You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth - Choral Arrangement for SATB and Piano by Michael Thomas Coull.You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth (also known as You Took the Words Right Out of My Mouth (Hot Summer Night)) is the first solo single by the American singer Meat Loaf, released in 1977.  It is a track from his album Bat Out of Hell, written by Jim Steinman. According to his autobiography, Meat Loaf asked Jim Steinman to write a song that was not 15 or 20 minutes long, and, in Meat Loaf’s words, a ‘pop song’.  His autobiography also dates the writing of the song to 1975, the song reportedly being a key factor in Meat Loaf and Steinman deciding to do an album together.  The song was the first single released from the album, with an edit of For Crying Out Loud as the B-side.  The record peaked at No. 73 in the Record World singles chart, and didn't appear at all in Billboard Hot 100.  Billboard reviewed the single, finding the guitar introduction to be energetic, the beat to be ‘catchy’ and the vocal performance to be somewhat similar to Bruce Springsteen.  Billboard also commented on how occasional pauses in the instruments allow the ‘infectious’ vocals to be highlighted.   Following the success of the next two singles, Two Out of Three Ain't Bad and Paradise by the Dashboard Light, the song was re-released in October 1978 with Paradise as the B-side.  This issue peaked at No. 39 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, over a year after the first release of the song.This exciting and energetic choral arrangement is voiced for full SATB choir with piano accompaniment, and will lend a touch of contemporary pop/rock to your next concert.Also available for SSAA.

In the hands of a skilled vocal percussionist, the propulsive rhythm of Bad Case thumps alongside the bass; thus laying the groundwork for your soloist and setting the electric tone for the entire song. This collection presents its user with a series of increasingly difficult rhythms on a single pitch. The rhythmic material in this series is organized into 10 difficulty levels. Each difficulty level contains four exercises in each of the following time signatures: 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 6/8, 9/8, and 12/8. This gives exercises in 2, 3, and 4 beats per bar in both simple and compound meters. The first two exercises of each time signature have no ties while the remaining two exercises in each time signature include ties. In Book 1 of this series you’ll find difficulty levels 1 to 5, while Book 2 completes the set with levels 6 to 10. The exercises in this collection are intentionally random and difficult to internalize. They don’t follow any predictable or standard groove pattern, but instead are random successions of eighth- and sixteenth-note groupings within the prescribed difficulty level. In keeping the rhythmic material as unpredictable as possible the door is left open for the materials to be used in conjunction with any number of exercises, while forcing the user to process every rhythm as its own event without relying on pattern recognition to help in identifying the rhythms. To curate the difficulty of rhythm in as objective a way as possible I looked at all of the possible eighth-note and sixteenth-note groupings within the basic unit of one beat. Each difficulty level builds on the exercises of the previous by adding groupings that are slightly more conceptually challenging. Difficulty Level 9 contains all possible groupings, while Level 10 focuses on the more challenging groupings by omitting easy ones. Some suggestions for how to use this book include: Practice sight-reading. When doing so it is encouraged to cycle through the exercises quickly rather than dwelling on a particular exercise for a long period of time. The goal in practising sight-reading is not to learn the material but to develop the skill of reading new material. Use a metronome! The most important thing you can do with this material is learn how to read these rhythms and play them in time. Advanced metronome work: Place the metronome click on weak beats. With the metronome clicking only on the beat you run the risk of relying on the metronome to give you the time. Placing the metronome click on non-strong beats forces you to take responsibility for the time. For example, instead of putting the metronome click on each quarter-note in 4/4, play the exercise with the metronome giving the second eighth note of each beat, or the last sixteenth note, or beats 2 and 4, or only the downbeat of each bar. Be creative with this one! The possibilities are limitless. Develop independence between hands by playing a repeating pattern in one hand while reading an exercise in the other. Expand on this by adding patterns in hands and feet while reading a rhythm with a remaining limb. This is a great exercise for drummers and percussionists but any instrumentalist could benefit from coordination practice. Use these rhythms to practice scales. Instead of playing scales in straight sixteenth-notes, try playing them in the rhythms given in these exercises. Write in sticking patterns, dynamics, accents, phrase marks, or other articulations for you or your students to practice. If you’re not happy with the ties I included, feel free to add some of your own. Combine the above exercises in any way that you think will be beneficial to your practice. As with any of the Dots and Beams books, the uses for this particular collection are limited only by the imagination of the musician using it. I encourage anybody using this book to find as many uses for these exerci.

