These simple folksong arrangements were made for two community choirs based in Selly Oak, Birmingham, but they would be equally suitable for school choirs or other groups. Included are well known songs from England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland, which are woven into a continuous piece lasting about 6' 45. The medley starts with the English song, ‘Early one morning’, one verse of which re-appears at the end to round things off. The tradition of singing folk songs in schools and in the community has very much faded away in the UK, but the four songs selected for this medley are likely to be well known and loved by many of the older generation!The simple harmonies range from three to four parts (SAB/SATB), with some unison sections as well.

Moore, himself a singer and accomplished musician, is now best remembered for the lyrics of “The Minstrel Boy” and “The Last Rose of Summer.” His poem “At the Mid Hour of Night” is about love, loss and belief in the afterlife as a place where love persists. The suggested ‘tune’ for this poem is the harp air: O! Molly Dear AKA Molly My Dear an Irish air and fiddle tune. This 2024 setting of Moore’s masterpiece is scored for 4-part SATB ensemble to be performed a cappella. Performance time: 2:55+.

Missa Solemnis in B major, op. 27, vocal score and piano part (for rehearsal purposes only). Based on its Neo-classical style, this setting of the Roman Catholic mass text could possibly work as a festive mass (missa solemnis) with trumpets and timpani, and its duration would fit such a solemn service. However, its intense and sometimes dramatic treatment and universal addressability due to its well-known and rather concentrated text, yet also due to eliminating the „Filioque†(which would still fit the rhythm of the repeated „qui ex Patreâ€, should any Catholics ever wish to perform this as a mass) make it rather a „liturgical oratorio for all nationsâ€, more appropriate in the concert hall. The work has had a long gestation: imagined in 1984 after the composer’s first contact with Beethoven’s masterpiece, then sketched first in 1987-1989, and many of its themes date back from those years. Its working out is quite polyphonic, discretely modal and cyclical, and also full of centuries-old musical symbols traditionally associated with the setting of the mass text: e.g. unisons for the more dogmatical parts, Baroque dotted rhythms at the Nativity (the first coming of the  King of Kings), „rex caelestis†and also at his Passion (whose setting is discretely inspired by folkloric Romanian laments), the „anabasis†gesture at „Gloria in excelsis Deoâ€, „et ascendit in caelisâ€, „in remissionem peccatorum†and the resurrection, a flute trill standing for the Holy Spirit who has come ’like a dove’ at „et incarnatus estâ€, a cross-shaped texture at „crucifixusâ€, and some word-painting (hushed sonorities at „et invisibiliumâ€, anticipations between orchestra and chorus at „et exspecto†etc.). Moreover, certain symbolic roles are assigned to the instrumental groups when alone (the organ represents God the Father and transcendence, the winds and/or solo voices represent God the Son and humanity, and the strings represent the Holy Spirit). „Kyrie†is restrained and soft, besides the powerful chords opening the respective sections of its tripartite, simple structure, and it leans towards Palestrina’s serene modality and counterpoint. „Gloria†begins with a colorful orchestral introduction depicting discretely the shepherds who kept watch over their flocks right before the Nativity, and then gradually the bright revelation. „Credo†has an orchestral introduction as well, but powerful, recurring and based on the beginning of the plainchant hymn „Pange linguaâ€, made famous by Mozart’s last symphony and by other Classical composers. Both „Gloria†and „Credo†end with extended, powerful and elaborate fugues („in gloria Dei Patris†and „et vitam venturi saeculiâ€, respectively) with dramatic modulations and sometimes with enthusiastic syncopations at odds with the words’ accents, a la Stravinsky. The same sections plus „Agnus Dei†end with soft quartal harmonies suggesting transcendent appeasement (similar harmonies appear powerfully at the beginning of „Sanctusâ€). „Judicare†quotes the beginning of the well-known „Dies irae†plainchant tune, and the Consecration between the „Sanctus†and „Benedictus†sections is represented by a contemplative prelude for solo organ, quoting Lutheran chorales, too. Another long orchestral introduction, suggesting the Last Judgment and based on traditional Byzantine hymns, opens „Agnus Deiâ€, which includes another quotation (the famous ’Dresden Amen’ at „qui tollis peccata mundi†and „dona nobis pacemâ€). In the final section, with its refined simplicity, the choral voices enter in descending order, and the „Kyrie eleison†theme is briefly remembered, then it ends softly and peacefully. Total duration: 50 min. A small, simple, and sensitive work for a capella SATB choir, The First Witnesses explores the birth of Jesus from the perspective of the animals present in the stable in Bethlehem. Each verse presents Jesus as both newborn baby and Lord of all creation, including the very animals who were the first witnesses to his birth. This piece was premiered by the Chamber Choir of Stillwater Christian School in December of 2016, a mere three weeks after its composition. Hunter says of the piece: It was presented to the choir as a 'read through' piece in rehearsal, but instantly became a favorite and was added to our concert program at the last minute. It has since become a staple of our Christmas literature, and has consistently been a Christmas favorite for both our choirs and our audiences. Easy to learn, fun to sing, and celebrating a childlike imagination of the first Christmas, The First Witnesses is a true singer's song, which makes it enjoyable to rehearse and perform. The simple, pentatonic melody lends the piece a folk flavor, and the men and women both get chances to shine in their respective soli sections. A beautiful ooh refrain ends each verse, including the last.

