You have almost no power to affect any change in your life other than the biological ones that are happening to you daily. You've been feeling strange lately, nauseous in the mornings. You're soon to be married to an older man you barely know. Your cousin Elizabeth is pregnant and you are on your way to visit her. As you walk, you silently meditate on your current state of affairs, absentmindedly chanting a prayer you've heard since birth.Suddenly, a bright light and strange being appear, the being greets you and gives you the most bizarre news anyone has ever heard. After your initial shock, you can't help but praise God.Nunc dimittis: An old man is at the temple in Jerusalem. Year after year, day after day, hour after hour he has longed for deliverance from Roman oppression and the coming of Messiah. On this day, as he trudges along, he encounters a young girl, an older man and a baby. Not unusual, but something about the child catches his eye and draws him to the family. As he stands staring at the child, suddenly he knows. He knows! This is the One he has been waiting for. The long wait is over. The search is ended. He takes the baby from the mother and holds him close. He feels not elation as much as relief. He can now rest in peace.

Pax e concordia means peace from harmony. The piece combines the texts Dona nobis pacem, Shalom chaverim, and Salaam aleykum. All of these texts, from three major world religions, speak of peace and are combined here in a prayer for peace delivered through music. This work was inspired by Renaissance motets and should be performed using the same performance practices. Purity of tone should be emphasized and vibrato kept to a minimum. Moving lines should be sung expressively, while longer tones should swell. (Unless otherwise indicated.) The tempo may be slowed, depending on the acoustical quality of the performance space.

This is a beautiful and accessible 21st Century, Neo-Romantic a cappella setting of the Spanish Hail Mary prayer (Dios te salve, MarÃÂa) for SATB chorus, perfect for choirs ranging from high school to college and beyond. It also includes an alternate setting of the Latin Ave Maria prayer for those who might prefer that. A versatile musician, Alex Guerrero, whose setting of Tenebrae factae sunt was a prize winner in The New York Virtuoso Singers’ composition competition, always strives to write lyrical music that’s not only beautiful, but singable. He’s also an accomplished singer whose vast experience greatly informs his compositional style. As an operatic lyric tenor he performs with the Choruses at The Metropolitan Opera and Lyric Opera of Chicago; as a concert soloist his repertoire spans from Bach cantatas, Carl Orff's Carmina Burana, and frequent premieres of new music; and he has many years of experience performing as a chamber and concert choral artist with some of the premier ensembles in the US that include Yale Choral Artists and the Grammy Award-winning True Concord, as well as the symphonic choruses alongside world-renown orchestras like The Philadelphia Orchestra and The New York Philharmonic. He’s also an active liturgical musician in churches and synagogues with many years of experience serving in congregations of many different denominations: in New York City he’s served in the choirs at Temple Emanu-El, the largest Jewish Reform congregation in the US, the Anglican-style choir of men and boys at St. Thomas Church Fifth Avenue, Marble Collegiate Church, pulpit of the late Norman Vincent Peale, Congregation Shearith Israel - The Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue, an Orthodox Sephardi congregation which is the oldest Jewish congregation in North America, and is currently a staff cantor at St. Patrick’s Cathedral, one of the preeminent Roman Catholic cathedrals in the US.

A beautiful choir-only section spans stanzas three and four in major tonalities that nicely complement the staid minor of the rest of the hymn. A challenging, modern fugue requiring rhythmic intensity and constant metrical shifts. This piece keeps all four parts busy, particularly the basses, who churn along as the motor of the piece throughout. This piece was premiered by Resonance Vocal Ensemble in the summer of 2018. Text from Psalm 81. Appropriate for intermediate to advanced high school choirs and above.
Paul Osborne is a choral director, tenor soloist, and composer/arranger from California's Central Coast. He received his degree at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN, where he studied choral conducting with René Clausen. He is currently the Chorus Master for Opera San Luis Obispo and Central Coast Gilbert and Sullivan, the founder and director of Resonance Vocal Ensemble, the director of the Young Men?s Ensemble with the Central Coast Youth Chorus, and the worship leader at Paso Robles Church of the Nazarene. He performs frequently with the San Luis Obispo Master Chorale, The Cuesta Concord Chorus, and in the annual "Bach in the Mission" concert series with the Cal Poly Early Music Ensemble.
