Do You Hear How Many You Are? for SATB choir was written in April and May of 2010. The origins of this piece and text come from a very interesting experience I had in December of 2009. I have been learning a lot in the past few years about the state of our world and the many huge problems and crises we are faced with in the near future, and this discovery has been so daunting and overwhelming to me. So much change needs to happen in order for the near and long-term future of our world to be just and stable that I have felt a lot of guilt over my choice of profession. Why have I chosen to be a composer and musician when I could make more of an impact on solving these problems if I were a scientist or policy maker etc.? I have been struggling to find a solution to this dilemma for a while now and I just happened to be thinking about it, while filled with lots of stress and worries, one night as I was falling asleep in December of 2009. At the moment when I was in that state halfway between sleep and consciousness, I suddenly heard the line Do you hear how many you are? in my head, yet I felt as though I didn't come up with the line but that it was said TO me. I was instantly comforted, as if a load fell off my shoulders, and then I began to hear it being sung, which I knew was the beginning of a choral piece. I woke up, wrote down the music I was hearing (about the first six measures of the work) and then wrote down this entire poem. I truly feel that this message came to me for a reason, and that I need to share it through the music I create. Here the lyrics tells a love in a hard moment of life and every element is placed in a delicate balance where any change can be disruptive.Even trying to modify the music style would require an artist of the same weight, and I am not.So I tried to stay close to the original, using the most recognizable pattern of the song (the notes in sixteenth).Since we know that the vocal versions have to be shorter than the played ones (ears get bored before) and the original song if 4 minutes long, I cut the entire verse Ti porterò.... For those who want to play also the missing part, it’s easy: from bar 41 go back to bar 5, sing up to bar 18 (with the lyrics changed for the lead, Ti porterò..., other voices do not change) and then go ahead to bar 42 and from there to the end.

Based on one of only several poems written by my mother, Jewish Holocaust survivor Rita Hoffman of blessed memory (1927–2018), Only from Blood Does Freedom Grow echoes the words of Hatikvah (The Hope), the national anthem of Israel. I have to believe that she wrote this poem around 1948 because of how it is worded. I of course knew the source of inspiration for this poem when I reread it not long ago—something I had not done since the 1990s—but its having been inspired by Hatikvah was really driven home to me by a Facebook comment. That comment inspired me to compose a piece in which the opening and closing sections are based on the opening melody of Hatikvah, but in which the middle section is newly composed. “Israel was not created in order to disappear - Israel will endure and flourish. It is the child of hope and the home of the brave. It can neither be broken by adversity nor demoralized by success. It carries the shield of democracy, and it honors the sword of freedom.” —John F. Says the composer, Only in recent history has mankind been so fortunate as to have at its disposal a vehicle capable of traveling such great distances in a short period of time. All corners of the earth are now accessible to the common man. Yet, the voyage on these ‘flying machines’ is rarely the highlight of any trip. The use of irregular rhythms to convey the anxiety that so often underlies every aspect of air travel: the fear of missing the flight, the rush to the gate, the momentary calm after take-off that’s quickly interrupted by turbulence, and finally the vain search at the baggage claim.

GRACE DARLING was known as the ‘Heroine of the Farne Islands’ off the Northumberland coast where she lived with her family in the Longstone Lighthouse. She became a household name when in 1838 along with ther father William Darling rowed out in a North Sea gale to rescue 9 passengers from the capsized paddle steamer Forfarshire. Honoured by royalty, her fame was short-lived as she died of Tuberculosis in 1842 aged only 27. A setting of the ancient Epiphany hymn Illuminans Altissime by St. Ambrose of Milan, From the collection, Five Ambrosian Hymns. Suitable for schools, churches, or for modern performance choirs, this music is based on the hymn written in the 4th Century by St. Ambrose of Milan. The original tune most likely sounded like what we would consider to be chant, but in a style that was specific to Ambrose, and came to be known as Milanese or Ambrosian in style. This is a meditative reflection of our own journey as we follow our own paths toward enlightenment. In recasting the hymn as a performance work I wanted to portray both the figurative and literal aspects of the imagery of light by using regular rhythmic patterns within accompaniment voices. In this way I hoped to illustrate the regular pattern of prayer that could lead individuals to Christ’s illumination. There are also important moments with harmonies that feature seconds, resulting in soft, almost clashing pitches that twinkle or shimmer like stars in the sky. .
