You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth - Choral Arrangement for SATB and Piano by Michael Thomas Coull.You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth (also known as You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth (Hot Summer Night)) is the first solo single by the American singer Meat Loaf, released in 1977.  It is a track from his album Bat Out of Hell, written by Jim Steinman. According to his autobiography, Meat Loaf asked Jim Steinman to write a song that was not 15 or 20 minutes long, and, in Meat Loaf’s words, a ‘pop song’.  His autobiography also dates the writing of the song to 1975, the song reportedly being a key factor in Meat Loaf and Steinman deciding to do an album together.  The song was the first single released from the album, with an edit of For Crying Out Loud as the B-side.  The record peaked at No. 73 in the Record World singles chart, and didn't appear at all in Billboard Hot 100.  Billboard reviewed the single, finding the guitar introduction to be energetic, the beat to be ‘catchy’ and the vocal performance to be somewhat similar to Bruce Springsteen.  Billboard also commented on how occasional pauses in the instruments allow the ‘infectious’ vocals to be highlighted.   Following the success of the next two singles, Two Out of Three Ain't Bad and Paradise by the Dashboard Light, the song was re-released in October 1978 with Paradise as the B-side.  This issue peaked at No. 39 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, over a year after the first release of the song.This exciting and energetic choral arrangement is voiced for full SATB choir with piano accompaniment, and will lend a touch of contemporary pop/rock to your next concert.Also available for SSAA.

If we recite the Nembutsu while resigned to the fact that we are to remain ordinary beings full of delusion until death, we shall be received in welcome by Amida; then, as soon as we mount the lotus seat, our mind of delusion will be turned into that of Enlightenment. The Nembutsu that is uttered with the mind of delusion is like a lotus flower unstained by the muddy water. There should not be any doubt as to our attainment of birth.We should not be concerned about our delusion, but reflecting on the shallowness of our mind of faith, continually recite the Name in earnest.

A manuscript, ca. 1650, contains a version with the first line, “Sit you merry gentlemen†and the refrain, “O tidings of comfort and joy.†The earliest known printed edition of the carol is a London broadsheet dated 1760, in which the first line is the familiar “God rest ye merry, gentlemen.†By the 19th century, the carol was well-known, with Charles Dickens referencing it in his 1843 novella, A Christmas Carol.The phrase “God rest you merry†in the first line is an archaic idiom meaning “God grant you peace and happiness.†William Shakespeare used the phrase “rest you merry†in his plays, “As You Like It†and “Romeo and Juliet,†both from the 1590s; but Dickens recorded the phrase as “God bless you, merry gentlemen†in A Christmas Carol.The tune adapted for use in this arrangement was at the time of its notation a wordless, nameless melody noted in 1905 by folk song collector E. Quintrell from the singing of a Mr. Boaden in Cornwall, England. The tune was sent to Lucy Broadwood, editor of the Journal of the Folk-Song Society, who decided that it fit the ballad, “The Maid in Bedlam,†and published the tune and text together. This composition is built in form as a traditional Mass, but the text used comprises of a selection of only a few words of those usually applied in the traditional Mass movements. The text used, described in detail, is as follows:1. As Kyrie movement: Only the word ELEISON (Have Mercy On Us) 2. As Gloria movement: Only the word GLORIA (Hail)3. As Credo movement: Alternative text: Paul’s 1:13 Corinthian (on love)4. As Sanctus / Benedictus: Only the sentence: PLENI SUNT COELI ET TERRA GLORIA TUA (The Sky and the Earth are full of Thy Glory)5. As Agnus Dei: Only the sentence DONA NOBIS PACEM (Give Us Peace)The text selection is a result of the intention to concentrate on the essence and the universal character of each movement, without getting into conflict with the dogmatic parts of the original text. This is also the reason for the use of the word alternative in the title. The writing is fairly melodious and tonal, with some contemporary effects.The individual movements may also be used seperately.Duration of the whole mass lasts for about 20 minutes.The individual movements vary from 2 and a half to 7 minutes. It was premiered at a major charity event at St Paul's Covent Garden in London and performed two weeks later at Southwark Cathedral. The words - In the beginning was the Word: the Word was with God and the Word was God - have rarely been set to music, but they are perfect for a Christmas programme or liturgical service. Big choral textures are created from small beginnings, with climactic chords on 'God'. A vivid and at times raucous celebration of Saturnalia, in Latin, for an ensemble of voices and instruments (including various percussion, woodwind and brass instruments). The sound sample is a sung performance by the composer with an electronic preview of the instruments. Further explanations: Song for Saturnalia - a raucous and fun romp - in whole tones (since there is scant evidence of the types of scales used in those days - whole tones just seem to work in this context). The Latin words make references to relatively modern times but the spirit of Saturnalia is timeless, after all. The pileum (also written pilleum) is the little cap that slave wore during Saturnalia to show they were free men and women on that day - they would point to their cap and say libertus sum (I am a free person) and omnes aequales sumus (we are all equal). The words (and translation - both by me) are as follows: Saturnalia Song Io Saturnalia! Hodie igitur dominus noster non es. [Hooray, it’s Saturnalia, so today you’re not our boss] Hodie omnes aequales sumus. Io! Originally recorded by the American rock band Extreme in 1991, this SATB w/ divisi a cappella arrangement adds a flavor of vocal jazz with a hint of Imogen Heap inspiration. While solos throughout are optional, this chart was written to feature the entire ensemble over highlighting a single voice. Also, a slower tempo, tight harmonies and softer dynamics will contrast nicely against the upbeat tunes in your set. Finally, ensembles may elect to snap or use some other form of body percussion to keep time while your vocal percussionist can take a much needed breather!
