Based on one of only several poems written by my mother, Jewish Holocaust survivor Rita Hoffman of blessed memory (1927–2018), Only from Blood Does Freedom Grow echoes the words of Hatikvah (The Hope), the national anthem of Israel. I have to believe that she wrote this poem around 1948 because of how it is worded. I of course knew the source of inspiration for this poem when I reread it not long ago—something I had not done since the 1990s—but its having been inspired by Hatikvah was really driven home to me by a Facebook comment. That comment inspired me to compose a piece in which the opening and closing sections are based on the opening melody of Hatikvah, but in which the middle section is newly composed. “Israel was not created in order to disappear - Israel will endure and flourish. It is the child of hope and the home of the brave. It can neither be broken by adversity nor demoralized by success. It carries the shield of democracy, and it honors the sword of freedom.” —John F. William Butler Yeats ends his short story The Adoration of the Magi with the narrator describing a centuries old Gaelic prayer… when I pray against the demons I repeat a prayer which was made I know not how many centuries ago to help some poor Gaelic man or woman who had suffered with a suffering like mine.â€The ancient prayer is presented for female voices and solo violin followed by The Magi introducing piano and choir. Yeats’ Magi “appear and disappear†in modern times, with “their ancient faces like rain-beaten stonesâ€. He immediately offers her rich clothing if she will marry him instead. She rejects his offer, and yet almost immediately, she changes her mind, on condition that he be 'loyal and constant'. Finally, the erstwhile true love appears and is disappointed as he sees the pair disappearing into the distance. The green bushes are both part of the landscape and a symbol of virginity. This arrangement is scored for 4-part SATB ensemble to be performed a cappella. Performance time: 3:50+-.

In combination with research and friendship with an addict who disappeared down the rabbit hole, Audibly Exhale is my attempt to touch on some of the physical, mental and external effects of this most evil of drugs: paranoia, heart palpitations, panic attacks and auditory hallucinations. Modesta Bor, our composition teacher, always instilled in us the cultivation of this genre in the repertoire of our choirs and as creative work, in order to preserve it from its disappearance before the overwhelming invasion of other musical genres strange to our traditional Christmas holidays. PurÃsima and A ti te cantamos, they are part of the musical heritage of the 19th century in Venezuela. Out of the creative genius of Rafael Isaza and Ricardo Pérez, respectively, are two of the most beautiful aguinaldos collected, among many others, by the Maestro Vicente Emilio Sojo, and are part of our Christmas tradition. They are two praises to the Virgin Mary, mother of the Child Jesus. Either can be sung a cappella, although they can also be accompanied by our traditional cuatro.

MThRI #102033. Published by MThRI (A0.482270). This triptych is the focal point of the mass. It is written as three numbers attaca. Et incarnatus est is a set of sequences in an invertible counterpoint that ends with the transition to Crucifixus. The Crucifixus is rendered as a continuous repetition of a single tone (the B) by the baritone solo (Christ) on the background of choral responses in the late-Romantic harmonic language (neo-Riemannian, equal-division of the octave, Yavorski's Tritonal equilibrium, etc.). The bariton part is given a note beyond the baritone range. Extended techniques are welcome here. The high sopranos continue the ostinati in the background of the low piano octaves. The Et resurrexit is written as a pure atmospheric phenomenon--disappearing in clouds. The triptych ends with a quotation from the Gospel of St. Luke read by the baritone. THese three numbers can be performed as an anthem during the weeks of Lent or Easter.

He was seen earlier that evening, but then he was gone! While Mom and her two children, Michael & Bethany, tried to concentrate on reading the Christmas story, Dad helped Mrs. Kurtz look for her son. Where Joey turned up was a surprise to everyone! Mom pointed out that 2,000 years earlier, there was a missing Child, too.The story can be done with five speakers. It includes eight choir numbers, a ladies’ song, and one for children. There are a number of places for optional solos. Difficulty level is average. My desire is that the listener will make a decision about Christ - the missing Child. The choice is to accept Him or reject Him...and that choice will determine where each person will spend eternity.
