Not only is it central to Judaism, not only is it integral to the Christian Bible, it is an immortal story that has been, and continues to be, an inspiration to oppressed peoples everywhere on this planet. It is relevant not just as ancient scripture but as living text, to be rediscovered by each new generation of an ever-widening Family of Man. The theme of struggle against oppression and slavery was just as relevant to the early Christians persecuted in Ancient Rome as it was relevant to the American Civil Rights movement of the 1960's, just as relevant to the Soviet Jews wishing to emigrate as it is to the South African Blacks resisting Apartheid. From the Dark Ages and the Spanish Inquisition, to Ghandi's emancipation of India, to the Holocaust, to, full-circle, the ongoing struggles in Palestine today, the story of Exodus is a guiding light in a dim and often grim world. According to the composer: The Story of a Leader is a collection of ‘re-chorales’ I created one summer when I was totally immersed in a post-educational obsession with the 371 Chorales by Johann Sebastian Bach. We used to study these to learn the rules of harmony and voice-leading (no parallel fifths, avoid crossed voices, etc.) at the Cleveland Institute of Music where I began my compositional career. That summer, now a professor of music in my own right, I discovered many broken and bent rules by the master himself and, along with the glory of being able to work through these Chorales myself at the piano, I felt an incredible feeling of liberation and possibilities unmediated by instructors of music theory. I began by stripping away all that Bach wrote, leaving only the hymn tunes which were not his to begin with. These tunes existed long before Bach used them for his tonal experiments, some attributed to Martin Luther, or someone else, others simply listed as ‘anonymous’. The same is true for the texts, which were then translated into English mostly in the 19th century (the provenance of each can be found herein on the first page of each of my reharmonizations). In some cases I modified the text to fit the context. I selected 12 of these ‘re-chorales,’ linking them together based on their texts in a kind of logic that worked for me, and created a narrative that told The Story of a Leader (Moses). This story is highlighted in the music with such techniques as cross-modal harmonies, points of imitation, a beer drinking song in one instance, and in another, to symbolize the parting of the seas for Moses’ people, an inversion of the soprano line in the bass..

PROGRAM NOTES As of the present writing, this choral tone poem had been gestating for over thirty years, and the concept and harmonies for it for over forty years. In the 1980s I began to work with the latter two in my brief orchestral piece Little Sea Nocturne. When reading the poetry of Edgar Allan Poe (1809–1849), I am most struck by how musical they are. When recited aloud they exhibit their own rhythmic sense. I was eager to incorporate those rhythms into my music. I had long been familiar with his poem The City In the Sea and began to sketch choral passages for the present choral tone poem in the 1990s. It took me until 2022 to complete it because I required many more years of experience at my craft to do so to lead into out of the choruses. In 2012 I completed a seven-minute unaccompanied version of the choruses with music unique to and unifying it simply called The City In the Sea. In composing The City In the Sea - Choral Tone Poem, my goal was to write a piece that, while steeped in tradition, sounds unlike anything in the literature that had come before it. The result is an original hybrid work that successfully and memorably combines salient aspects of the tonal, atonal, and modal musical languages into an organic whole. George Perle coined the term “twelve-tone tonality†to describe the music of Alban Berg and composers influenced by him such as Luigi Dallapiccola. The last title of which I am aware that accomplishes anything remotely related to what I am trying to accomplish musically in this choral tone poem is the piece Paradiso Choruses by Donald Martino (1974). However, I take twelve-tone tonality in entirely other directions in my work. That the duration of The City In the Sea - Choral Tone Poem came out to be thirteen minutes seems appropriate for piece about a sunken city. Rather than write program notes that narrate how the music unfolds I will simply shout out the most memorable aspects of what careful listeners will discern: a recurring heartbeat motif; shifting polychordal harmonies; echo technique; rhythmic diminutions and augmentations; an a cappella chorus featuring those harmonies with a surprisingly memorable recuring theme on top; sensuous flute duets; string section underpinnings by way of either sustained passages or wave-like gestures; tritone-related melodies, harmonies, and tone centers; several strategically placed grand pauses; tritone-related modal-sounding passages; melodic and chord clusters, especially the two climactic ones. O Sing To The Lord A New Song is a setting of the complete text of Psalm 98. It was the students' favorite piece on its premiere concert in March of 2013. The piece has become a staple of their repertoire, has been the capstone piece of their 2013 through 2017 tours and has been sung most every year by the Genevans since its premiere. The voicing is SSAATTBB, for acapella choir and includes the rehearsal piano part.    It is a fantastic anthem for celebrations or a rousing way to start or end your concert.

