Published by Michael D. McClish (A0.940840). This is a more contemporary choral arrangement of the familiar hymn, with a new melody that ties the arrangement together. It progresses from traditional harmony to more a more contemporary choral treatment, while still retaining the original feel of the hymn. This would be for a intermediate level church choir, and could be ready for a service in one rehearsal. The solo instrument could be solo violin or Bb clarinet, both fit the melody beautifully. This is one of a series of hymn arrangements I am writing that follow the church year, this one would be a New Year's hymn, but of course could be sung anytime. It is around three minutes, perfect for a typical service.

This is a beautiful rendition of the familiar chant, keeping the intent of early chant and choral sound, but within a more contemporary harmonic palette. It begins simply and ends in a very uplifting, positive manner, with several transpositions along the way. However, the feeling of plainchant is always present in each variation as they evolve. This is the first of what I hope to be a collection of hymn arrangements for choir that follow the Christian Church Year, this one being Advent season. Of course it can be sung anytime that fits the situation, but I used the United Methodist Hymnal suggestion for an Advent hymn. The piano simulates bells and chimes, and the voices sometimes do also. A very uplifting arrangement, while not so difficult as to discourage choirs. It employs the concept of canon and contemporary harmonies. I hope you and your choir or choral organization enjoy it as much as I enjoyed writing it.

The text for Not but a Seed…, which was written by the composer, follows the growth of tree from a single seed, through its existence as a full-grown member of the forest around it. In the mind of the author/composer, this growth exists as a metaphor for two of the most important elements of life, family and the process of artistic creation. In each, the tiniest of particles is created from elements that it is initially unaware of. Over time, these tiny elements grow to become able to foster creation of their own, ultimately connecting into a single unending web. Musically, this concept is dealt with during the course of the piece, where the opening chord is used as a catalyst for melodic and harmonic expansion throughout. This sonority is also used at important goal points throughout the setting of the three–stanza text. The piece is set for SATB choir, with each section occasionally splitting by half. The work includes rich harmonies throughout, as well as melodic moments for each voice part to shine through. The clear linear progress of each voice, combined with the recurring sonorities mentioned above make this piece a rewarding and accessible musical undertaking. A rehearsal piano reduction is included in the vocal score.

Published by Nicholas D Palmer (A0.782804). In my heart, I know that my redeemer lives is a setting of the funeral sentence from the Anglican and Episcopal Prayer Books. The piece is suitable for funerals, but also for the Easter season, any occasions of memorial, or Sundays with readings about eternal life, resurrection, trust in God's goodness, or triumph over persecution. This motet is scored for a cappella voices, with men and boys choirs in mind, but, of course, usable with any treble choir, or SATTBB ensemble. The harmonies are lush, and for the most part, the piece is homophonic. See the SATB version with optional divisi for a simpler arrangement. Listen to the audio file to get an idea of the pace and sound of the piece.

Gaudete for SATB choir and pianoThis Christmas Carol first appeared in print in a Finnish publication of 1582 entitled Piæ Cantiones Ecclesiasticæ et Scholasticæ Veterum Episcoporum. The æolian modal polyphony and Medieval Latin text suggest a much earlier date of composition originating from central Europe; the plainsong melody of the verses is derived from liturgical sources of the same period and was not included in the original document.This new arrangement of Gaudete is based closely on the original music and text. However, the original key of G minor has been transposed to D minor to create more variety in the voicing, yet remaining faithful to the original vocal parts.The piano accompaniment in the refrain is simply an amalgamation of the voices and therefore, in order to create a pure a cappella sound in performance, the piano part may be omitted and used solely for rehearsal purposes. As the verses were originally sung unaccompanied, the piano part in this arrangement has been devised to compliment the plainsong melody, but of course may be omitted in performance if preferred.Originally, each verse would probably have been sung by a solo tenor voice. However, in this arrangement, each of the four verses has been allocated to a different soloist. Using the standard ICET English texts, both motets serve many liturgical functions but of course may be sung at other times as well. If performed in a concert, these motets may be performed individually or as a set since both are in F major. Using the standard English ICET texts, both motets serve many liturgical functions but of course may be sung at other times as well. If performed in a concert, these motets may be performed individually or as a set since both are in F major. There are four key changes throughout the duration of the song, and is composed of 11 parts.With the parts, the choir will have to stagger breathe throughout the piece. The violin that's an octave up, put that back down the octave, and change the harp to a piano, or violin and cello respectively. Sorry for the inconvenience, but now that I've learnt more about the harp, I'm making a proper, separate composition. Due to the level of intensity, I advise against beginner students, but may be played with as a starting or finale experienced personnel- these are just suggestions, of course, though. The piece is also very lengthy- at a time approximate of 10 minutes, and so should be performed as a starting or finale piece, but again, at your disposal. As are the dynamics, make the piece your own.

