Thanks, John. Laughter in the Rain is a song composed and recorded by Neil Sedaka, with lyrics by Phil Cody. It includes a 20-second saxophone solo by Jim Horn. The opening chord of the chorus was based on that used by John in Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, which Sedaka has described as a drop-dead chord. He combined that with a pentatonic melody inspired by Aaron Copland. Cody claims to have written the lyrics in about five minutes after smoking marijuana and falling asleep under a tree for a couple of hours.

The poet asks us to recognize that God comes to us and is present in everything around us, in the things we see, experience and feel. God ever comes and touches us with joy. We recognize God in our songs, in our moods, in sorrow, in joy, in our daily lives.This music is scored for SATB choir and viola. If a violist is not available, a violin can substitute. A piano reduction of the choral parts can be used just for rehearsal, or also in the performance if necessary. A contemporary of William Shakespeare and John Milton, God-child to poet John Donne, Herbert is associated with the 17th-century Metaphysical poets and “is remembered as a pivotal figure: enormously popular, deeply and broadly influential, and arguably the most skillful and important British devotional lyricist of his or any other time.” Shortly before his death in 1633 at age 39, Herbert directed that a manuscript of his religious poems be sent to his fellow clergyman and friend, Nicholas Ferrar, reportedly saying, “Tell him ... if he can think it may turn to the advantage of any dejected poor Soul, let it be made publick: if not, let him burn it: for I and it, are less than the least of God’s mercies.” First published in 1633, The Temple was an enormously popular work, totaling more than 20,000 copies printed in 13 editions between 1633 and 1679.“Let All the World in Ev'ry Corner Sing” is the refrain of Herbert’s poem, “Antiphon (I),” which appeared in the “Christian Life” section of The Temple. An antiphon may be defined as a short sentence or refrain sung or recited before or after a psalm or canticle; and in Herbert's short poem of two stanzas, he may also have intended that the verses be recited antiphonally (alternately) by two groups. The Old Palmer Song is a favourite Australian folk song that is meant to be sung in a rollicking style that reflects the excitement and anticipation of hardy Australian colonials setting out in search of gold. Following hard on the heels of the great California gold rushes (1848 – 1855) came the discovery of payable quantities of gold in Australia. The first gold rush in Australia began in New South Wales in May 1851 after prospector Edward Hargraves discovered gold near Orange, at a site he called Ophir. Other discoveries quickly followed, including those at Ballarat and Bendigo in the colony of Victoria. Then came Rosewood and Gympie (1867) in Queensland; the Gawler region in South Australia in 1868; and Halls Creek (1885), Kalgoorlie and Coolgardie (1893) in Western Australia. One of Australia’s richest alluvial goldfields was that of the Palmer River in far north Queensland. The rush to the Palmer began in 1873 and lasted for about three years. The goldfields were nearly 100 miles inland from the small coastal settlement of Cooktown and the early prospectors had a hard time of it just getting to the field. Leaving Cooktown they crossed the coastal mangroves, then on through dense tropical rainforest, into the more open eucalypt forest beyond and then across the dry, inhospitable and rugged country of the hinterland dissected by wide and deep rivers. And always there was the risk of meeting with fierce resistance from the Aborigines whose tribal land they were travelling through. At the height of the rush there were around 35,000 prospectors on the Palmer (including a great many Chinese). By the time the rush was over, the Palmer had yielded over 100 tons of gold! The Old Palmer Song is set to the tune of Ten Thousand Miles Away, a shore ballad/sea shanty that probably originated in Ireland in the early 19th Century.

