For a whole week of Valentine's Day have your students use this fun and engaging sight reading practice with love songs THEY WILL KNOW! I use it as a warm up/ do now at the start of band and choral classes for the first 5-10 minutes or so.These are quick 2, 4, and 8 measure examples totaling 10 songs for the students to practice sight reading using solfege.There are some tricky syncopated rhythms involved as well as key changes (C, G, F, D, Bb).The songs included in the 10 examples are, in order:1. Written in December of 2020 for Be near me when my light is low, a collaborative Requiem by the composers of Inversion Ensemble (a conductor-composer collaborative based in Austin, Texas), the Offertory movement text is a modern English rendition of the Offertory (“Domine Jesu Christe†and “Hostias et preces tibi, Domineâ€) from the traditional Latin Requiem Mass. The Offertory is introduced by a light, flowing sixteenth note pattern in the righthand of the piano that is rhythmically repetitive and meditative. The voices then appear in unison at first, gradually beginning to divide into harmony as the piece progresses until at the word death they fall back into a stark, unaccompanied unison. The Archangel Michael appears in the section that follows, leading the souls of the faithful to eternal light as the music crescendos and moves through an accelerando, ending on a triumphant C major chord on the final repetition of eternal light. A motive of assurance that this light is promised to the faithful for all eternity is presented in E-flat major, a motive that will reappear in the finale of the piece. The flowing sixteenth notes and harmonic shifts of the first section return at Sacrifices and praises we offer you, O Lord. The movement concludes with a fugue in the victorious key of C major, once again offering comfort to Christ's faithful ones through the assurance of heavenly light for all eternity.

The choir is forte by measure 8, at which point Mozart's contribution to the movement is interrupted by his death. It is suggested that Süssmayr used materials from Credo of one of Mozart's earlier masses (Mass in C major, K. 220 Sparrow) in completing this movement. This double choir a cappella arrangement of Lacrimosa from Mozart's Requiem KV626 is faithful but challenging. Soprano's are required to reach top b's for this arrangement to work well. Translation:Full of tears will be that dayWhen from the ashes shall arise The guilty man to be judged;Therefore spare him, O God,Merciful Lord Jesus,Grant them eternal rest. Published by David Jex (A0.925770). 2016 Choral Contest EntryArt is a fire! is a bold statement on the importance of Art in our lives and society.Composed for SATB Chorus and Piano it is of moderate difficulty, with a length of 3 1/2 minutes.. The text is from a poem written by our older son, Matthew. He has a gift to express ideas and emotions in words that I do not, and I was very pleased and excited when he gave me permission to set his poem to music. The music is in an overall ternary form, with the fiery outer sections tempered with a more spiritual middle segment. The piano plays an important but supporting accompanying role. The music is somewhat tonally oriented, with an E minor basis for the more passionate outer sections. These sections also require the choir to sing some chromatic melodic and harmonic lines and constructions. The rhythm also varies somewhat, asking the chorus to express these emotional portions of the piece. The flowing middle section has a more consistent tempo and is centered in C major. This key seems to have the qualities of innocence and peace, which offsets the more restless and fiery E minor of the rest of this work. This more meditative center section also has a more triadic basis than the somewhat contrapuntal textures surrounding it. It invites the music performers and listeners to experience the joy of Music and Art, while the closing music and text sing of the passion and energy of the artistic experience.

Published by Phil Beaman (A0.1373417). I originally wrote Total Eclipse as an expressive Art Song for solo voice and piano. Â I used several lines of poetry from Newburgh Hamilton (1741) and set them to unique music that is a fusion of Classical, Romantic, and Modern, with a touch of Pop. Â The music expressively drifts from major to minor to modal every few measures, inspired by the themes of darkness and light. Â When I adapted it for SATB I filled out the already rich harmony and added ethereal 'oo's under some of the melody. Â In a few brief measures, at different places, SAB each will have a divisi line where it splits to 2 parts. Â (The texture is never thicker than 5 parts at once.) Â This approachable piece of music is a good introduction for singers to the interpretation of an Art Song and is a dramatic performance piece for concert. Â And perfect for the upcoming April 8 total eclipse!(Haydn also used variations of this text to create several Recitatives and an Aria for his oratorio Samson.) Â 10 pages, 2:00 minutesVocal Ranges: Â all 1 octave; Sop - middle C to C; Alto - low G to G; Tenor - D to C; Bass - G to Gattached recording is of the original solo voice version which SATB is closely based on.