The sound sample is a sung performance by the composer with an electronic preview of the instruments. Further explanations: Song for Saturnalia - a raucous and fun romp - in whole tones (since there is scant evidence of the types of scales used in those days - whole tones just seem to work in this context). The Latin words make references to relatively modern times but the spirit of Saturnalia is timeless, after all. The pileum (also written pilleum) is the little cap that slave wore during Saturnalia to show they were free men and women on that day - they would point to their cap and say libertus sum (I am a free person) and omnes aequales sumus (we are all equal). I began playing it unattached to any tune and I just liked the way the line descended in the left hand and how I had to find voicings in the right hand that made harmonic sense – like a puzzle. As I was playing around with this puzzle, thoughts of my father were swirling around in my head – I was at the end of a 4 year period of separation from my parents owing to the fact that I’m a Canadian expat living in the US and the borders were closed for a long time because of Covid, and then I had work visa issues and my parents were getting older before my eyes. They were also losing friends to cancer and other ailments and my dad, in particular, had experienced the loss of many close family members and friends during our separation and it was taking a toll. One day I sat down and played the now familiar-to-me ostinato but randomly I started to sing “Beyond the Sea†over it and it fit perfectly. I thought it a happy coincidence. As the days went on I committed to putting my ostinato with Beyond the Sea and the lyrics started to seep into my brain. I have, of course, heard these lyrics many times before, (who hasn’t seen Finding Nemo?) but the lyrics didn’t mean what I thought they meant… They’re NOT about the ocean, they are about my dad!!! Well, kind of… I realized, through careful reflection and by slowing the words down, that the lyrics are talking about a person in heaven who is patiently waiting for their partner to join them. Somewhere beyond the seaShe’s there watching for me…It’s far beyond the starsIt’s near beyond the moon And the lyrics end with them meeting, “We’ll meet beyond the shore, we’ll kiss just like before,†and the song ends with: “and never again I’ll go sailing.†It’s like the big bang went off in my head about why all these thoughts of my dad, and his friends, and this arrangement, and what it all meant suddenly just MADE SENSE and I was able to start formulating a plan. Performance Suggestions: The improvisation solo in the middle should be free of any traditional “scat syllables†and should be more of a lament. Listen to singers like Aubrey Johnson improvise on ballads for inspiration. An idea for that improv section might be to have a male singer start the improv, then a female singer joins (as if together in heaven) then they sing letter F together (warning: will cause tears…). All solo sections do not have to be sung as written – soloists can take liberties with the melody as the spirit moves.

The title Three Sacred Songs: was given to these pieces rather than the more usual terms anthem or motet because of the strongly secular presence in the texts. The songs were written over a period of some eighteen months. The Shepherd Lad was finished on February 29, 2008. The Round Day and Magdalene’s Song were completed in Brooklyn on June 11, 2009, the music having been originally sketched-out on Christmas Day and Boxing Day 2008, at Putnam Valley, New York. In the first song, The Round Day, the singer hears the voice of the Blessed Virgin Mary as she sings to the glory of God throughout the day. The text was written on June 7, 2008. In The Shepherd Lad, the Spanish mystic Saint John of the Cross describes a shepherd lad’s (Jesus’s) love for a shepherdess (the Church) and how another (the Devil) tempted his love away. Heartbroken, the shepherd climbed a tree, “And threw wide his arms in sweetest charity, Since by His Shepherdess He was forsaken.†The original Spanish text was translated and adapted into Villanelle form by the composer in early December 2004. The text of Magdalene’s Song describes the feelings of a mystic, or a devotee of Jesus, inspired by the fresh beauty, grace and power of the Lord of creation. The main body of the text is given to a soprano solo. The text was written on April 27, 2008. These sacred songs were conceived as being performed either as a set or individually. The composer had secular ensembles in mind, such as college or concert choruses, but these songs may, of course, also be performed in a liturgical setting. The accompanying flute provides introductions, interludes and codas throughout the set and, on a few occasions, plays with the voices. The piano part is ad lib. (optional).

This setting for Christmas represents the cold of a Northern winter (the cruel wind blows) although of course the actual events took place in rather warmer climes. It also reflects much of the liturgical and popular symbolism of the Christmas season: robins, holly etc and it brings our thoughts towards the season of Easter with the blood of Good Friday. A robin brought some holly all covered with snow. The cruel wind blows. From each little berry fell drops of blood, Which covered the earth where the Virgin once stood. The cruel wind blows. Dark was the sky when Angels came to stay, They brought old lanterns to lead the way. The cruel wind blows. Candles brightly shine for all to see, They glow tonight through the ageing year. Tender are the lilies as soft as her gown And white are the ringlets that fall to the ground. Mary with her child upon this Winter night, She walked through the darkness with yellow candle light. North winds blow across the fields, But only one child continues to dream. It all began with the idea one morning that the other tune for Nahum Tate's carol While shepherds watched is, of course, the Yorkshire ditty On Ilkley moor bar t'hat. Well, as the afternoon progressed, other tunes got added, resulting in a curious potpourri for choir and piano. The choir gets to sing On Ilkla Moor, the Este psalter tune known to all, and also Auld Lang Syne. The second voice, in its madrigalian way, gets a sly English cadence!. Meanwhile, the piano gets some sly references to Sing a song of sixpence and Scotland the brave. We follow her as she moves from page to page trying to find a way back home, assisted by the ‘Scarecrow’ plus an odd assortment of picture book characters. A great fun-musical for all of the family with plenty laughs and a few screams along with foot-tapping songs. It can be performed by any mixed age group age from 12 - 60.
