However, this work intends to affirm for the listener that while things may change, we always adapt to keep up, and that nothing is ever truly lost to change. This work approaches the matter of change, perhaps ironically, via minimalistic techniques and an uplifting perspective. This song is an entirely secular work in Latin. It touches on some minimalist techniques and could be integrated into secondary school music lessons as a means of discussing minimalism and also as a means to introduce students to singing in Latin while avoiding religious ties. This work is written for SATB choir (a cappella) and is approximately 4.5 minutes in duration. The choral parts are largely diatonic and should be accessible to most audiences/ensembles. Bring His LoveInspiration (below is a note I sent to my sister) Hi Karen! In the fall of last year I started working on a new church anthem for FUMC. Over the years your choir has sung several pieces of mine; so I felt I should do something in return. I quickly got an idea for the music only (sometimes I will get some lyric ideas also, but didn't this time.) By the first of the year I had the basic structure sketched out on paper but then put it aside for Easter Rehearsals. When the pandemic stopped all church choirs I returned to the music and by early May had the score in the computer, close to completion. At that point I still didn't have any lyrics but began feeling that it should be about God's creation. All I could envision was a singer with his arms stretched out to the sun, the ocean, the moon, etc. while singing this piece. So I started searching for a possible prayer that might fit and came upon Canticle of the Son. As I read it through I liked the structure and began sketching out the lyrics. I couldn't help but wonder what our response should be to God's creation. How should we thank him or praise him or take care of it? I then turned my thoughts to FUMC and considered this - what phrase would sum up this churches mission? I almost immediately got Bring His Love. From there the balance of the lyrics fell into place. So attached is the recording and the music. I have no expectations but hope you and the choir enjoy the music. The Music The piece starts with 16th note broken chords in the upper register of the piano which lead to the opening theme. A tenor soloist begins by singing God's praises for all he has given us; ending with the thought How can we thank such kindness?; The answer Bring His Love the B section. At its conclusion we are returned to the opening theme, this time sung by the choir which again leads us to the same questionHow can we thank such kindness?, The answer Bring His Love the B section. A C section is then introduced with a change to a more beat driven accompaniment with the vocals alternating between the upper and lower voices. A return to the opening theme, with minimal chordal accompaniment, features the original soloist but then adds a second voice leading to a duet and a return to the broken chord accompaniment.. Finally the B section,Bring His Love is repeated and concludes in a rousing fashion.. Program Notes The piece could work very well for Earth Day celebrations.

I Am The Way, Church Anthem for Tenor Solo, SATB and Piano composed in March 2017. Inspiration Each of us, throughout our lives, are faced with choices where the path forward is unclear. Where the decision maybe a crossroad for our lives. Who can guide us? Who should we turn to? Jesus said I Am The Way? The Music A rousing church anthem that begins with the Tenor Soloist searching for answers. Presented with a difficult choice he asks Jesus what should I do now?, who will be my guide?. The choir responds with I Am The Way, offering the response in a polyphonic round, so to speak. Once completed, the opening melody returns sung by the choir followed by a repeat of the chorus. A C section is then introduced, in a minor key, reminding us to follow the Light as Darkness can deceive. The Tenor soloist returns with the opening melody, now with minimal accompaniment, giving a retrospective feeling to the music. The anthem closes with a repeat of the chorus followed by the Tenor soloist giving the piece a finality.

The first and last verses are mostly unison singing with the congregation invited to join in. The second verse is a simple two part canon, while the third verse is a straight four-part chorale, optionally a capella, with slightly different harmonization from the traditional carol. The text is an adaptation using a composite of a translation of the original Swedish along with variations of other commonly heard settings. This arrangement would work well for a modest choir looking for a new Advent anthem with minimal challenges.

