As years come and go, one increasingly recalls memories of earlier times. One of the most vivid and cherished memories I have while growing up is of Sunday mornings, going to church, sitting in the same pew each week with my grandmother, hearing and singing the beautiful hymns of our faith, and then returning home to the aroma of beef slowly roasting in the oven. My father directed the church choir, my mother and older brothers sang in the choir, so the wonderful music of our faith was instilled in me from an early age. This medley, and others in the series, are arrangements of many of my favorite hymns from those early years, many of which have been lost in more recent editions. For this series, I have elected to use the older texts as that is the way they were first written and the way I first learned them. There is a reverence and beauty in the language enriching the vocal/choral tone which, I believe, is lost in contemporary, conversational, or politically correct syntax. I shudder to think of the day when a penitential phrase such as Hear thou my prayer, O Lord is rendered as Hey, God-dude, listen up - I'm talkin' atcha! I have also opted not to include the many wonderful hymns and carols which are associated with the major festivals of Christmas and Easter as those are commonly found in other collections. A caveat: I have no delusions, and I offer no pretenses, that these settings are great art. They are simply expressions of faith which I hope may bring a small measure of joy to other church musicians. The general concept of each medley is to present the hymn, often in its original chorale form, and then vary its harmony or texture. The hymns in this set include Make Me a Captive, Lord, Beneath the Cross of Jesus, and Abide with Me.

A wonderfully unique and emotive choir and ensemble arrangement of 'A Thousand Years' by Christina Perry for SATB divisi, piano, cello and bass. This bespoke score, commissioned by the Wiltshire High Sheriff for the Massed Choir Finale of Uncelebrated Journey. This concert was a wonderful collaboration of local performing arts groups, musicians, dancers and choirs, to celebrate local poet Alfred Williams, also known as 'The Railway Poet'. His story and works were brought to life through drama, dance and music, with an uplifting choral finale combining the voices and talents of Wessex Male Voice Choir, Janice Thompson Performance Trust Choir and vocal harmony group, 'Ten in a Bar'. Kirstie Smith has sensitively re-crafted this beautiful song to reflect the deep love shared between Alfred and his wife Mary, and their enduring love for each other is further painted through the second verse's Shania Twain / Mutt Lange style duet. This is a beautiful and accessible 21st Century, Neo-Romantic a cappella setting of the Spanish Hail Mary prayer (Dios te salve, MarÃa) for SATB chorus, perfect for choirs ranging from high school to college and beyond. Enrico Miaroma, Italian composer and choral conductor, writes about the pieces: Farewell was composed in 2011 for a youth choir of 45 young adults, working and having fun together in Arco (Trentino), for one marvellous week together with Gary Graden and myself. My aim was to compose a piece that young choristers would appreciate after intense and joyful days together. Through my music I wanted to share the range of emotions and the hardship of parting when they were to go home to their native countries again. The choice of such a beautiful and evocative text helped me a great deal to achieve this. Farewell is recorded by S:t Jacobs Chamber Choir and Gary Graden on the cd To the Field of Stars (Footprint Records FRCD 083). My Song is like a little brother to Farewell. From the very beginning, I had a strong feeling that the assonance between the words of the title, 'my song', and 'my son', was intended by the poet. Throughout the composing process, this kept coming back to me, bringing my little son, Giovanni, who is four years old, to mind. For this Christmas here is a dramatic a capella piece that is a Fantasia based on the old English carol God Rest You Merry Gentlemen. It is an eclectic fusion of Classical music and 1950's Free Jazz and West Indian/Caribbean rhythms with exuberance and pulse. It is in verse-refrain form, but is very freely treated and each of the four verses is wholly unique while expressing, and sometimes expanding upon, each word. There is no Time Signature and thus irregular measures which change every few bars which would utilize 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 5/4, 6/4, and 7/4, but always maintains a strong pulse. It contains abrupt changes in dynamics and a rubato tempo. This is a challenging work with dynamic results.8 pages (I have only printed the refrain once (after the first verse) and it is repeated the same after every verse. If I inserted it after each verse this would have been a 19 page score to print. Best to just memorize the short catchy refrain.)4:45 minutesI originally wrote this as an a capella piece. Years later I also transcribed it for Instrumental Quartet. If you do not wish to do this piece a capella there are 15 different Instrument Quartet combinations also published on this site which double the four voice parts and are all in the same concert key and can be used as accompaniment. Â The recording attached is of the Brass Quartet version which exactly doubles the SATB voices so that you can get an idea of the rhythms and harmonies. Â

So too in this, in my opinion, magnificent poem. Sometimes there’s very little movement, sometimes it courses on in a mighty and unfathomable manner. Never predictable. In 1958 Shanklin had suggested the song to a California lounge circuit duo Art and Dotty Todd. They liked the song and produced a demo recording, which was later released as a single by Era Records. Then, almost 20 years later, in 1976, the vocal jazz quartet The Manhattan Transfer came across a demo on cassette and decided to record a remake of Chanson d'Amour for their Coming Out album.
