Miserere Mei, Deus is a setting of Psalm 51 for a cappella choir, but it is no motet. It is an expressionistic piece in the horror genre, at times creepy and unsettling, at times dark and violent; it is extremely dramatic.The piece was commissioned for a concert commemorating the late-Renaissance composer Carlo Gesualdo. In it, Gesualdo implores God to have mercy on him for his murdering his wife and her lover in flagrante. He recalls the brutal slaughter, recreated in operatic Sprechstimme by half of the choir, while the other half wails and moans, but as he begs for forgiveness, his own words to his wife come back to haunt him: Pieta?! Non avra la mia pieta! (Mercy?! You will have no mercy from me!). He whips himself furiously and sinks to the floor exhausted, murmuring the groans for forgiveness that opened the work. It is left unresolved whether he has received forgiveness. .

There is also some scat singing and some optional cameo solos when performing with a smaller choir. For massed choir performances, the soprano solo may require amplification.While an a capella version of a piece for piano and orchestra sounds like a preposterous proposal, live performance of this piece defies categorisation but packs an entirely positive punch. This piece is a delight to perform and a dramatic and exciting audience experience for any part of your choir's concert programme - but once you've heard it, you'll probably want to save it for the end of the concert! Listeners are left with the impression that they have heard the whole of the original work, somehow condensed into approx 8 minutes of choral magic!

September 11, 2001 has had a profound affect on many people, not the least of which is the composer of this work. Written the month following the tragic events of 9/11, it is a reflection of the chaotic times in which we live. Dona Nobis Pacem (Grant Us Peace) is a prayer for peace to the loving God who is the God (or Allah, or Yahweh) of all people, that out of our current discord peace and harmony may come to all humanity. The work is in three sections (ABA) with a coda. The only text in the first three sections is a wailing Oh intoned by the choir. Throughout these sections the melody wanders in search of a harmonious resting point. In the B section the choir and strings part ways and resonate increased dissonance. The second A section exactly duplicates the first. The work concludes in the coda with the phrase Dona nobis pacem and an ever-increasing sense of harmonious repose. The listener may hear occasional reflections of Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings or Pavane for a Dead Princess by Maurice Ravel. Dona Nobis Pacem was premiered in May 2003 by the combined choirs of the John Duss Music Conservatory, Duluth MN, and Pilgrim Lutheran Church, Superior WI, under the direction of the composer. It is purely coincidental that there are 191 measures in the work......the numbers in the date of 9/11.

There are 150 psalms in the Bible, each one originally meant to be sung; and so they were for most of the last 3,000 years, beginning at the Jerusalem Temple. They were adopted as the primary song text of the early church as evidenced by Col. 3:16 and maintained in the Western church throughout medieval times. Psalms were the featured texts of most of the Reformers and were the sole mode of sacred singing among the first American settlers. Of late, hymns and choruses and popular songs with human texts have almost entirely replaced the singing of God’s word in many churches. This scarcity of Psalms in the Church’s song is a great loss which frequently compels me to do what I can to promote their increase.

