Based on the tune FREU DICH SEHR/PSALM 42/GENEVAN 42. It opens with an assertive unison statement, later harmonized, and gathers momentum culminating in a convincing ending with the congregation joining to sing the hymn tune, Rustington. The optional brass quintet and timpani will add support and strength to the confident nature of the anthem. A reproducible page for congregation is included in the anthem. A gentle-sounding protest song with a not-so-gentle plea, "Bread And Roses" was written for the women workers' strike in Massachusetts in 1912. "Hearts starve as well as bodies; Give us bread, but give us roses." This arrangement was inspired by the film "Pride," concerning the British miners' strike in 1985. After singing the excellent Britten setting of this traditional song I was moved to write various versions of my own: The choral versions are more sophisticated than the original but different from and possibly rather easier than the Britten arrangement. The voice and guitar version has a more interesting guitar part than the traditional guitar chords. The sound samples are sung by Matthew Curtis of choraltracks.com for the choral versions and by Margaret Jackson-Roberts with the composer on guitar for the voice and guitar version. I dedicate this piece to my friends in the composer/singer collective, the Ad hoc Chorale, who tested out this piece in one of our informal workshops and offered valuable comments. Optional endings. Note that choirs have been given the option to choose which of the 3 endings they would like to sing, depending on how they feel the “story line†in the song should best reach its conclusion: (1) The “happy†ending appears to indicate that the narrator has been reunited with the friend or lover who departed. (2) The “less happy†ending plants a seed of doubt that no such reunion has happened; it may be in the narrator’s head. (3) The “even less happy†ending leaves listeners in even more doubt. NB: One day I woke up to the realization that I had independently written four choral works, each of which had evoked a different season, and so it seemed natural to group them together into a choral suite that I have called The Ottawa Four Seasons Suite. “How heavy lies the heart†seemed to work perfectly as the musical representative of an autumnal spirit.

Hear My Cry is a very personal prayer from the 61st Psalm written by David. It seems that words were not enough to express his inner turmoil so he needed to cry out to his Creator. While writing this piece I envisioned David falling at the feet of God, then compassionately being picked up and embraced. God, seeing David’s humility and faith, hears and answers his prayer. This contemporary choral setting uses cluster voicings and influences from jazz harmony to exploit the emotional intensity of the text.

My song Rupert the Chocolate Angel (Ruprecht der Schoko-Engel / Rupert l'ange au chocolat) (a parody of (or antidote to) that ubiquitous Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer song) uses a new melody which is strangely reminiscent of the reindeer song but is actually quite different. The words were also written by the composer. It has gone though several versions These include: 1 an SAB version in German and English (in which the bass part can also be played by a bass instrument if preferred) (in which the sound sample is performed by the composer in English and then in German) 2 a version for unison choir or solo voice and various accompaniments in English (in which the sound sample is performed by the composer) 3 a version for unison choir or solo voice and various accompaniments in French (in which the sound sample is performed by the composer in English) 4 a version for unison choir or solo voice and various accompaniments in German (in which the sound sample is performed by the composer in English) The pdf files for the unison choir/solo voice versions contain the original song (one line melody in E-flat and C and G with guitar chord names) and versions for piano and for piano and percussion, in the original key of E-flat.
