Published by Scott Bussen (A0.1380143). “Ode to a Cow†is a poem written over 100 years ago. While the original author of the poem will probably remain unknown, or questioned, the anonymity of the work sets it apart. Dozens of poets from the time could have penned its lines. As a composer and songwriter for many years, I see these old anonymous poems as a means to time-travel and collaborate with the poets of yore and provide my own musical interpretations of their works. This poem literally turned itself into a song on its own in just a few minutes - chords, melody, etc. This was 20 years ago and with each performance the song takes on new meaning. In a choral setting, the lines becomes even more nuanced. Each choir will interpret the piece differently. The punchline, or hook, is delivered five times and the complex simplicity within the text gently urges the whims of the choir for interpretation. This energy is certainly capable of extending far beyond the audience’ ears and facilitates the stirring of one’s imagination. Complex questions, simple advice - presented by the voices of a choir.

This 9-minute motet in which the Buddha-to-be Dharmakara praises His master, Lokeshvaraja Buddha and vows to become the Savior of all Beings (namely, Amida Buddha). The music beings with an extended recitative/aria by solo soprano, and proceeds to the full choral ensemble to its conclusion. The MP3 Audio Clip is a computer-generated soundfile of the entire work. And time.I always focus carefully on any texts I wish to use, read and rhythmize them in different ways they could be read and interpreted, and choose words and sentences that deserve to be emphasized, to stop and ponder on, or simply let go and flow. So too in this, in my opinion, magnificent poem. Sometimes there’s very little movement, sometimes it courses on in a mighty and unfathomable manner. Never predictable. It has been recorded and performed many times, notably by Odetta, and by Joan Baez at the 1963 March on Washington, where Dr. Martin Luther King delivered his indelible I Have A Dream speech.Both the text and the melody have evolved over time, and variations abound. This setting reflects my own interpretation of several traditional versions, and combines traditional and more contemporary harmonic choices. The lyrics for this 4-minute polyphonic choral piece are an English translation from an ancient Buddhist sutra called the Larger Sutra on Amida Buddha (a.k.a. Sukhavati Vyuha Sutra), delivered by Shakyamuni Buddha some 2,500 years ago. In it we hear the Buddha extolling the great saving Light of Amida Buddha, the transcendental savior of all suffering beings. Intoning the 12 resplendent Lights of Amida, the music goes through the circle of 5ths in rapid modulation in the middle portion of the piece. The music is completely diatonic (with some unorthodox voice-leading), starting and ending in B-flat Major but proceeding through many modulations. The accompanying MP3 recording is computer-generated.

This Buddhist cantata in 7 movements (duration: 21:30) is a setting of passages from the Mahayana sutra, the Lotus Sutra, delivered by Shakyamuni Buddha some 2500 years ago. This highly energetic yet contemplative music expresses the vastness of the Buddha's wisdom and compassion. The final section is music in adoration of Amida Buddha (Amitabha, Amitayus) expressing the composer's faith in this great Buddha. The Score, which is completely revised from its original 1997 version, includes the complete Text and Instrumental Parts. The audio file is of the work's premiere performance by the Somerville Community Chorus, David Giessow conducting (Dec. 1997).

Generations grew up hearing this tune played on (perhaps) a WurliTzer 153 Band Wagon that accompanied their carousel ride in many a fairground on a sunny afternoon. In 1950 the music was adapted by Irving Aaronson and Paul Francis Webster and featured in the MGM biographical film “The Great Carusoâ€. It was later recorded by Mario Lanza, thus making it an ‘Italian-American favorite’. This arrangement is scored for 4-part SATB ensemble with piano accompaniment. Performance time: 3:00+- This tune is an excellent opening number for an outdoor summer’s evening community engagement concert, or the theme song for a concert about opera and/or opera singers, or a performance about opera’s connection to it’s sister art form – film.

Enrico Miaroma, Italian composer and choral conductor, writes about the pieces: Farewell was composed in 2011 for a youth choir of 45 young adults, working and having fun together in Arco (Trentino), for one marvellous week together with Gary Graden and myself. My aim was to compose a piece that young choristers would appreciate after intense and joyful days together. Through my music I wanted to share the range of emotions and the hardship of parting when they were to go home to their native countries again. The choice of such a beautiful and evocative text helped me a great deal to achieve this. Farewell is recorded by S:t Jacobs Chamber Choir and Gary Graden on the cd To the Field of Stars (Footprint Records FRCD 083). My Song is like a little brother to Farewell. From the very beginning, I had a strong feeling that the assonance between the words of the title, 'my song', and 'my son', was intended by the poet. Throughout the composing process, this kept coming back to me, bringing my little son, Giovanni, who is four years old, to mind.