Based on its Neo-classical style, this setting of the Roman Catholic mass text could possibly work as a festive mass (missa solemnis) with trumpets and timpani, and its duration would fit such a solemn service. However, its intense and sometimes dramatic treatment and universal addressability due to its well-known and rather concentrated text, yet also due to eliminating the „Filioque†(which would still fit the rhythm of the repeated „qui ex Patreâ€, should any Catholics ever wish to perform this as a mass) make it rather a „liturgical oratorio for all nationsâ€, more appropriate in the concert hall. The work has had a long gestation: imagined in 1984 after the composer’s first contact with Beethoven’s masterpiece, then sketched first in 1987-1989, and many of its themes date back from those years. Its working out is quite polyphonic, discretely modal and cyclical, and also full of centuries-old musical symbols traditionally associated with the setting of the mass text: e.g. unisons for the more dogmatical parts, Baroque dotted rhythms at the Nativity (the first coming of the  King of Kings), „rex caelestis†and also at his Passion (whose setting is discretely inspired by folkloric Romanian laments), the „anabasis†gesture at „Gloria in excelsis Deoâ€, „et ascendit in caelisâ€, „in remissionem peccatorum†and the resurrection, a flute trill standing for the Holy Spirit who has come ’like a dove’ at „et incarnatus estâ€, a cross-shaped texture at „crucifixusâ€, and some word-painting (hushed sonorities at „et invisibiliumâ€, anticipations between orchestra and chorus at „et exspecto†etc.). Moreover, certain symbolic roles are assigned to the instrumental groups when alone (the organ represents God the Father and transcendence, the winds and/or solo voices represent God the Son and humanity, and the strings represent the Holy Spirit). „Kyrie†is restrained and soft, besides the powerful chords opening the respective sections of its tripartite, simple structure, and it leans towards Palestrina’s serene modality and counterpoint. „Gloria†begins with a colorful orchestral introduction depicting discretely the shepherds who kept watch over their flocks right before the Nativity, and then gradually the bright revelation. „Credo†has an orchestral introduction as well, but powerful, recurring and based on the beginning of the plainchant hymn „Pange linguaâ€, made famous by Mozart’s last symphony and by other Classical composers. Both „Gloria†and „Credo†end with extended, powerful and elaborate fugues („in gloria Dei Patris†and „et vitam venturi saeculiâ€, respectively) with dramatic modulations and sometimes with enthusiastic syncopations at odds with the words’ accents, a la Stravinsky. The same sections plus „Agnus Dei†end with soft quartal harmonies suggesting transcendent appeasement (similar harmonies appear powerfully at the beginning of „Sanctusâ€). „Judicare†quotes the beginning of the well-known „Dies irae†plainchant tune, and the Consecration between the „Sanctus†and „Benedictus†sections is represented by a contemplative prelude for solo organ, quoting Lutheran chorales, too. Another long orchestral introduction, suggesting the Last Judgment and based on traditional Byzantine hymns, opens „Agnus Deiâ€, which includes another quotation (the famous ’Dresden Amen’ at „qui tollis peccata mundi†and „dona nobis pacemâ€). In the final section, with its refined simplicity, the choral voices enter in descending order, and the „Kyrie eleison†theme is briefly remembered, then it ends softly and peacefully. Total duration: 50 min. In composing my own setting, it pleased me to think of the choir as representing the worldly creatures (people and animals) present at Jesus’s birth; and the saxophone as an otherworldly, mystical presence hovering above. The initial fugal theme was inspired by the melody from the third movement of Beethoven's Quartet in A Minor, Op. 132, also known as Heiliger Dankgesang. My theme resembles Beethoven's melody in two ways: it aurally approximates the rhythms of his theme and it also takes the contour of Beethoven's melody and inverts it, also in an approximated way. This is where the similarities to Beethoven's theme end, forAnim Zemiros is most certainly not composed in the Lydian mode! Rather, it is composed in a chromatically saturated musical language. Although Anim Zemiros may be used for the Jewish Musaf Sabbath Service, it was conceived as a concert piece. In the synagogue, this hymn is sung responsively by the cantor and congregation. The responsive nature of this hymn is what inspired the use of contrapuntal passages alternating with homophonic ones. Anim Zemiros begins with a statement of the initial fugal theme in the basses followed by a response at the interval