, I met with the students of Waukesha North High School at the end of their 2023 school year. And we talked. We talked about how life was going. The good and bad. The ups and downs. Things lost. Things found… They shared some laughs and even some tears… The conversations we had were unexpectedly poignant and stuck with me throughout the writing process.   School is a time of great change in our lives and often we are so focused on “getting through†that we don’t really stop to appreciate it until later. This piece celebrates that part of the process. The way we build onto ourselves- acknowledging and accepting that our experiences we have during this time, both good and bad, are crucial to our identity and our ability to move forward in life. They are the cornerstones of who we are and who we become… Inspired by these experiences we shared, I wrote this text. It’s about building a house. The “house†being our self.
