Gloria (A New Day Dawns) – for SATB choir with piano. This song, full of rhythmic and dynamic contrasts, acknowledges and celebrates each new day as a gift. In the close harmonies of the refrain, the meter alternates from 6/8 to 5/4 to 4/4 to enable the many rhythmic ways to sing the word Gloria, which your choir will enjoy. The middle section contains the simple message of the song with the four voices weaving together in a contrapuntal style. The piece represents a sunrise in all its glory and is essentially a fanfare to the dawn of a new day. English.Commissioned by the Saint Louis Chamber Chorus and premiered October 6, 2019, at Masonic Prince Hall, St. Louis, Missouri, Artistic Director Philip Barnes. The peninsula at Gallipoli in Turkey is now marked with cemeteries; particularly striking are the graves of Australian and New Zealand infantry, which are marked with epitaphs provided by the families of the fallen. Five of these epitaphs have been included in the text for “Waves of Gallipoli,†along with lines from poet Leon Gellert, a Gallipoli veteran. In the music we can hear the undulating of the Aegean Sea lapping the coastline of Gallipoli, sad melismas complement the idea of “moaning;†following the epitaphs, a single voice sounds the bugle call, “The Last Post,†which is sounded at ANZAC (Australia and New Zealand Army Corp) Day dawn services each year, memorializing the soldiers who fell at Gallipoli.

English.Commissioned to honor Ken and Diane Ketel for their many years of music ministry at First United Methodist Church in Rapid City, South Dakota. Scored for mixed choir and organ, this Advent anthem sets a Greek hymn text translated in 1907 by John Brownlie. The overall musical form is ABABA (and a short coda), with the A section essentially being a newly-composed Common Meter (86.86) hymn tune. Gentle multi-meter is applied throughout and serves to underscore the natural scansion of the text. This anthem was the 2018 winner of the Sewanee Church Music Conference Choral Composition Prize. Duration 3:20.

Originally scored for soprano solo, strings, and continuo, this edition provides an opportunity for unison voices to sing the original aria with any of the three instrumental options listed above. In addition to the original text, 2 English texts are provided. The first provides the Easter message and sentiment of the original German text while the second celebrates creation and the dawning of a new day. In 2009 when Sanctuary Choir of South Main Baptist Church in Houston where I served as Music Minister was scheduled to sing the National Anthem for the Houston Astros baseball game, I carefully examined the several arrangements in our library and other resources. Finding nothing which met the simple, straight-forward criteria I was searching for, we created this simple arrangement. Since its addition to the music library it has proven very useful on numerous occasions for a variety of groups. About the National Anthem:The lyrics for The Star-Spangled Banner were written on September 14, 1814 from a British ship in the Baltimore Harbor where attorney Francis Scott Key had waited anxiously through the night as the twenty-five hour bombing of Ft. McHenry progressed. He had been sent to negotiate the release of an American civilian and then was held on board the ship. At the dawn’s early light when the flag could still be seen indicating the British had not taken the fort, he jotted down this poem which on March 3, 1931 finally became the National Anthem of the United States. Interestingly, it was Robert Ripley who in November of 1929 drew a panel in his syndicated cartoon, Ripley’s Believe It or Not stating Believe It or Not, America has no national anthem. With the encouragement of John Philip Sousa, President Herbert Hoover signed into law the adoption of The Star-Spangled Banner to rectify this situation. According to the Smithsonian, the melody, written by John Stafford Smith, was originally titled Anacreon in Heaven. Anacreon was an ancient Greek poet known for his love of wine and love. The song had become the constitutional song of a London gentlemen’s club called the Anacreontic Society. Could this explain the wide range of the melody? By utilizing this tune to the moving text, this once merry drinking song took on a bold new and powerful meaning. Thomas Coker, August 27, 2015