of a fifth in the altos during which the basses present the counter theme. After a brief episode, the same thing happens in the tenor and soprano voices while the basses and altos present new contrapuntal melodies. A brief, contrasting, calm homophonic chorale passage ensues (a textural foreshadowing of both the loud climax and the hushed closing of the piece). This is followed by an extended development section (like ones from sonata-allegro movements) in which ideas from both the contrapuntal and homophonic sections are fragmented and stratified. Shifting time signatures provide added momentum to this music that leads to the homophonic climax that follows. Next comes an “anti-fugue” in which the initial fugal theme is presented backwards, as is the fugal form itself, moving from four voices, to three and finally to two. However, rather than moving to one voice as at the opening of the piece (which would have been a very predictable thing to do), the piece ends with a reminiscence of the calm homophonic chorale. Ashkenazic pronunciation was chosen over Sephardic for two reasons. I wished to have the s sound on the Hebrew letter sov rather than the t sound. In addition, Ashkenazic pronunciation is considered to be somewhat archaic since Sephardic is used in modern Hebrew. I felt this gave me artistic license to compose vocal lines containing correct or incorrect syllabic stress for purely musical effect. This work was originally composed for choir by Bernadette Debattista and was first performed at the Dawn Service, commemorating the centenary of the Gallipoli landings, in ANZAC Cove on 25 April 2015 by a combined choir from St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace and All Hallows’ School. This extended work sees the original theme recomposed for big band and choir. It may be performed in its entirety or the third movement may be omitted (or presented as spoken word only) if a choir is not available. The sax section requires the following doubles: Clarinet for Alto Saxes 1 and 2, and Tenor Sax 2; Flute for Tenor Sax 1; Bassoon for Bari Sax (although a Bari Sax part with no doubles has been included). There is also an optional part for Eb Sarrusophone! Trumpets require Flugelhorns and Harmon mutes.The recording features excerpts from each of the four movements and a brief description of each follows.1. Distant Shores With its jaunty, march-like feel, one can only imagine what it must have been like as these young men and women travelled to far off places, fired with the thrill of adventure, blind to the trauma and terrors of war. 2.Your Sons Are Our Sons The title for this movement is a paraphrase of a line in a speech given by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in which he speaks of the special bond between Australia and Turkey. This movement features solo space for Piano and Trumpet.3.Reflection This movement features a small vocal group, including some of the singers who were present at the 2015 performance in ANZAC Cove, and a reading of the poem that became the lyrics of the song. 4.Hymn The final movement presents the theme in close to its original form, although extensively re-harmonised. A solo trumpet for most of the movement.I hope you enjoy performing this work.

The publication was popular, and Petrucci went on to publish another four books of motets under the same name.Three of my own Motetti de la Corona are settings of texts excerpted from Petrucci’s publication: “Ecce Maria,” “Christum ducem” and “Sancta Trinitas.” The “Ave Maria” draws on the Book of St. Luke for its text. And “De profundis” (Psalm 129 or 130, depending on the numbering system used) has been set to music by many composers, from Josquin to Pärt. Its cry for help seemed an appropriate response to a time of global pandemic.

The words are from the responsory for 1st Vespers at Pentecost and tell of the Apostles beginning to speak in many tongues, proclaiming the great works of God. In this reworking, vocal parts gradually move away from the Tallis original, taking musical ideas from the soprano saxophone part and “speaking in tonguesâ€. The opening interplay between sax and solo tenor uses notes from the Intonation, creating the “-bantur, -bantur†figure which gives this arrangement its title. As the piece proceeds individual vocal lines gradually speak in the tongues suggested by the sax. By the end, the joyful combination of many musical ideas is crowned by the ecstatic saxophone part. The “tongues†ideas are shown in the score by added phrasing and by using lyrics in italics. These fragments should be sung a little more prominently, allowing them to pop out above the overall texture. An additional tenor line has been added, making the piece’s scoring SSAATTBB plus saxophone.