Published by stanleymhoffman.com (A0.1350508). I have long had a fondness for the songs of Charles Ives whose music is in the Public Domain for the world as of 2024. Creating choral versions of some of them is inspired by the solo recordings made by Jan DeGaetani accompanied by Gilbert Kalish, and by the choral recordings made by The Gregg Smith Singers.That Ives composed over one hundred songs is no small feat. Though they vary in quality as does his entire oeuvre, some of them remain almost mystical to me in their quality and effect. Like a Sick Eagle and The Indians (renamed here to The Native Americans to match the current times) are two such songs.When arranging Like a Sick Eagle, I visited the website for the Charles Ives Society where I discovered that he grouped this song with The Indians under the master title Set No. 10 of Three Pieces with the song Luck and Work placed between them for contrast. I knew I could arrange the first and third songs for mixed chorus, but I also knew right away that the second song would be all but impossible to arrange for I was already familiar with it. So I included it in its original version and labeled it for Solo Voice or Unison Chorus and Piano.In creating these arrangements I hope to rekindle interest in Ives’ music and its possibilities. Jancaitis, director.The work is a cantata consisting of an instrumental sinfonia followed by choral settings of three poems by neo-Latin poetJakob Balde, S.J. (1604–68), hailed as the Horace of Germany and considered one of the greatest Latin poets of any era.In the case of the three poems selected, Balde’s vivid imagery and mastery of Latin poetics are put in service of religiousexpression. The poems are filled with countless allusions to the classical poetic tradition; notably, he creates a strongcorrelation between the Virgin Mary of his Christian tradition (Balde was a Jesuit priest) and the goddesses invoked inclassical Latin poetry. Thus, Balde uses the older forms to express something that was, for him, contemporary andrelevant. (An analogue to this use of language is the idea of creating new music to be played on period instruments.)The opening sinfonia begins with an ascending pattern of triads, which returns throughout the work. The forwardmomentum is interrupted several times before the movement settles tonally. The first choral movement employs abouncy momentum to set the celebratory poem on the Virgin’s assumption. The second movement is a prayerful song onthe acceptance of death; it is spare and meditative, unfolding as a series of sectional canons over several drones. The finalmovement returns to the celebratory spirit of the opening; this time, instead of the Virgin’s journey, the poem describesthe speaker’s journey and compares a purposeful sea voyage to a directed life.Balde’s poems are provided in their original Latin and in two translations. Missa Solemnis in B major, op. 27, vocal score and piano part (for rehearsal purposes only). Based on its Neo-classical style, this setting of the Roman Catholic mass text could possibly work as a festive mass (missa solemnis) with trumpets and timpani, and its duration would fit such a solemn service. However, its intense and sometimes dramatic treatment and universal addressability due to its well-known and rather concentrated text, yet also due to eliminating the „Filioque†(which would still fit the rhythm of the repeated „qui ex Patreâ€, should any Catholics ever wish to perform this as a mass) make it rather a „liturgical oratorio for all nationsâ€, more appropriate in the concert hall. The work has had a long gestation: imagined in 1984 after the composer’s first contact with Beethoven’s masterpiece, then sketched first in 1987-1989, and many of its themes date back from those years. Its working out is quite polyphonic, discretely modal and cyclical, and also full of centuries-old musical symbols traditionally associated with the setting of the mass text: e.g. unisons for the more dogmatical parts, Baroque dotted rhythms at the Nativity (the first coming of the  King of Kings), „rex caelestis†and also at his Passion (whose setting is discretely inspired by folkloric Romanian laments), the „anabasis†gesture at „Gloria in excelsis Deoâ€, „et ascendit in caelisâ€, „in remissionem peccatorum†and the resurrection, a flute trill standing for the Holy Spirit who has come ’like a dove’ at „et incarnatus estâ€, a cross-shaped texture at „crucifixusâ€, and some word-painting (hushed sonorities at „et invisibiliumâ€, anticipations between orchestra and chorus at „et exspecto†etc.). Moreover, certain symbolic roles are assigned to the instrumental groups when alone (the organ represents God the Father and transcendence, the winds and/or solo voices represent God the Son and humanity, and the strings represent the Holy Spirit). „Kyrie†is restrained and soft, besides the powerful chords opening the respective sections of its tripartite, simple structure, and it leans towards Palestrina’s serene modality and counterpoint. „Gloria†begins with a colorful orchestral introduction depicting discretely the shepherds who kept watch over their flocks right before the Nativity, and then gradually the bright revelation. „Credo†has an orchestral introduction as well, but powerful, recurring and based on the beginning of the plainchant hymn „Pange linguaâ€, made famous by Mozart’s last symphony and by other Classical composers. Both „Gloria†and „Credo†end with extended, powerful and elaborate fugues („in gloria Dei Patris†and „et vitam venturi saeculiâ€, respectively) with dramatic modulations and sometimes with enthusiastic syncopations at odds with the words’ accents, a la Stravinsky. The same sections plus „Agnus Dei†end with soft quartal harmonies suggesting transcendent appeasement (similar harmonies appear powerfully at the beginning of „Sanctusâ€). „Judicare†quotes the beginning of the well-known „Dies irae†plainchant tune, and the Consecration between the „Sanctus†and „Benedictus†sections is represented by a contemplative prelude for solo organ, quoting Lutheran chorales, too. Another long orchestral introduction, suggesting the Last Judgment and based on traditional Byzantine hymns, opens „Agnus Deiâ€, which includes another quotation (the famous ’Dresden Amen’ at „qui tollis peccata mundi†and „dona nobis pacemâ€). In the final section, with its refined simplicity, the choral voices enter in descending order, and the „Kyrie eleison†theme is briefly remembered, then it ends softly and peacefully. Total duration: 50 min.