I was tasked to think about what songs my grandparents sang to me. Que Sera, Sera, although not a folksong, was the first that came to mind. My maternal grandmother had sung this to me in my younger days. Not long after, my grandmother announced that she intended to sell her house - the very house that I spent most of my growing-up years in. This was followed by many weeks of packing her belongings, uncovering forgotten treasures, and recalling the days of my childhood. Quite aptly, arranging this piece gave me an avenue to express my sentimental thoughts, and say goodbye to an old house filled with so many memories. I hope that both the performer and the listener can be transported back in time, even if just for a few minutes, to reminisce the happier and more carefree days of our lives. Furthermore, let us count our blessings in the present, as the future’s not ours to see. Que Sera, Sera. Crystal Veil Suite was composed in 2018 for REVEL, an Austin, Texas based classical music group led by Dr. Carla McElhaney, and for Chorus Austin, also of Austin, Texas, Ryan Heller, Artistic Director. The premiere of the piece took place on December 1, 2018, at the Existential Solstice concert, part of REVEL's Radio Project concert series. The Existential Solstice concert, a collaboration between REVEL and Chorus Austin, featured music and poetry meant to elicit vivid imagery of winter scenes. As a lifelong Texan, this required a stretching of my creativity, as you well might imagine. The A section of the first movement, The Snow, was written in Phyrigian mode to evoke the melancholy mood that may accompany a long winter, with descending patterns in the viola and the right hand of the piano painting a gentle snowfall. The B section contrasts with a faster tempo, suggesting an intensification of the snowfall, before returning to the melancholic A section. The second movement, Frost and Wind, paints a snowstorm with its faster tempo, swirling winds in the right hand of the piano and in the choir, and bitter frost evinced in all voices. Finally, in the third movement, Snow, a shift to the major mode and tranquil melodic lines suggests a return to a gentle snowfall following the storm, with contemplative motives in all voices, until a lone robin's voice and sunlight bring us hope of spring's return.

Commissioned for the Combined Choirs of St. Joseph's School, Seattle, directed by Rick Boyle, who premiered the piece at Benaroya Hall's Nordstrom Recital Hall on May 6, 2004, in the second annual New Works New Hope concert for the benefit of Gilda's Club Seattle. The piece was revised in 2007 and the premiere of the revised score was given on November 16, 2007, by the Queens College Chorus, Cindy Bell conducting, at the Aaron Copland School of Music in New York. It was selected by the Portland Vocal Consort for their 2013 Best of the Northwest program. Duration ca. 6 minutes. Conductor Cindy Bell says, Driven by a refreshing text of American naturalist John Muir, Bartholomew has created an accessible work that flows easily through both key and meter changes, and features expressive, lyric melodies contrasted by exciting rhythmic drive. Song of the Mountains is almost cantata-like, or through-composed, in that each line of Muir's text receives equal and interesting interpretation. Occasional use of the triplet rhythm creates both a relaxing effect (grasses cease waving) and driving sense of forward motion (Vibrating!). Effective use of dynamics and interweaving of choral parts make for each section having a musical life of its own. The music is composed by Carl M. Steubing and the words are from a poem written by Carl’s good friend Miles J. Martin.  The opening lyrics, “Who is that manâ€, refers to an older Asian gentleman Miles encountered during vacation in the Far East. They were strangers that could not communicate, but when their eyes met they smiled at each other, and Miles recognized the man as his brother.  Shortly thereafter Miles sat down and wrote the poem called “Brothersâ€. Carl M. Steubing wrote the music, and it was published in 1967. This song was very relevant back in 1967 but has even more significance today. Brothers (and sisters) around the world are looking to belong in our chaotic world. They are searching for more connections, more empathy, and more love for each other.  No matter where you are from, the color of your skin, the faith you follow, or the person you choose to love, may we all find a way to look into each other’s eyes, smile and see in each other our brother or sister.

