The sound sample here was performed by the Composer's Choir under Dan Shaw. ring ding dong ding dong ring ding dong ding dong It was a lover and his lass in the spring time that through the city streets did pass in this ring time calling each other every minute or two and texting in case they couldn't get through oh hearken to the lovers in the spring time! Between the supermarket aisles while they're shopping these pretty city folk would chat without stopping vainly the birds are welcoming spring with their song they'll wear themselves out e'er very long while lads and lasses never tire of ringing! Then one day when Romeo must text his Julietta just to say I luv ya yeah I luv ya so much but then she rings back to tell him that it's all over she's met a nicer lad from Folkestone or Dover (It's all over it's all over lad from Dover) so he just rings to all of his pals and calls her a slag! and all the people on the tram hear the show while our pretty city folk live all on their mobile then suddenly the battery's flat as a skate and Romeo can not ring his mate he's sorry that he called her slag in spring time he can't ring her he can't ring his Julietta sorry now in spring.

Bambino dalle stelle (Child of the Stars )is a choral arrangement based on the traditional Italian Christmas carol Tu scendi dalla stelle (From Starry Skies Descending).Tu scendi dalla stelle is amongst the oldest of Christmas songs in Italy. The original version was written in the mid-1700s in Naples by the Catholic Bishop of Sant'Agata dei Goti, Alfonso Maria de’ Ligouri. At that time it was called Quanno nascette Ninno and was written in the Neapolitan dialect in the style of a pastorale.The song was later re-written in Italian by Pope Pius IX and thereafter it became famous as a Christmas carol all over the world.Originally containing seven verses, today’s performances of the carol in Italy generally include only the first two verses. Notable recordings and performances of the carol include those by Sergio Franchi, Andrea Bocelli and Luciano Pavarotti.This English language arrangement has been extended to four verses. Verse 1 and 2 are adaptations of the first two verses of the original; the third verse tells of the adoration of the shepherds and the wise men; and the fourth is based on some ideas inspired by the remaining verses of the original version.Instrumental accompanimentAvailable separately is an instrumental accompaniment scored for string quintet and glockenspiel. This is a 10-minute long piece that traces the history of the song We Shall Overcome, using narration and excerpts of ten versions of the song to educate about injustice and inspire hope. Its history is traced from its probable roots in slavery, to a Methodist hymn, through Pete Seeger, the Freedom Singers, and Joan Baez, and all the way to the present day. The piece ends with the performers and audience/congregation singing through the piece one last time, a capella, organically improvising harmonies. There are several opportunities for short solos, and one short a capella quartet section. .

The third movement, “As the stars that shall be bright as we are dust†compares the war dead to stars and constellations. They move “in marches upon the heavenly plainâ€. This song is about a married woman. Every step she takes, her husband supports her. She is enveloped in his world, and he is enveloped in her's. Suddenly, this man dies. She is overtaken by this lonely feeling. Her better half has just been stolen from her.  The word, Falling, is repeated to describe the fact that she knows that she is falling down a bottomless pit called her heart. The words, I can't hear a sound are said to describe that not only is she blinded by her grief but she is deafened as well. She cannot focus on the world around her because her grief consumes her. The words, I want to go home are spoken to describe that her husband was her home. She had her safety net ripped from underneath her and it will never come back. The words, I want to be free are spoken in unison with the entire choir to describe that everyone feels this way at least once in their life. They all have been thrown into a cell that some call the heart, and they've lost the key.  The last portion is the same as the beginning portion because the woman is remembering her husband in all of his glory. The last chord ends in major because she has had the epiphany that he lives on, within her memories.

I am not sure whether rollicking should be used to describe Christmas music but, if it is allowed, then it surely applies here. Written mainly as a piece for unison voices, variation can be made by using solos or men's / ladies' voices for the different verses. Following the final half of the last chorus, which has a very simple and effective descant, there is a short (2-bar) final section in S(divisi)ATB with an alternative setting for SAB. The organ accompaniment reflects the joyous feel of this traditional carol in 12/8 with a running counter-melody on the brighter stops over chords in the left hand - easier than it sounds, so good for the kudos of your organist. (It will also work well on a piano.) Used by the arranger as a final item in many Lessons & Carols services to great effect. Even the smallest of choirs will make a good impression with this.

Martin Rinkart was a deacon in Eisleben Germany where he served during the Thirty Years’ War. The city of Eisleben and Rinkart’s own home became a sanctuary for political refugees during the war. The resulting overcrowding in the walled city resulted in a horrible plague which hit its peak in 1637. Rinkart was the only surviving pastor in the city and before the plague was over he would preside over 4000 funerals include that of his own wife. Despite this, it was during this time that he wrote Now thank we all our God. This new setting of Now Thank We All Our God draws on Rinkart’s fierce spirit of optimism and faith in a time of desolation and despair. To paint the picture of the circumstances in which Rinkart wrote the hymn, this setting opens with the text from Psalm 13: How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever?The setting turns quickly, in an act of disruptive optimism and faith, to a lopsided dance of joy. In the end, the setting returns to the opening question of Psalm 13, How long? only to be answered by Rinkart’s declaration, Gifts of love today!
