It was released in May 1982, as the lead single for the album Chicago 16. The song reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart in September of that year, where it remained for two weeks. It was the group’s second No. 1 single (their first was If You Leave Me Now) and their first top 50 hit since Tell No Lover in 1978. It spent twelve weeks in the top 5 of the Billboard Chart.Written by Peter Cetera (Chicago’s bassist, who also sang lead vocals) and the group’s producer David Foster (who played piano on the track), the song is about a person trying desperately to hold on to a relationship that has fizzled out, promising to make up for his/her indiscretions and playing the we’ve been through so much card.Hard to Say I’m Sorry was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America in September 1982. Frost referred to the poem as his “best bid for remembrance.†It was published, along with other celebrated poems, including “Fire and Ice†and “Nothing Gold Can Stay,†in his collection “New Hampshire†in 1923. I intended the slow repeating tone cluster chords in the last section as a solemn meditation on death. John Mason Neale, the writer of the text is best known for the hymns Good Christian Men, Rejoice, the carol Good King Wenceslas and the advent hymn O come, O come, Emmanuel. This attractive light arrangement uses divisi sopranos at one point and also includes an a cappella section. It’s a tuneful arrangement, easy on the ear and not especially difficult. Other SATB titles in this series of three Easter canticles are My Song is Love Unknown (Text by Samuel Crossman 1624-1683) and Alone Thy goes forth, O Lord (Text by Peter Abelard 1079-1142). In the audio sample, soprano is played by the flute, alto by the oboe, tenor by the clarinet and bass by the bassoon.

Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.522224). My Song Is Love Unknown is a known best as a hymn by Samuel Crossman, written in 1664. It is predominantly used as a hymn for Good Friday usually in a setting by John Ireland who evidently composed it over lunch one day. This is a completely new SATB setting of Crossman’s wonderful text by Colin Kirkpatrick. In this setting there are opportunities for alto and tenor solos though they can be sung tutti if more appropriate. The keyboard part is essential though there is an a capella section in the middle. The highest note in the soprano part is one A flat above the treble staff. This is an accessible arrangement with rich harmonies and soaring melodic lines. It is sure to be a success at Easter occasions. Other SATB titles in this series of three Easter canticles are Alone Thy goes forth, O Lord (Text by Peter Abelard 1079-1142) and A Time to Watch, A time to Pray (Text by John Mason Neale 1818-1866. In the audio sample, soprano is played by the flute, alto by the oboe, tenor by the clarinet and bass by the bassoon.

Matthew 19:21-30.Commissioned by St. Peter’s Choir, St. Louis, Missouri, David Sinden, Conductor, this anthem uses as its central text one of the Gospel’s best-known, yet least commonly sung, verses: “It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of heaven.†The music is expressive, beginning slowly in a homophonic texture and then branching out as the text is reflected. The ending returns to the opening material.

One of my best friends, the very talented artist Malcolm Tuffnell, lost his mother, Jacqueline, in 2010. One night, Malcolm posted some of his late mother's poetry on a social networking site. I was so moved by the ones I saw that I immediately asked to see more of them. I narrowed down my choices to eight sea-themed poems that became the basis for Seascapes.