One of the most loved Christmas tunes made famous by the ultimate crooner, Bing Crosby, I'll Be Home For Christmas resonates with me every year as I have been living in the UK since 2012. It speaks of the desire to return home for the special time of year to share in the celebration with family and friends. But in a small twist, the last line of the song is if only in my dreams, leaving us to consider those around the world who are displaced from their loved ones.This arrangement is in a simple ballad style and features the melody in the soprano and tenor voices. The harmony is chromatic in parts, but with good voice leading to assist with the learning of this jazz-infused tune. The bass part mainly anchors down the harmony, with a dm consonant aiming to recreate a jazz double bass sound. Soft consonants and sweet do sounds will ensure a smooth ballad style. Ranges are within a standard choir set, so this should be performable by most community choirs with basic reading ability. Beautifully laid out in A4 size, the score and parts are easy to read and available NOW for digital download. Duration ca. 3'15.Published in December 1920 in Harper's Magazine and again in 1923 in his Pulitzer Prize−winning book New Hampshire, Fire and Ice is one of Robert Frost's most popular poems. Some have asserted that the poem is a compression of Dante's Inferno. In an anecdote he recounted in 1960, prominent astronomer Harlow Shapley claimed to have inspired Fire and Ice in an encounter with Frost a year before the poem was published. Frost asked Shapley how the world will end, and Shapley responded that either the sun will explode and incinerate the Earth, or the Earth will somehow escape this fate only to end up slowly freezing in deep space. This is a beautiful rendition of the familiar chant, keeping the intent of early chant and choral sound, but within a more contemporary harmonic palette. It begins simply and ends in a very uplifting, positive manner, with several transpositions along the way. However, the feeling of plainchant is always present in each variation as they evolve. This is the first of what I hope to be a collection of hymn arrangements for choir that follow the Christian Church Year, this one being Advent season. Of course it can be sung anytime that fits the situation, but I used the United Methodist Hymnal suggestion for an Advent hymn. The piano simulates bells and chimes, and the voices sometimes do also. A very uplifting arrangement, while not so difficult as to discourage choirs. It employs the concept of canon and contemporary harmonies. I hope you and your choir or choral organization enjoy it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

Published by stanleymhoffman.com (A0.1487909). Composer’s Notes Anim Zemiros was composed in 1985 while I was a doctoral student of Martin Boykan at Brandeis University. The initial fugal theme was inspired by the melody from the third movement of Beethoven's Quartet in A Minor, Op. 132, also known as Heiliger Dankgesang. My theme resembles Beethoven's melody in two ways: it aurally approximates the rhythms of his theme and it also takes the contour of Beethoven's melody and inverts it, also in an approximated way. This is where the similarities to Beethoven's theme end, forAnim Zemiros is most certainly not composed in the Lydian mode! Rather, it is composed in a chromatically saturated musical language. Although Anim Zemiros may be used for the Jewish Musaf Sabbath Service, it was conceived as a concert piece. In the synagogue, this hymn is sung responsively by the cantor and congregation. The responsive nature of this hymn is what inspired the use of contrapuntal passages alternating with homophonic ones. Anim Zemiros begins with a statement of the initial fugal theme in the basses followed by a response at the interval of a fifth in the altos during which the basses present the counter theme. After a brief episode, the same thing happens in the tenor and soprano voices while the basses and altos present new contrapuntal melodies. A brief, contrasting, calm homophonic chorale passage ensues (a textural foreshadowing of both the loud climax and the hushed closing of the piece). This is followed by an extended development section (like ones from sonata-allegro movements) in which ideas from both the contrapuntal and homophonic sections are fragmented and stratified. Shifting time signatures provide added momentum to this music that leads to the homophonic climax that follows. Next comes an “anti-fugue” in which the initial fugal theme is presented backwards, as is the fugal form itself, moving from four voices, to three and finally to two. However, rather than moving to one voice as at the opening of the piece (which would have been a very predictable thing to do), the piece ends with a reminiscence of the calm homophonic chorale. Ashkenazic pronunciation was chosen over Sephardic for two reasons. I wished to have the s sound on the Hebrew letter sov rather than the t sound. In addition, Ashkenazic pronunciation is considered to be somewhat archaic since Sephardic is used in modern Hebrew. I felt this gave me artistic license to compose vocal lines containing correct or incorrect syllabic stress for purely musical effect.
