PROGRAM NOTES As of the present writing, this choral tone poem had been gestating for over thirty years, and the concept and harmonies for it for over forty years. In the 1980s I began to work with the latter two in my brief orchestral piece Little Sea Nocturne. When reading the poetry of Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849), I am most struck by how musical they are. When recited aloud they exhibit their own rhythmic sense. I was eager to incorporate those rhythms into my music. I had long been familiar with his poem The City In the Sea and began to sketch choral passages for the present choral tone poem in the 1990s. It took me until 2022 to complete it because I required many more years of experience at my craft to do so to lead into out of the choruses. In 2012 I completed a seven-minute unaccompanied version of the choruses with music unique to and unifying it simply called The City In the Sea. In composing The City In the Sea - Choral Tone Poem, my goal was to write a piece that, while steeped in tradition, sounds unlike anything in the literature that had come before it. The result is an original hybrid work that successfully and memorably combines salient aspects of the tonal, atonal, and modal musical languages into an organic whole. George Perle coined the term “twelve-tone tonality†to describe the music of Alban Berg and composers influenced by him such as Luigi Dallapiccola. The last title of which I am aware that accomplishes anything remotely related to what I am trying to accomplish musically in this choral tone poem is the piece Paradiso Choruses by Donald Martino (1974). However, I take twelve-tone tonality in entirely other directions in my work. That the duration of The City In the Sea - Choral Tone Poem came out to be thirteen minutes seems appropriate for piece about a sunken city. Rather than write program notes that narrate how the music unfolds I will simply shout out the most memorable aspects of what careful listeners will discern: a recurring heartbeat motif; shifting polychordal harmonies; echo technique; rhythmic diminutions and augmentations; an a cappella chorus featuring those harmonies with a surprisingly memorable recuring theme on top; sensuous flute duets; string section underpinnings by way of either sustained passages or wave-like gestures; tritone-related melodies, harmonies, and tone centers; several strategically placed grand pauses; tritone-related modal-sounding passages; melodic and chord clusters, especially the two climactic ones. Solo passages round off the 'Karfreitags-Sonett' [Good Friday Sonnet] which was commissioned by the Bavarian Radio and premiered in Nuremberg in 1986.

Creating choral versions of some of them is inspired by the solo recordings made by Jan DeGaetani accompanied by Gilbert Kalish, and by the choral recordings made by The Gregg Smith Singers.That Ives composed over one hundred songs is no small feat. Though they vary in quality as does his entire oeuvre, some of them remain almost mystical to me in their quality and effect. Like a Sick Eagle and The Indians (renamed here to The Native Americans to match the current times) are two such songs.When arranging Like a Sick Eagle, I visited the website for the Charles Ives Society where I discovered that he grouped this song with The Indians under the master title Set No. 10 of Three Pieces with the song Luck and Work placed between them for contrast. I knew I could arrange the first and third songs for mixed chorus, but I also knew right away that the second song would be all but impossible to arrange for I was already familiar with it. So I included it in its original version and labeled it for Solo Voice or Unison Chorus and Piano.In creating these arrangements I hope to rekindle interest in Ives’ music and its possibilities. I also hope that you find these songs as moving as I do.—Stanley M. O Sing To The Lord A New Song is a setting of the complete text of Psalm 98. It was the students' favorite piece on its premiere concert in March of 2013. The piece has become a staple of their repertoire, has been the capstone piece of their 2013 through 2017 tours and has been sung most every year by the Genevans since its premiere. The voicing is SSAATTBB, for acapella choir and includes the rehearsal piano part.    It is a fantastic anthem for celebrations or a rousing way to start or end your concert.

Commissioned by Allen Buskirk for the Mount Calvary Choir, Baltimore, MD. “Diffusa est gratia / Senex puerum portabatâ€Â combines two liturgical texts associated with the feast of Candlemas. The first, “Diffusa est gratia is from Psalm 44:3 and ascribes to Mary a fullness of grace that is a common theme in Marian feasts. The second, Senex puerum portabat,†is more particularly relevant to the story of the infant Jesus and the ancient holy man Simeon found in today’s gospel. Singing two texts within one piece was common in Medieval music, where the interest lay on the juxtaposition of the texts and the interplay between them. Erik’s setting is influenced by both late Medieval and Renaissance choral styles. Each singer has long flowing lines that combine in duets, trios, and full quartet, yielding a variety of textures. Dissonant intervals are treated freely as was common in the late Medieval period before the tight control of the high Renaissance style. This expanded palette allows for more modern harmony that shifts in and out and resolves into consonant intervals at the end of phrases. Rhythmic syncopation and complexity were highly valued in the late Medieval style as they are again today; here they provide forward momentum. Together, these elements define a sensibility that is both ancient and new, influenced by practices of composers from the 14th and 15th centuries as well as more modern composers such as Moondog and Meredith Monk.

