The text comes from a set of short poems by Ms. Nava Faith Bawayan evoking short personal impressions and reflections on each of the traditional last seven words of Christ. The music are short musical impressions in a semi-contemporary (avant-garde) style, scored for an SATB choir, Tenor and Soprano Soloists and Piano. It features call and response passages between the soloists and the choir, short canons, and easy chord clusters for certain effects. Originally recorded by the American rock band Extreme in 1991, this SATB w/ divisi a cappella arrangement adds a flavor of vocal jazz with a hint of Imogen Heap inspiration. While solos throughout are optional, this chart was written to feature the entire ensemble over highlighting a single voice. Also, a slower tempo, tight harmonies and softer dynamics will contrast nicely against the upbeat tunes in your set. Finally, ensembles may elect to snap or use some other form of body percussion to keep time while your vocal percussionist can take a much needed breather! The music reminds me of little children skipping with glee under a bright blue morning sky. It needs to be sung with joy in the Lord, Who hears us when we call, forgives our sins, and gives us grace to love Him, keep his commands and do those things that are pleasing in His sight. It should be a wonder morning service anthem, but why not try it in the evening, too, in anticipation of meeting God at the beginning of the next day. The key to the style of this piece is rhythmic vitality. The 6/8 meter should be conducted in two, but singers (and the conductor) must feel the eighth note division of the beat as the composition's energizing rhythmic subtext. After the choir has learned the words, pitches and rhythms of the piece, have them let the text go for awhile, and replace it with the syllable doo for every eighth note value. That is, for every eighth note sing 'doo once; for every quarter note sing it twice; for every dotted quarter note sing it three times, and so on. You will hear some giggling from your singers. A choir score is available separately This carol is designed to be very easy to learn and perform. It needs to be accompanied by piano (simple part) and drum (no snare). A bodhran or cajon would work just as well. There is one minor-key tune for both the men and ladies to learn. (This works as a 4-part round later in the carol) · The men start, accompanied just by the piano ostinato. The drum doesn’t enter until bar 7, when the men finish their ‘drums drumming’ · While the ladies sing verse 2, the men sing ‘Drum, drum’ in consecutive 5ths. This choral work is sure to add excitement to your concert and it was given splendid reviews when it was first performed at London’s Royal Albert Hall. It was later performed at Croydon’s Fairfield Halls just outside London where it received a rapturous reception from the large audience. The work is ideal for music festivals (for which it was originally written) or any important event which needs a celebratory piece for choir and orchestra. The piece celebrates the endless joy of life and light, as children play on the seashore. The choral parts are not difficult and parts of the soprano could also be sung by children’s chorus if necessary. The words of the soprano solo part have a reflective, maternal quality as she watches the children playing on the shore. Singers are sure to enjoy the catchy melodies, the expressive soprano solo and the dramatic middle section of this work. Parts of the piece use several irregular time signatures. Don’t let them put you off! They are good deal easier than they look and the score contains indicates how they break down into simple units of two and three beats.The choral score contains a piano reduction of the orchestral score. The full orchestral score and parts are available separately from SMP. The orchestration is standard and requires: 2 flutes and piccolo, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets in B flat, 2 bassoons; 4 horns in F, 3 trumpets, 3 trombones, 1 tuba, timpani, percussion (4 players), violin 1, violin 2, viola, cello, double bass. A high-quality audio file containing the orchestral accompaniment is also available.The words are by the distinguished and much-loved Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941). He made significant contributions to literature and wrote a prodigious number of works including essays, philosophical treatises, journals, memoirs, short stories and letters. The text of this work is taken from two poems in the book entitled Gitanjali. The title is translated as Song Offerings and was largely responsible for Tagore winning the Nobel Prize for Literature. The book contains over one hundred poems, translated freely by the author into English from the original Bengali, published in 1910. The English version appeared in 1912 published by the Indian Society of London. The text has been adapted slightly for this choral setting.Colin Kirkpatrick has published a great deal of music and his publishers include Boosey & Hawkes, Novello, Paxton, Schott, Oxford University Press, Chester and Belwin Mills. His music has been performed and broadcast world-wide.

This composition starts with the original chant and then, in this less traditional polyphonic version, it keeps the original rhythms but continues with harmonies reminiscent of John Taverner. For the final - somewhat more extended - repetition, the measure is kept in 6/4 time and the basses provide a Western style ostinato while the original themes weave in canon above them. The sound sample is my own multitrack performance, transposed down a third. The more traditional homophonic version is also available. The score shows the Greek words transcribed into Latin letters, since more choirs can read those. However, the final page of the score provides the original words using Greek letters followed by this English translation: ... Blessed be you, O Christ our God Who showed the fishermen to be most wise you sent the Holy Spirit upon them and through them you caught the inhabited world in your net O Lover of Mankind Glory to you.
