Published by David Baldwin (A0.1319175). Eventide is powerfully narrative in style: a yearning and intimate prayer that our Shepherd would be near in the night (symbolic of difficult times). The piece uses M.L. Hofford's lyrics, which he penned in response to the human cost of war. On a personal level, Hofford's lyrics struck me as especially comforting after an unusually sobering death in the community. The verses are decidedly minimalist and have a chant-like beauty to them, so as to emphasize pondering. The refrains fill out in texture (up to 7 parts) as the prayer shifts to beckoning.1. Abide with me; 'tis eventide. The day is past and gone; the shadows of the evening fall; the night is coming on. Within my home a welcome guest, within my home abide.2. Abide with me, 'tis eventide. Thy walk today with me has made my heart within me burn as I communed with thee. Thy earnest words have filled my soul and kept me near thy side.3. Abide with me, 'tis eventide. And lone will be the night if I cannot commune with thee, nor find in thee my light. Based on one of only several poems written by my mother, Jewish Holocaust survivor Rita Hoffman of blessed memory (1927–2018), Only from Blood Does Freedom Grow echoes the words of Hatikvah (The Hope), the national anthem of Israel. I have to believe that she wrote this poem around 1948 because of how it is worded. I of course knew the source of inspiration for this poem when I reread it not long ago—something I had not done since the 1990s—but its having been inspired by Hatikvah was really driven home to me by a Facebook comment. That comment inspired me to compose a piece in which the opening and closing sections are based on the opening melody of Hatikvah, but in which the middle section is newly composed. “Israel was not created in order to disappear - Israel will endure and flourish. It is the child of hope and the home of the brave. It can neither be broken by adversity nor demoralized by success. It carries the shield of democracy, and it honors the sword of freedom.” —John F. For a long time, I felt there was an a cappella choral piece hiding within it, in plain sight. One day I got inspired and gave it a try. Creating a choral adaptation of a piano piece has its challenges. I tried to keep faithful to Satie's original musical inspiration and created lyrics to go with my arrangement that evoke an early summer morning, one of my favourite times of the year. Several months later, I applied to be a participant at one of the Vancouver Chamber Choir's Interplay workshops funded by the SOCAN Foundation and to my delight I was accepted. As dawn breaks was one of the pieces that this amazing choir sight read for me on the spot. VCC director Jon Washburn and choir members then provided me with valuable feedback, for which I am very grateful. NB: One day I woke up to the realization that I had independently written four choral works, each of which had evoked a different season, and so it seemed natural to group them together into a choral suite that I have called The Ottawa Four Seasons Suite. As dawn breaks works perfectly as the opening number of this suite. Finally, my instruction to choirs is to sing as if in a painting, and indeed I invite any artists who might draw inspiration from this piece to consider creating a companion work of art to accompany it.

A vivid and at times raucous celebration of Saturnalia, in Latin, for an ensemble of voices and instruments (including various percussion, woodwind and brass instruments). The sound sample is a sung performance by the composer with an electronic preview of the instruments. Further explanations: Song for Saturnalia - a raucous and fun romp - in whole tones (since there is scant evidence of the types of scales used in those days - whole tones just seem to work in this context). The Latin words make references to relatively modern times but the spirit of Saturnalia is timeless, after all. The pileum (also written pilleum) is the little cap that slave wore during Saturnalia to show they were free men and women on that day - they would point to their cap and say libertus sum (I am a free person) and omnes aequales sumus (we are all equal). The words (and translation - both by me) are as follows: Saturnalia Song Io Saturnalia! Hodie igitur dominus noster non es. [Hooray, it’s Saturnalia, so today you’re not our boss] Hodie omnes aequales sumus. Io! Campestrius is based on campester - a plain or place of clear ground (Blair is the Celtic equivalent word - a forest clearing!) Candelarius is based on candela - a taper or candle - ie something burning hence Brandt (yes, I know he’s earlier than the other two politicians, but, hey, it’s all a bit of anachronistic fun!)].

El Malei Rachamim (God full of compassion) is a Jewish prayer for the departed that is recited at funeral services, on visiting the graves of relatives (especially during the holy month of Elul), and after having been called up to the reading of the Torah on the anniversary of the death of a close relative. The prayer originated in the Jewish communities of Western and Eastern Europe and since the end of the Holocaust, the prayer has been adapted as a memorial prayer for the victims of the Holocaust and Nazi persecution. The full text (which has been freely adapted in this piece): O God, Who art full of compassion, who dwellest on high, grant perfect rest in Thy Divine Presence to all the souls of our holy and pure brethren whose blood was spilt by the murderers in Auschwitz, Belzec, Bergen Belsen, Dachau, Majdanek, Sobibor, Treblinka and other extermination camps in Europe; who were killed, strangled, burned and buried alive for the sanctification for Thy Name. For whose souls we now pray. May their resting place be in the Garden of Eden, may the Master of Mercy shelter them in the shadow of His wings for eternity; and may he bind their souls in the Bond of Live. HASHEM is their heritage, and may they repose in peace in their resting places.