Missa Solemnis in B major, op. 27, vocal score and piano part (for rehearsal purposes only). Based on its Neo-classical style, this setting of the Roman Catholic mass text could possibly work as a festive mass (missa solemnis) with trumpets and timpani, and its duration would fit such a solemn service. However, its intense and sometimes dramatic treatment and universal addressability due to its well-known and rather concentrated text, yet also due to eliminating the „Filioque†(which would still fit the rhythm of the repeated „qui ex Patreâ€, should any Catholics ever wish to perform this as a mass) make it rather a „liturgical oratorio for all nationsâ€, more appropriate in the concert hall. The work has had a long gestation: imagined in 1984 after the composer’s first contact with Beethoven’s masterpiece, then sketched first in 1987-1989, and many of its themes date back from those years. Its working out is quite polyphonic, discretely modal and cyclical, and also full of centuries-old musical symbols traditionally associated with the setting of the mass text: e.g. unisons for the more dogmatical parts, Baroque dotted rhythms at the Nativity (the first coming of the  King of Kings), „rex caelestis†and also at his Passion (whose setting is discretely inspired by folkloric Romanian laments), the „anabasis†gesture at „Gloria in excelsis Deoâ€, „et ascendit in caelisâ€, „in remissionem peccatorum†and the resurrection, a flute trill standing for the Holy Spirit who has come ’like a dove’ at „et incarnatus estâ€, a cross-shaped texture at „crucifixusâ€, and some word-painting (hushed sonorities at „et invisibiliumâ€, anticipations between orchestra and chorus at „et exspecto†etc.). Moreover, certain symbolic roles are assigned to the instrumental groups when alone (the organ represents God the Father and transcendence, the winds and/or solo voices represent God the Son and humanity, and the strings represent the Holy Spirit). „Kyrie†is restrained and soft, besides the powerful chords opening the respective sections of its tripartite, simple structure, and it leans towards Palestrina’s serene modality and counterpoint. „Gloria†begins with a colorful orchestral introduction depicting discretely the shepherds who kept watch over their flocks right before the Nativity, and then gradually the bright revelation. „Credo†has an orchestral introduction as well, but powerful, recurring and based on the beginning of the plainchant hymn „Pange linguaâ€, made famous by Mozart’s last symphony and by other Classical composers. Both „Gloria†and „Credo†end with extended, powerful and elaborate fugues („in gloria Dei Patris†and „et vitam venturi saeculiâ€, respectively) with dramatic modulations and sometimes with enthusiastic syncopations at odds with the words’ accents, a la Stravinsky. The same sections plus „Agnus Dei†end with soft quartal harmonies suggesting transcendent appeasement (similar harmonies appear powerfully at the beginning of „Sanctusâ€). „Judicare†quotes the beginning of the well-known „Dies irae†plainchant tune, and the Consecration between the „Sanctus†and „Benedictus†sections is represented by a contemplative prelude for solo organ, quoting Lutheran chorales, too. Another long orchestral introduction, suggesting the Last Judgment and based on traditional Byzantine hymns, opens „Agnus Deiâ€, which includes another quotation (the famous ’Dresden Amen’ at „qui tollis peccata mundi†and „dona nobis pacemâ€). In the final section, with its refined simplicity, the choral voices enter in descending order, and the „Kyrie eleison†theme is briefly remembered, then it ends softly and peacefully. Total duration: 50 min. The church had cleared the return of the choir, post pandemic, and it was my first Sunday of singing in well over a year. That Sunday as I recited the creed something happened when I reached the line “And His Kingdom Will Have No Endâ€. Was it louder? Was it spoken with greater conviction? Something was different! Maybe it was just me. I'm not sure but all I know is that every Sunday thereafter it had the same impact on me. Within a few weeks I decided to compose a choral piece about that very line. I had to! The Music For the most part the harmony and structure are traditional but do contain harmonic structures with a contemporary flair. The arrangement is refrain, verse, refrain, verse, bridge and then refrain. The first and 3rd refrains are highly similar while the second refrain contains a soprano section descant while featuring the bass's carrying the main melody. The overall intent of the music is that on every return to the refrain, it is louder than the previous refrain. This signifies the singers confidence growing, in the existence of God's Kingdom, after each verse. With that said the piece starts quietly, almost being heard from a distance. The refrain lyrics speak to the hope that we carry for God's kingdom while the verses speak to God and Jesus in a more intimate way. The bridge speaks to the strength of the Kingdom and then leads back to the opening refrain, now in double forte. The high point in the piece is reached where volume, emotion and a significant ritard occur at the phrase “we'll be togetherâ€. From there the piece decreases in volume ending in a quiet confidence repeating “No end, no end, no endâ€.

This piece was premiered by the Chamber Choir of Stillwater Christian School in December of 2016, a mere three weeks after its composition. Hunter says of the piece: It was presented to the choir as a 'read through' piece in rehearsal, but instantly became a favorite and was added to our concert program at the last minute. It has since become a staple of our Christmas literature, and has consistently been a Christmas favorite for both our choirs and our audiences. On April 8, 2024, I had the privilege to be able to view a solar eclipse in totality. I'd previously seen one at around 99% totality, but 100% is a completely different experience. I periodically glanced at the sun in my protective glasses, watching the disc shrink down to nothing, not expecting much other than the absence of a sun. But I looked away for a moment, and my son suddenly cried, It's there!I turned and gasped: the sky was a flat twilight blue, and a crisp brilliant ring glowed in the sky, safe to view with the naked eye. The world was still, strangely silent, alien and new. We all tried to grab as many pictures as we could. After a few minutes, the moon continued its arc across the sky, and the sun's glare abruptly reappeared, already blinding even as a sliver. I can still see that ring in my mind's eye, fiercely burning, as if someone had literally cut a circle out of the sky and exposed another universe behind it.In this piece I tried to capture the growing ominous wonder of an eclipse approaching totality. While the 2024 eclipse was not visible in Russia, the Russian word for sun, Ñолнце (solntse), has a lily-like fragility to it that the English equivalent does not. Various parts of the choir repeat the word throughout the piece, and the repeated ts and s sounds should create a percussive susurrance. Stagger breathing should be used throughout.Also repeated is the Russian word for moon, луна (luna). As the eclipse approaches that crystalline moment of totality, the moon becomes more and more prominent and the text more chantlike. The refrain, first sung by a solo bass at bar 7, and sung in variation by the other parts thereafter, is repeated in its original form once by the sopranos near the top of their range. This represents the sun in final desperate ecstasy, before it too collapses into the inevitability and madness of occultation.After an indefinite sudden pause, the shock of the moment, the choir reverently sings suscipe deprecationem nostram. Glorificamus te. As the moon frees the sun from its cold grip, the menace of the previous section threatens to return, but just as quickly fades, revealing once again Ñолнце в небе (the sun in the sky).
