DSCHbags vs. BACHstards was inspired by a tweet I saw once (can't remember whose) offering the world a new word 'DSCHbag' to describe classical composers who are self-obsessed enough to need to include their musical signnature in every piece they write. My quick witted friend Peter J Casey replied with 'What a BACHstard' and this a cappella work was born.Don't think I don't like Shostakovich and bach. I really them and their musical signature thing is genuinely really clever, but I can't help but liked this habit to rapper who insist on yelling their own names in their songs. That is just plainn annoying.Performance note: The singers should be arranged in two SATB quartets that are mirror images of one another, so that singers may aim each motif directly to the face of their counterpart, like a weapon of sorts, laser beams for eyes.(DSCHbags vs. BACHstards was commissioned by The Song Company).

The InspirationIn 2023 I decided to review a piece I had composed in 1990 to honor a friend I was singing with in a choral group at that time; Charles Munion. He never heard the piece as I felt the classical contemporary style would be a bit much for his ears! Beyond that I don't have allot of recollection as to the inspiration or what my thoughts were at the time of the composition. In regards to the revision, I added additional music to the third movement in order to balance out the movements and reworked some of the choral voicing.The MusicWritten in a contemporary classical style it follows the classic structure of 3 movements: First movement – brisk, loud forceful in nature Second movement – slow and lyrical Third movement – light and quick but with a forceful ending While in a contemporary style, at heart it maintains tonal centers throughout. While there is a few brief moments where I can here a little Bartok, as a whole I would say this piece is unique in regards to its style.

English.In the summer of 2011, while I was visiting my friends Don and Sally Roberts in Santa Fe, Sally asked me if I would be interested in writing a new choral work for Don in celebration of his upcoming 75th birthday. The idea appealed to me very much, so I readily agreed to write the piece. Since Don has enjoyed a lifelong interest in the American Southwest Pueblo people and their customs, Sally provided me with several Tewa texts, in English translation, to consider for musical setting. I was particularly drawn to the imagery of Song of the Sky Loom, so that poem became the basis for the new work. The music begins with two baritone soloists singing an introductory 'call-and-response' to which the entire chorus eventually responds. The opening line of text is first presented in fragmented form, as if voices from all areas of nature gradually rise up and then merge into a unified chordal texture. As the text turns to the imagery of weaving, the musical texture, accordingly, becomes contrapuntal: individual melodic lines, sung by solo voices or small groups (the 'weft'), intertwine with each other and also with the main chorus, which provides the overall harmonic structure (the 'warp'). The following chorale section, infused with occasional chromatic inflections, represents the massive 'rainbow' in the text and brings the work to a unified conclusion. Song of the Sky Loom was first performed by the Santa Fe Desert Chorale, under the direction of Joshua Habermann, on July 19, 2016 with three subsequent performances during the following two weeks. -Frank Ferko Duration: 6:07.

Of the four, only Christopher Marlowe’s seductive “The Passionate Shepherd to His Love†and Shakespeare’s wise and insightful Sonnet 116 address requited love. On the other hand, John Donne’s “The Message†is a “hate-songâ€, an angry poem about love gone wrong, bursting with bitter recriminations. And Elizabeth I’s “When I Was Fair and Young,†is wistful and full of regret: the Queen realizes that her own youthful pride has obstructed her opportunities for happiness. Together, these poems offer four dramatically contrasting views about love.

On the Lake written for advanced SSAA divisi and harp. Fannie Isabelle Sherrick was an American poet who wrote songs and poems throughout the 1860's that captured hearts and minds. I Can Not Say the Sad Good-Bye was one of her notable songs published in 1873. She was both influenced and encouraged by Ella Wheeler Wilcox who she attributed her success to. Her most popular poetry volume entitled Love or Fame and Other Poems was published in 1880 by W.S Bryan of St Louis and she continued writing for many years. ON THE LAKE There's a beautiful lake where the sun lies low, And the skies are warm with their summer glow; And a beautiful picture there I see Where the winds are warm and the waves are free, And the waves lie still in the sun As the flowers at night, when the day is done. You may sing of your silvery seas by night When the moon looks down with a dreamy light; And the stars shine out in the skies above Like the warm sweet gaze of the eyes of love; But the glow on the lake to-day Is a glory that never will fade away. The beautiful lake is a sea of gold And the beauty it wears will never grow old; The trees bend down in the sun's warm glow Till their branches meet in the waves below, And the clouds in the far-off skies Are mirrored anew where the sunlight lies. PROGRAM NOTES As of the present writing, this choral tone poem had been gestating for over thirty years, and the concept and harmonies for it for over forty years. In the 1980s I began to work with the latter two in my brief orchestral piece Little Sea Nocturne. When reading the poetry of Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849), I am most struck by how musical they are. When recited aloud they exhibit their own rhythmic sense. I was eager to incorporate those rhythms into my music. I had long been familiar with his poem The City In the Sea and began to sketch choral passages for the present choral tone poem in the 1990s. It took me until 2022 to complete it because I required many more years of experience at my craft to do so to lead into out of the choruses. In 2012 I completed a seven-minute unaccompanied version of the choruses with music unique to and unifying it simply called The City In the Sea. In composing The City In the Sea - Choral Tone Poem, my goal was to write a piece that, while steeped in tradition, sounds unlike anything in the literature that had come before it. The result is an original hybrid work that successfully and memorably combines salient aspects of the tonal, atonal, and modal musical languages into an organic whole. George Perle coined the term “twelve-tone tonality†to describe the music of Alban Berg and composers influenced by him such as Luigi Dallapiccola. The last title of which I am aware that accomplishes anything remotely related to what I am trying to accomplish musically in this choral tone poem is the piece Paradiso Choruses by Donald Martino (1974). However, I take twelve-tone tonality in entirely other directions in my work. That the duration of The City In the Sea - Choral Tone Poem came out to be thirteen minutes seems appropriate for piece about a sunken city. Rather than write program notes that narrate how the music unfolds I will simply shout out the most memorable aspects of what careful listeners will discern: a recurring heartbeat motif; shifting polychordal harmonies; echo technique; rhythmic diminutions and augmentations; an a cappella chorus featuring those harmonies with a surprisingly memorable recuring theme on top; sensuous flute duets; string section underpinnings by way of either sustained passages or wave-like gestures; tritone-related melodies, harmonies, and tone centers; several strategically placed grand pauses; tritone-related modal-sounding passages; melodic and chord clusters, especially the two climactic ones. When I heard that there was an opportunity to write for a student formed choir at Peabody, I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to set one of my previously written poems to music. I looked back at poems which I had written, and came across The Landowner. It continues to intrigue me to this day since I am still uncertain as to what it is about. This enigmatic, earthy, and hauntingly repetitive poem poses more questions than it does provide answers.
