In Matthew 5-7 in The New Testament and in 3 Nephi 12-14 in The Book of Mormon, Another Testament of Jesus Christ, our Savior teaches us the way to contentment and happy living through The Beatitudes. These gems of Christian living were taught by Jesus as the initial part of the most well-known of his teachings called The Sermon on the Mount. The word “beatitude†comes from the Latin “beatitudo†meaning “blessedness.†Each of the eight beatitudes in this book consists of two phrases: the condition and the result. Together, these illustrate a set of ideals focusing on love and humility, echoing the highest of Jesus’ teachings on spirituality and compassion. Each also promises a future reward, and the themes appear to escalate from beginning to advancing levels of responsibility and spirituality as the Sermon progresses. By the end of the Sermon a recipient would have earned the reward to stand ceremonially in the presence of God, and to ultimately gain the greatest reward of living with Him in heaven. The purpose of this book is to praise our Lord through song and text, rejoicing in the gifts we receive from Him as we do as He suggests. The single word of text, Hallelujah, is repeated in various ways, at times contemplative and in others jubilant and forceful, but always filled with awe. The choral parts are meant to be vocally unchallenging to allow the singers to focus on the expression of each phrase. The piano part, on the other hand, is intended to be technically challenging, and provides a foil which, when juxtaposed against the voices, adds yet another nuance of meaning to the words.

Canticle of the Sun is a declaration of love and gratitude to our beautiful planet, to its creator and all living beings that inhabit it. This piece comes from my first major, extended work, A Prayer for Mother Earth, that was premiered at the Carnegie Hall on May 28, 2016. Canticle of the Sun is the most popular sacred poem of the Italian literature, written in 1224 by Francis of Assisi. It is a prayer, a hymn of thanksgiving and praise to God for the creation of the world.  Be praised, my Lord, through Sister Water;she is very useful, and humble, and precious, and pure.  In this movement (which is the 3rd of five) the orchestration is very delicate, the strings often playing pizzicato. The piano plays an important role, introducing the principal theme that is later taken up by the voices. In its effortless use of various elements of Baroque practice, I have written a piece which will hopefully be useful for high schools and community colleges with smaller choirs to get students to sing works which can prep them for repertoire. Churches will also find this a work appropriate for any festive occasion and also useful in telling people that composers actually exist today who like the bygone way of doing things. And also with a rather exciting piano part! I certainly enjoy raising the bar.To that end, the A section can be sung on its own as a separate piece, as it is deliberately easier than the B section, which has more chromatic and polyphonic passages. This is the perfect piece to convey to high school students the impression that Baroque music can be exciting, spontaneous, and not old-fashioned, and in a matter which will be immediately perceived to be authentic.The ad libitum trumpet parts are available directly from the composer. Though they are not strictly necessary for a successful performance, they do give a special spice and festive aura that can only be beneficial.
