Four movements; a cappella SATB choir or quartet; ca. 9 min.The composer writes: I almost titled this work “Four Elizabethan Love Songs.†However, while such a title might be appropriate for a group of songs about the joys of loving relationships, the texts I have chosen do not all fit that mould. Of the four, only Christopher Marlowe’s seductive “The Passionate Shepherd to His Love†and Shakespeare’s wise and insightful Sonnet 116 address requited love. On the other hand, John Donne’s “The Message†is a “hate-songâ€, an angry poem about love gone wrong, bursting with bitter recriminations. And Elizabeth I’s “When I Was Fair and Young,†is wistful and full of regret: the Queen realizes that her own youthful pride has obstructed her opportunities for happiness. Together, these poems offer four dramatically contrasting views about love.

The song is one of many found in the novel, The Earth Woman Tree Woman Quartet, also written by Connie Pwll Walck Tyler. It is a call for people to see themselves as part of the whole earth, to join the Dance of Life, the central metaphor of the novel. It opens with a haunting call by the French Horn, and then the tenors, before the drums, marimba, and the other voices join. There is a soprano descant at measure 71 that can be sung as a solo. Peace, peace, laughter and dance, joy and life for us all. Sing your tears, sing your fears.... The piece is about four minutes long. The words are:Arise! This traditional Irish hymn may also be appropriate for just about any day of the year, especially so at services before or after St. Patrick's Day. This hymn is for SATB w piano accomp. It may be performed a cappella. Written for quartet, very large quartet, or choir in church, school, or community choral groups. A pianist or organist may play the four parts along with the choir. This hymn is short and may be used as a benediction at the end of a religious service. Of course it is very useful within a choral concert performance of any sort. Just sing it softly when required, sing it sweetly, and your audiences will love it. This traditional Irish blessing is an ancient Celtic prayer. Celtic literature is famed for using images of nature and everyday life to speak of how God interacts with His people. May the road rise up to meet you is about God's blessing for your journey in life - may your walk be an easy one, with no mountains to climb or obstacles to overcome. It alludes to three images from nature - the wind, sun and rain as pictures of God's care and provision: The wind can be likened to the Spirit of God, which helps move you along on rough days. The sun's warmth in the prayer reminds us of the tender mercies of God, by which the rising sun will come to us from heaven. The soft falling rain speaks of God's provision and sustenance. Finally, we are reminded that we are held safe in God's loving hands as we travel on our journey through life.

The song has remained popular throughout the years but was particularly brought into public eye when the folk-rock duo Simon and Garfunkel covered it incorporating lyrics of their own.
