Published by David Warin Solomons2 (A0.958401). The Three Gates was composed during the first two weeks of March in 2007, shortly after Ford began reading Dante's The Divine Comedy. It is dedicated to the British composer and singer David Warin Solomons, a fellow member of the Delian Society. Ford's musical style in these three movements, the last two of which include the organ, was strongly influenced by his familiarity with the music of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, particularly the polyphony of Josquin and the operas and madrigals of Monteverdi, although elements drawn from composers as diverse as Gesualdo, Beethoven, and Liszt also come into play.

A setting for unaccompanied mixed choir (SATB) of the poem FIRE AND ICE by Robert Frost (1874 - 1963). Duration ca. 3'15.Published in December 1920 in Harper's Magazine and again in 1923 in his Pulitzer Prize−winning book New Hampshire, Fire and Ice is one of Robert Frost's most popular poems. Some have asserted that the poem is a compression of Dante's Inferno. In an anecdote he recounted in 1960, prominent astronomer Harlow Shapley claimed to have inspired Fire and Ice in an encounter with Frost a year before the poem was published. Frost asked Shapley how the world will end, and Shapley responded that either the sun will explode and incinerate the Earth, or the Earth will somehow escape this fate only to end up slowly freezing in deep space. Suggested Double Chorus size: 32 singers (4S, 4A, 4T, 4B / 4S, 4A, 4T, 4B ). This is the composer's early computer engraving of the manuscript which was used in the World Premiere Performance by the Seattle Choral Company, Fred Coleman, Conductor, Meany Theatre, Seattle, June 2, 1996. The work is a setting of five poems by Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882) for Chorus and Orchestra, commissioned by the Seattle Choral Company.

Upbeat and happy, it will be instantly recognizable to anyone of a certain generation, and would work well as a crowd-pleaser, or an energizing contrast after a ballad.This moderately difficult SATB arrangement follows the style and form of the original, and the choruses sometimes repeat themselves, which makes it easier to learn.

The lyrics were written in 1847 by Henry Francis Lyte, an English pastor, poet and musician, only a few weeks before he died from tuberculosis. He was inspired by Saint Luke's account of Christ's appearance with His two disciples on the way to Emmaus: They urged Him strongly: Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over. (Luke 24:29). The music was composed by William Henry Monk, music editor of the famous Anglican Church hymnal Hymns Ancient and Modern, and it was included in the first edition of that hymnal in 1861. Mrs. Monk has described in her own words the context: This tune was written at a time of great sorrow - when together we watched, as we did daily, the glories of the setting sun. As the last golden ray faded, he took some paper and penciled that tune which has gone all over the earth. This score is the complete version of Abide With Me for choir SATB.
