English.In the summer of 2011, while I was visiting my friends Don and Sally Roberts in Santa Fe, Sally asked me if I would be interested in writing a new choral work for Don in celebration of his upcoming 75th birthday. The idea appealed to me very much, so I readily agreed to write the piece. Since Don has enjoyed a lifelong interest in the American Southwest Pueblo people and their customs, Sally provided me with several Tewa texts, in English translation, to consider for musical setting. I was particularly drawn to the imagery of Song of the Sky Loom, so that poem became the basis for the new work. The music begins with two baritone soloists singing an introductory 'call-and-response' to which the entire chorus eventually responds. The opening line of text is first presented in fragmented form, as if voices from all areas of nature gradually rise up and then merge into a unified chordal texture. As the text turns to the imagery of weaving, the musical texture, accordingly, becomes contrapuntal: individual melodic lines, sung by solo voices or small groups (the 'weft'), intertwine with each other and also with the main chorus, which provides the overall harmonic structure (the 'warp'). The following chorale section, infused with occasional chromatic inflections, represents the massive 'rainbow' in the text and brings the work to a unified conclusion. Song of the Sky Loom was first performed by the Santa Fe Desert Chorale, under the direction of Joshua Habermann, on July 19, 2016 with three subsequent performances during the following two weeks. -Frank Ferko Duration: 6:07.

It continued then as the capital of the Ottoman empire, and has since 1930 been called Istanbul, the Turkish understanding of the sound of Greek: Stin Poli (= to the City). This Hymn survived in the Greek Orthodox Church and has both a secular and a religious character, as it records the end of the 1100 years glorious era, as well as it is lamenting the religious restrictions the Greek Orthodox Church was subjected to as a result of the Islamic Occupation. Feature a soprano soloist or the section on an ethereal descant that elevates the texture to sublime heights.This piece came about for two different reasons. The initial musical idea evolved while I was working on a short study for piano, so the piece was strictly instrumental.The other idea stemmed from a discussion with my friend and mentor Dr Phillip Cooke, about why the word “Alleluia is so commonly used in choral music. Apart from the obvious reasons – “Alleluia being a significant word in the sacred music tradition, and so on – we discussed the multiple possibilities a composer has with a word like that, in the sense that different syllables can be stressed, such as alleluia, alleluia or alleluia.This was something I used as the other structural building block in the composition, and I added “Alleluia as the only word, but with the emphasis moving to different syllables throughout the piece. For me, the setting of a single word like “Alleluia is far from any texts I usually set. The word, however, has a strong anchorage in musical tradition and composers have always set this word in all kinds of different ways.In this composition, I am interested in the word itself, the build-up of the word, the structure of the music, and adding something to the musical tradition of setting this famous word to music.This piece was premiered by the University of Aberdeen Chapel Choir at King’s College Chapel in Aberdeen, Scotland. The performance was conducted by their Director of Chapel and Ceremonial Music, Stuart Muir. – Henrik Dahlgren.