Published by stanleymhoffman.com (A0.1487909). Composer’s Notes Anim Zemiros was composed in 1985 while I was a doctoral student of Martin Boykan at Brandeis University. The initial fugal theme was inspired by the melody from the third movement of Beethoven's Quartet in A Minor, Op. 132, also known as Heiliger Dankgesang. My theme resembles Beethoven's melody in two ways: it aurally approximates the rhythms of his theme and it also takes the contour of Beethoven's melody and inverts it, also in an approximated way. This is where the similarities to Beethoven's theme end, forAnim Zemiros is most certainly not composed in the Lydian mode! Rather, it is composed in a chromatically saturated musical language. Although Anim Zemiros may be used for the Jewish Musaf Sabbath Service, it was conceived as a concert piece. In the synagogue, this hymn is sung responsively by the cantor and congregation. The responsive nature of this hymn is what inspired the use of contrapuntal passages alternating with homophonic ones. Anim Zemiros begins with a statement of the initial fugal theme in the basses followed by a response at the interval of a fifth in the altos during which the basses present the counter theme. After a brief episode, the same thing happens in the tenor and soprano voices while the basses and altos present new contrapuntal melodies. A brief, contrasting, calm homophonic chorale passage ensues (a textural foreshadowing of both the loud climax and the hushed closing of the piece). This is followed by an extended development section (like ones from sonata-allegro movements) in which ideas from both the contrapuntal and homophonic sections are fragmented and stratified. Shifting time signatures provide added momentum to this music that leads to the homophonic climax that follows. Next comes an “anti-fugue” in which the initial fugal theme is presented backwards, as is the fugal form itself, moving from four voices, to three and finally to two. However, rather than moving to one voice as at the opening of the piece (which would have been a very predictable thing to do), the piece ends with a reminiscence of the calm homophonic chorale. Ashkenazic pronunciation was chosen over Sephardic for two reasons. I wished to have the s sound on the Hebrew letter sov rather than the t sound. In addition, Ashkenazic pronunciation is considered to be somewhat archaic since Sephardic is used in modern Hebrew. I felt this gave me artistic license to compose vocal lines containing correct or incorrect syllabic stress for purely musical effect. It has now had 1.4 million views . I liked the music and wanted to obtain it for my church choir. I couldn't find anywhere an SATB version in English, so I finally created one myself. The piece should be sung a cappella. A piano part for rehearsal is included.

The doctors told us that she would not live. My father began to pray and certain scriptures came to his mind. Soon, he and my mother began to remind each other of these scriptures. Dia ended up making it. I tell her God must have something planned for her if she survived such a rough start.Performance: The piece opens with a joyful piano solo followed by the higher voices' entrance. These are the mothers exclaiming their joy for the new coming baby. The lower voices then make their statement in their own melody. They are the fathers expressing the excitement of the chlid's birth. The piano takes a turn into the minor key. A soloist represents the doctor delivering the bad news as the rest of the choir makes waiting room sounds. Have people texting or talking on the phone, flipping through magazines, or rustling papers. The alto soloist then repeats the doctor's message. The higher voices began to weep and cry as the father begins to pray. The 3 basses (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit) answer in scripture. The father begins to recite the scripture with God and soon the rest of the choir joins. The key modulates to the Major 3rd as the piano solo returns to represent the child living.

Re-imagined for double reed choir, it is a challenging and fun setting for this fugue. The different instruments take turns entering with the subject of the fugue, and interplay back and forth with the other instruments. The timbres of the different instruments adds a whole new textural dimension to this already fascinating work by J.S. Bach. I considered the need to breathe for each of these wind instruments, which obviously wasn't an issue for the original version intended for organ. This piece would be appropriate for advanced high school students, college students, or professionals. It would do well in a chamber music concert, in a church, or between acts of a larger ensemble concert, perhaps in another location of the auditorium while a (quiet!) set change is taking place. It would also work well as prelude or lobby music. The duration is just over three minutes (or longer if you prefer to take it slower). Each measure is numbered individually for convenience during rehearsals. I hope you will enjoy performing this piece as much as I have enjoyed arranging it! This chart reimagines The Band's original song as an a cappella swing tune straight out of the 1940's. The bottom voice thumps along on neutral syllables of your choosing just as an upright bassist would in the big band. If you don't have any singers who can take on this part, an actual bass instrument could be substituted. The guitar accompaniment of the original song is now replaced by complex jazz harmonies and rhythms sung by your upper voices to compliment your soloists. The last 1/3rd of the song has a breakdown that layers and overlaps your voices one by one until they come together for a final build into the last chorus. This section also offers an opportunity for a small quartet to sing an optional harmony part. While this piece is challenging, it offers a unique spin on an old classic that will surely hold your audience's attention if performed well. .

Amen. - St. Francis of Assisi's Prayer before the Crucifix NOTES from the composer: One year ago, I had the privilege of participating in the Leadership Pilgrimage to Assisi and Rome (2011) sponsored by the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration, Franciscan Healthcare, and Viterbo University. I carried with me, not only the responsibility of bringing back a hint of Francis’ lived experience to my students, but the desire to compose something wholly Franciscan. The San Damiano Cross is one of the most distinctive Franciscan images we have on campus. The gentle Jesus that hangs on this 12th-century icon will forever be linked to Francis’ dramatic step from citizen to sainthood-welcoming his earnest prayer to enlighten the darkness of his heart. The Basilica of Santa Chiara in Assisi holds both the San Damiano Cross and the remains of his confidante, St. Clare. It seemed a good place to start getting serious. Copying the prayer in at least six different languages, I tucked it away in my travel books, not digging it out again until the following summer (2012). The opening phrases in the piece came easily enough (Altissimo, glorioso Dio), but I stumbled through a handful of ideas before coming up with the mantra (illumine le tenebre…). It made sense that Francis would joyfully address God singing forte (Altissimo and Signore), while quietly chanting his humble prayers for faith, hope, charity, and knowledge. The friendship between Francis and Clare can’t be missed, not only in the intermingling of SATB voices, but in the setting of che faccia lo tuo santo e verace comadamento (that I may carry out your holy and true command). The phrase is sung only once by the women before the final return of the illumine chant (which is repeated throughout by the men). Maybe I chanced on weaving some of Clare’s courage with Francis’ persistence into Illumina le tenebre, all while trying to compose something wholly Franciscan?  ---Mary Ellen Haupert, October 2012.