The Old Palmer Song is a favourite Australian folk song that is meant to be sung in a rollicking style that reflects the excitement and anticipation of hardy Australian colonials setting out in search of gold. Following hard on the heels of the great California gold rushes (1848 – 1855) came the discovery of payable quantities of gold in Australia. The first gold rush in Australia began in New South Wales in May 1851 after prospector Edward Hargraves discovered gold near Orange, at a site he called Ophir. Other discoveries quickly followed, including those at Ballarat and Bendigo in the colony of Victoria. Then came Rosewood and Gympie (1867) in Queensland; the Gawler region in South Australia in 1868; and Halls Creek (1885), Kalgoorlie and Coolgardie (1893) in Western Australia. One of Australia’s richest alluvial goldfields was that of the Palmer River in far north Queensland. The rush to the Palmer began in 1873 and lasted for about three years. The goldfields were nearly 100 miles inland from the small coastal settlement of Cooktown and the early prospectors had a hard time of it just getting to the field. Leaving Cooktown they crossed the coastal mangroves, then on through dense tropical rainforest, into the more open eucalypt forest beyond and then across the dry, inhospitable and rugged country of the hinterland dissected by wide and deep rivers. And always there was the risk of meeting with fierce resistance from the Aborigines whose tribal land they were travelling through. At the height of the rush there were around 35,000 prospectors on the Palmer (including a great many Chinese). By the time the rush was over, the Palmer had yielded over 100 tons of gold! The Old Palmer Song is set to the tune of Ten Thousand Miles Away, a shore ballad/sea shanty that probably originated in Ireland in the early 19th Century.

In 410, he was popularly chosen as Bishop of Ptolemais, a position he reluctantly accepted, as his views on certain beliefs of the church, including the soul's creation, a literal resurrection, and the end of the world (eschatos) were unorthodox. In the last of 10 odes Synesius authored, he describes himself bowing humbly in the presence of Christ. BYZANTINE HYMN: TI IPERMAHO (To the defender army leader) arranged for SATB choir and pianoDuring a siege of Constantinople in the 6th cent., and while the regular army was engaged in fighting elsewhere, the city was attacked by Avars. The women, children and seniors left there fought as best they could, but finally realized that they had to give up. As a last resort, they carried the icon of Panayia (St. Mary, always referred to as all-holy in Greek), alongside the city walls, something that produced an unexpected effect: The besiegers left! For three days the citizens participated in liturgies addressed to Her, in a hymn called AKATHISTOS YMNOS (=Non-sitting Hymn), where this tropation is central, as it is most actively still used in the Greek Orthodox Church at many other relevant services. The first part is the original, in unison, or sung by a soloist. Tribute to the Trail of Tears is an original SATB choir song commemorating my Choctaw heritage. When I wrote this song, I wanted to look at the Trail of Tears from the Choctaws' eyes. I did this by emphasizing the contrast between their anger with the shouting taken from a Choctaw war chant and hope with a Choctaw Sun Prayer (the sun is an important figure of hope in Choctaw spirituality), their English traditions forced upon them and their true Choctaw nature, and the betrayal of a government that was supposed to protect them. This song is designed to be slow and relaxed (~70bpm for the first part and ~85bpm for the piu mosso), with the bends representing relaxed glissandos in the voice. The last three chords are meant to be sensitive and should be taken very slowly. Keep in mind that this piece should not only be meaningful but convey the emotions to spread the Native awareness that is so direly needed in America.
