Published by Reis Luke Aquino (A0.943136). This piece was conceptualized for the Holy Innocents Episcopal Church (Baguio City, Philippines) for the Good Friday service. The text comes from a set of short poems by Ms. Nava Faith Bawayan evoking short personal impressions and reflections on each of the traditional last seven words of Christ. The music are short musical impressions in a semi-contemporary (avant-garde) style, scored for an SATB choir, Tenor and Soprano Soloists and Piano. It features call and response passages between the soloists and the choir, short canons, and easy chord clusters for certain effects. The composer has considered these especially for choirs who are immersed in the Hymn singing tradition but are expanding into a more contemporary style of music.1. Father Forgive them2. The Apostle John’s visions in Revelation are nothing less than astounding to all readers. However, little is it known that another Hymn to Christ is neatly tucked into the very first seven verses of this last book of the Bible. John begins his Revelation (verses 1-3) with a prelude, introducing Jesus Christ and the apocalypse (revelation) that was made to him via the angel sent to describe all the things about which he was to write. He says, Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear, and keep what is written in it, for the time is near. After this short prelude, John delivers an epistolary opening (a greeting identifying the author and recipients), then pronounces a blessing upon the recipients-verses 4-6. After both the prelude and the opening, John immediately proceeds to another known Hymn to Christ, in verse 7, which I have called, Behold He Is Coming. When presented with the text in Revelation 1:7, I immediately thought, Where is the Gospel, the good news, in this piece? After several minutes of meditating on the text, I realized the Gospel message was right there in front of me-in the very last line: Yes, so be it [Lord], so be it, [Amen!] There will be peace! All will be known. Every single person will understand, at that point. The end, is the ushering in of a new beginning. The piece is scored in G minor for SATB with flute and Bâ™ clarinet accompaniment. In the opening phrase, we hear the clarinet on a sustained high (concert) G, which crescendos into a quick, descending sixteenth note pattern. There is urgency! The flute joins the clarinet in a duet to complete the introduction to the anthem. Then, the choir begins their haunting chant, Behold, He is coming with the clouds. Every eye will see Him, even those who pierced Him. Every eye will see Him and all the tribes of the earth will mourn over Him . Alas, there is peace! The two instruments dissolve into an a cappella four-part chorale where the choir creates the agreement between the text and the music, modulating to the relative major (Bâ™)-all is reconciled in a final Amen!

Published by David Jex (A0.925770). 2016 Choral Contest EntryArt is a fire! is a bold statement on the importance of Art in our lives and society.Composed for SATB Chorus and Piano it is of moderate difficulty, with a length of 3 1/2 minutes.. The text is from a poem written by our older son, Matthew. He has a gift to express ideas and emotions in words that I do not, and I was very pleased and excited when he gave me permission to set his poem to music. The music is in an overall ternary form, with the fiery outer sections tempered with a more spiritual middle segment. The piano plays an important but supporting accompanying role. The music is somewhat tonally oriented, with an E minor basis for the more passionate outer sections. These sections also require the choir to sing some chromatic melodic and harmonic lines and constructions. The rhythm also varies somewhat, asking the chorus to express these emotional portions of the piece. The flowing middle section has a more consistent tempo and is centered in C major. This key seems to have the qualities of innocence and peace, which offsets the more restless and fiery E minor of the rest of this work. This more meditative center section also has a more triadic basis than the somewhat contrapuntal textures surrounding it. It invites the music performers and listeners to experience the joy of Music and Art, while the closing music and text sing of the passion and energy of the artistic experience.

Love is and was my Lord and King is a delightful miniature in neo-baroque style. It is relatively straightforward as long as the singers can keep up with the modulations. Crossing the bar is quiet and meditative, again relatively straightforward although it requires (ideally) basses able to sing down to a low D-flat. Of old sat Freedom on the heights is by far the most demanding of the three but also the most exhilarating if performed well, with a piano part that is cheerfully out of sync with the choir for much of the time.

Suitable for both church and concert use, the music is both lyrical and dramatic. The “Sanctus†begins quietly, with divided sopranos trading off on a major second in a mysterious and meditative way. Parts add and build until the basses enter with a cantus firmus of sorts. The major second continues to figure prominently in the ensuing material. The movement ends with a simple melody repeated in unison (“Hosanna in excelsisâ€) fading away into the distance. Duration 3:55.
