After a straight forward opening succeeding verses are treated in different ways, to reflect the varying moods expressed by the words, varying from light hearted and humorous to dark and almost tragic.Each voice has an opportunity to hold the melody and there are sometimes dramatic exchanges between the parts. The score provides instructions and options for the performers, as well as an extended text from an eye-witness account of the volcanic eruptions in the island of Lanzarote, Canary Islands. Essentially, perfomers are free to create a (quasi) improvised piece, using the given text as they wish (for example, in full or in extract; with or without narrator; etc.). It is suggested that the work can even be used in a workshop context with performers, or even other composers, contributing musical material. All performers make use of the text-based 'score' provided. Howard (A0.1398861). This work is an unaccompanied choral setting of the famous poem by Christina Rossetti. It features a 3-verse structure (mirroring the text), with coda. The piece builds in textural complexity and density throughout, as an attempt to depict the increasing sense of abundant love, referred to in the text. The main melodic material is deliberately simple and rather folk/chant-like. This essentially appears as a single line in the first verse, becoming a two-part canon (by one bar) in the second verse, and finally a four-part canon (by half a bar) in the third verse. The imitative coda leads to ultimate resolution on an F major chord at the end. The work is highly accessible, and is designed for performance by good SATB choirs, able to effectively sustain such unaccompanied singing. Howard (A0.1088814). This piece is an original arrangement based on the wistful English folk melody 'Barbara Allen'. It takes the form of a 7-verse Epiphany carol, with introduction and coda, setting a poem by Laurie Twinam. Verse 1 gives the option for a single solo voice. Otherwise vocal lines, for SATB choir, retain the folk tune contour throughout, with fairly simple harmonies and a canon. Around this, the piano accompaniment weaves a set of characterful variations, as a commentary on each differing verse, which is always linked by a 2-bar 'turnaround'. The work explores aspects of both major and minor tonality, as well as modality (with the characteristic flattened seventh), thus working within and around the given folk idiom. This piece is appropriate for virtually any standard and size of SATB choir, including school, student, community, church and cathedral choirs. The accompaniment can be on piano, or for organ if slightly adapted by the player. The solo/unison and 2-part SA versions of this piece, as well as the solo piano version (Variations on 'Barbara Allen') by the same composer, are also available via Sheet Music Plus. Do You Hear How Many You Are? for SATB choir was written in April and May of 2010. The origins of this piece and text come from a very interesting experience I had in December of 2009. I have been learning a lot in the past few years about the state of our world and the many huge problems and crises we are faced with in the near future, and this discovery has been so daunting and overwhelming to me. So much change needs to happen in order for the near and long-term future of our world to be just and stable that I have felt a lot of guilt over my choice of profession. Why have I chosen to be a composer and musician when I could make more of an impact on solving these problems if I were a scientist or policy maker etc.? I have been struggling to find a solution to this dilemma for a while now and I just happened to be thinking about it, while filled with lots of stress and worries, one night as I was falling asleep in December of 2009. At the moment when I was in that state halfway between sleep and consciousness, I suddenly heard the line Do you hear how many you are? in my head, yet I felt as though I didn't come up with the line but that it was said TO me. I was instantly comforted, as if a load fell off my shoulders, and then I began to hear it being sung, which I knew was the beginning of a choral piece. I woke up, wrote down the music I was hearing (about the first six measures of the work) and then wrote down this entire poem. I truly feel that this message came to me for a reason, and that I need to share it through the music I create.
