Composer’s Note - To Your ShoreMy cultural heritage is mixed: I was born of a Caucasian Australian father of Welsh descent and a Chinese mother from Penang who settled in Australia after some years in Brunei. Thus I find myself frequently pondering the immigrant experience. I wrote the text of T​o Your Shore​ ​to act as kind of twin soliloquies: the first from a person on a boat catching first sight of land, the second from another person standing on the shore ready to welcome the ship they spy on the horizon. I tried to evoke a mixture of trepidation and hope you might feel whilst on your way to a new life in a place where you don’t yet speak the language, where society’s customs and traditions are different, where the climate and the environment feel so very foreign to you, but where you might have a chance at building a happier life.-- Sally Whitwell

The arrangement is tailored for high schools, and community choirs for SATB and Brass Quintet. The movement exists in its entirety, mirroring the original for SATB and Orchestra. While the brass parts remain in a comfortable range for high school players, the endurance factor will challenge the students since the brass replaces the full orchestra. Of course, if the choral work is already a part of you library, you may just perform the original with the newly arranged brass parts. An 8.5 x 11 SATB score with piano is provided for rehearsal purposes. It may be duplicated as needed at a considerable cost savings where you to have to purchase the choral arrangement by itself. Make His Praise a Glorious Thing is a new setting of the English language's great doxology from the pen of Thomas Ken. It builds on his words with references to the multitude of Psalmic exhortations to exuberantly praise God in manifold ways and make His praise glorious. The character of the piece reflects this with a joyous and spirited aesthetic above a driving tempo. The text also juxtaposes our contemporary praises within the historic stream of doxologies from saints past and future as a precursor to the eternal, magnificent, and heavenly doxologies portrayed in Revelation 5 and 7. The melody correspondingly has roots in the traditional Old 100th Psalm tune as well, although it will take a keen ear to catch it.Although set for SATB choir, it is hoped that the accessible melody will find a place in your congregational singing also. Make His Praise a Glorious Thing is a wonderful call to worship, responsorial, or sacred concert opening or closing. Optional orchestration is available separately.

By way of introduction of the piece, in 2012, I met my wife, and very early on we had different trips planned. I was going to visit family and Cindy was going back to Paris, a place she had visited many times. So it was that we were almost literally a world apart. Upon both our returns, Cindy shared her many photos of Paris with me, a place I have never been. These photos were but a few that really made an impression on me and made me feel almost as I were there, even though Cindy was there (in one of the most romantic places in the world) as musicians would say, “solo. So the title of this piece suggests a telling of the story in pictures from her perspective.In performing this piece, it is preferable to have a tenor saxophonist who is equally comfortable in an orchestral setting as in a jazz quintet setting. Though all the jazz quintet parts are very specifically written, with either chord voicings and suggested solos, there is room for improvisation in these parts, but using a keen ear and direction to know when to align properly with the orchestra.In my recording of this piece, Maynard Ferguson Band alumni, Andy Weinzler is the featured tenor saxophonist. Many Western New York musicians came together to record this piece, and I thank them all for their incredible musicianship and willingness to perform this piece.

Jack and his Fortune is a major choral worked based on Flora Annie Steel's version of How Jack went out to seek his fortune. The original Irish folktale, Jack and his Comrades dates back to 1866. Throughout many years this story has taken on other similar stories like the well known Town Musicians of Bremen by Brothers Grimm. Each movement (six total) takes you on a grand journey of a boy named Jack who is seeking fortune. Not long after, several traveling companions (cat, dog, goat, bull and rooster) follow him in hopes of finding fortune as well.Traveling all day, the darkness began to settle for the night and they are in need of a place to stay. Finding a house, Jack discovers robbers counting their stolen gold. He comes up with a plan and scares the robbers away. Jack was smart and he knew that one of the robbers would be back in the middle of the night to take back the gold. He places each animal in different areas of the house to scare the robber away. What happens next is a frenzy of mishaps that eventually scare the robber away for good!

This is for an intermediate/advanced choir, though it is a good stretch for an intermediate choir in high school and college. There is a scat/solo group section that widens into a grand ending with a gospel-like ostinato at the end. Here is the place for your solo riffers and belters to solo at the end over top of the ostinato and have church at the end with your singers and audience. This is a crowd pleaser and a great concert ender.

A vivid and at times raucous celebration of Saturnalia, in Latin, for an ensemble of voices and instruments (including various percussion, woodwind and brass instruments). The sound sample is a sung performance by the composer with an electronic preview of the instruments. Further explanations: Song for Saturnalia - a raucous and fun romp - in whole tones (since there is scant evidence of the types of scales used in those days - whole tones just seem to work in this context). The Latin words make references to relatively modern times but the spirit of Saturnalia is timeless, after all. The pileum (also written pilleum) is the little cap that slave wore during Saturnalia to show they were free men and women on that day - they would point to their cap and say libertus sum (I am a free person) and omnes aequales sumus (we are all equal). The words (and translation - both by me) are as follows: Saturnalia Song Io Saturnalia! Hodie igitur dominus noster non es. [Hooray, it’s Saturnalia, so today you’re not our boss] Hodie omnes aequales sumus. Io! Campestrius is based on campester - a plain or place of clear ground (Blair is the Celtic equivalent word - a forest clearing!) Candelarius is based on candela - a taper or candle - ie something burning hence Brandt (yes, I know he’s earlier than the other two politicians, but, hey, it’s all a bit of anachronistic fun!)].

It was published in 1929, and subsequently included in Youmans musical play Great Day. To today’s ear the lyrics speak about the power of music to brighten one’s day. The original lyrics however contain text that is considered derogatory and worthy of a study of the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920’s to better understand popular American music and racial stereotypes of the early 20th century. This arrangement is scored for a 4-part SATB ensemble with piano accompaniment. Performance time: 3:20. An apt signature tune for choirs.

Yes! A choral arrangement of a Bob Dylan Song! This is an SATB+piano arrangement of one of Bob Dylan's perhaps lesser known folk tunes, but one of his most plaintive and heartfelt songs. With Dylan's exquisite sense of analogy, he paints a heartfelt portrait of Americana. The difficulty level would be intermediate. This is an excellent example of homophonic choral writing in an authentic American style, emphasizing characteristics of American folk songs, connection to nature and humanity. This would be an excellent show stopper, end of concert, or other appropriate place in a program. For students, this builds choral tone, has solo, unison, two, three, and full choral singing, and a small solo. The theme builds community, and respect and love for nature and humanity. This has simple warm harmonies that exemplify American folk music, yet with a modern touch. I guarantee you will love this piece and it will find it's place in your permanent library. Perfect For Earth Day or general service in a church setting, the text is general, fits almost any church service.