Sometimes the song of a single voice, over time, evolves into a needed chorus of many. Such is Joni Mitchell’s anthem to activism “The Fiddle and the Drum†(1969).  Originally an anti-Vietnam-war protest song, the song has since been recorded 42 times, and counting, because it inspires us to “remember all the good things ‘we’ are… and because we have all come to fear the beating of ‘your’ drum.† This arrangement is scored for 8-part [SSAATTBB occasional divisi] chorus, with a very minimal piano part added for percussion-purposes only; essentially the piece is sung a cappella. The ‘piano’ part is actually an interpretation of a timpani and bass drum [2 players] accompaniment which is included with the score.  Performance time 3:48+- Note: this arrangement was conceived with large choral ensemble with mature voices in mind.  The registers are extreme for the bass and alto sections, but doable when building the overall sound of the ensemble and adjusting dynamic levels of the other voices.

Even though it is a funeral march, it is well suited for any musical performance occasion, being intended for beginner students who want to immerse themselves in the universe of romantic music, and nothing better than starting with the transitional composer of this period, which also does not prevent professional teachers from using it for recitals, academic presentations or didactic material in their classes as an ensemble practice. Ludwig van Beethoven's Piano Sonata No. 14 in C minor sharp, Op. 27, No. 2, is one of his most popular compositions and was an audience favorite even in his day. Written when Beethoven was 31, the Moonlight Sonata (Mondscheinsonate in German) was composed after he finished some commissioned works, but there is no evidence that he was hired to write this work. It did not receive its nickname until 1832, five years after Beethoven's death. It was the critic Ludwig Rellstab who compared the music to a moonlighting on Lake Lucerne. This comparison was adopted as a nickname for the work. Called Quasi una fantasia by the author - like its companion Op. 27, No. 1 - the piece was completed in 1801 and dedicated the following year to one of the composer's pupils. Beethoven chose to open the sonata with a slow, hypnotic arpeggio movement, the best known of the entire work. The dotted rhythm of its minimal melody evokes the tradition of 'Trauermusik' (funeral music).

Ken Litton (ASCAP)As an SBC music missionary active in Brazil I quickly discovered the hymns missionaries had taken with them as the work gained impetus from the 1890s when the Bagbys arrived to build on the foundation laid by early pioneers like Solomon Ginsburg. I found myself leading those hymns from the nearly 100 year old Cantor Cristão (Christian Singer) in the strongly attended evening services at the Igreja Batista Rio Doce (Sweet River Baptist Church) in Recife, with people literally leaning in through the windows from outside to sing along. Just a normal p.m. attendance or... curiosity about the missionary leading? No, certainly it was the message of the gospel in these great hymns and in the Brazilians’ creative work as well. I mainly remember holding that small print hymnal in one hand and leading with the other (shaking badly) and singing in Portuguese!From that kind of congregational participation I vividly remember the hymn Blessed be the Fountain by Eden Reeder Latta (1839 - 1915) and Henry Southwick Perkins (1833 -1914) with it’s energetic dotted eighth and sixteenth rhythm figures and text of confession based on Zechariah 13:1. That text was very important in the lives of disciples in Brazil and in my own heart. Here I have used only the verses of the text and tune, simply smoothing out the rhythm and adjusting the lyric to more modern usage (yet preserving the devotional pronouns Thee, Thy and Thine).The tune BLESSED BE THE FOUNTAIN is altered in rhythm, tempo and one descending interval from the original. The arrangement is by me, having built the intro, interlude and key change as well as the ending from the material that constituted the refrain in the origina. As a bridge and additional textual/musical impulse into the key change and final verse I’ve interpolated the refrain from the well-known gospel hymn Whiter than Snow (FISCHER) by James Nicholson and William G. Fischer.The voices include a wide variety of unison, two-part and four-part passages that are well within the capability of the average church choir. The accompaniment difficulty level is about as minimal as it can be I hope, while still reflecting support for the voices, a measure of variety as well as some real independence.I certainly think choirs of some ability and their dedicated accompanists will enjoyWhiter Than the Snow as much as I have in developing it.
