This beautiful arrangement combines two of the most common and well known melodies of “In the Bleak Midwinter,’ a poem written by Christina Rossetti into the same song. The first by Gustav Holst and the second by Harold Darke. This arrangement will take the audience through a journey of key signatures beginning in F Major, continuing through Bb, G, E and finally ending in Ab Major. Each key signature helps to convey the meaning of that particular verse. This is geared more towards a smaller choir, preferably a choir of 16 singers and it is also meant for one on a part situations. The harmonies in this arrangement are simple, yet powerful and reverent. I hope this arrangement helps remind us of the real reason why we celebrate Christmas. Gifts and Santa Claus are fun traditions but the real reason why we celebrate Christmas is because it is the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ. I hope you guys enjoy it!!!

In this arrangement, I hope to capture not only the beauty of the words and melody but also the starkness and chill of its setting.It is written for SATB with a descant on verse 4. There are also two optional C instrument parts. I suggest that the instruments refrain from playing throughout - possibly playing together for the intro and again on verse 4. Here, it has been arranged for double reed choir (2 oboes, English horn, 2 bassoons, contrabassoon). The arrangement contains minimal edits to the original score allowing for the performers to interpret the work as they choose.The opening solo is performed is the rich low register of the English horn followed by solo bassoon. Just as in the original work, the main theme is continuous, and the theme is passed around the ensemble to every part. The work concludes with a short and sweet duet between the contrabassoon and 1st oboe.This arrangement is an excellent way to close out a university double reed studio recital or Double Reed Day.
