Songs from the Book Of Revelation is a powerful new cantata (SATB) and piano accompaniment consisting of 14 original songs from the book of Revelation that may be performed on any occasion throughout the year. I wrote this work during the height of the Coronavirus pandemic. I was inspired to praise God and compose new music using text from the book of Revelation. Next to each song title, I have provided the bible verses for easy access. I arranged the songs in chronological order, but may be sung in any order. Most of the songs are easy to medium in difficulty level, including the piano accompaniment. One of the songs titled Amen! Amen! (Revelation 7:12) is sung and played in whole tone scale and is challenging to perform. There is a couple of short solos, and acapella sections throughout the cantata. Check out the MIDI sample and video of this entire cantata in my YouTube channel with the link provided. All lyrics are shown on the screen as the music is playing. Enjoy performing this cantata and to God be the glory! Performance time is about 38 minutes (with repeats).

The title Three Sacred Songs: was given to these pieces rather than the more usual terms anthem or motet because of the strongly secular presence in the texts. The songs were written over a period of some eighteen months. The Shepherd Lad was finished on February 29, 2008. The Round Day and Magdalene’s Song were completed in Brooklyn on June 11, 2009, the music having been originally sketched-out on Christmas Day and Boxing Day 2008, at Putnam Valley, New York. In the first song, The Round Day, the singer hears the voice of the Blessed Virgin Mary as she sings to the glory of God throughout the day. The text was written on June 7, 2008. In The Shepherd Lad, the Spanish mystic Saint John of the Cross describes a shepherd lad’s (Jesus’s) love for a shepherdess (the Church) and how another (the Devil) tempted his love away. Heartbroken, the shepherd climbed a tree, “And threw wide his arms in sweetest charity, Since by His Shepherdess He was forsaken.†The original Spanish text was translated and adapted into Villanelle form by the composer in early December 2004. The text of Magdalene’s Song describes the feelings of a mystic, or a devotee of Jesus, inspired by the fresh beauty, grace and power of the Lord of creation. The main body of the text is given to a soprano solo. The text was written on April 27, 2008. These sacred songs were conceived as being performed either as a set or individually. The composer had secular ensembles in mind, such as college or concert choruses, but these songs may, of course, also be performed in a liturgical setting. The accompanying flute provides introductions, interludes and codas throughout the set and, on a few occasions, plays with the voices. The piano part is ad lib. (optional).

About the composer Orlando Lasso, Orlande de Lassus, Orlando di Lasso or Orlandus Lassus was born in Bergen (Dutch) or Mons (French) in Henegouwen, Belgium – which was a place in the Habsburg Netherlands at the time – in 1532, and was highly regarded as the best composer of his time. Temopraries appointed him titles like ‘ruler of music’ and ‘master of motets’. The roman-catholic composer was also one of the most productive composers of all times. Among his works are 53 masses for four to eight voices, and 1250 works for two to twelve voices in the form of motets, requiems, madrigals, chansons and songs for choir. Later in life, he wrote German drinking songs, as well as Dutch songs. From the latter category, none have been preserved. One of his drinking songs ‘Un jour vis un foulon qui fouloit’ was translated to English by William Shakespeare, after which it was used in his theatre play ‘Henry IV part 2’. About this work Prophetiae Sibyllarum is a motet in Latin for four voices. Posthumously published in 1600, it sets 12 prophecies attributed to the Sibyls (priestesses of Apollo later adopted by Christians) with a prologue.The movements are catalogued in order under separate opus numbers LV 1048 to 1060. About this edition This edition was notated from the composer’s manuscript (published around 1600), Das Chorwerk (Wolfenbüttel, 1937) and an anonymous reading score. The note values were halved for easier sightreading by modern singers. Recordings by De Labyrintho were studied for interpretation. On the base of these recordings, small checkmarks are added at places where collective breathing moments are suggested. These are not part of the manuscript.Great care has been put in the correct notation of the original work, as well as in solving apparent inconsistencies in the source materials. However, this edition was made purely to acommodate singers to study the melodic lines and should not be used for historic purposes.

What is Wisdom?In Proverbs 8:5-11 she says,Learn prudence, acquire intelligence, …take my instruction instead of silver,and knowledge rather than choice gold,for Wisdom is better than jewels. This suite of three songs is appropriate for use in a Christian or Jewish religious service or a secular concert. It includes a short audience participation possibility at the end of the last song. All are written for flute, piano, ethnic drum, SATB plus a high soprano part that can be a soloist. The drum part is written out, but could be improvised. The first song, Hear My Call, is short (1:49) and could be used as a call to worship in a religious service. The second song, God Created Me, (4:36) is an anthem of praise using the wonderful words of the creation of Wisdom in Proverbs 8:22-36 with a descant of the creation story in the book of Ben Sira 24:3, found in the Apocrypha. The tenors and basses sing the comparison of Wisdom with the trees of Israel, also found in Ben Sira, all in praise of Wisdom. The third song, Choose Life, (1:16) includes a chant that can be sung by the congregation or audience along with the choir. This could be used as the final hymn in a religious service. All three songs can be used separately or together. At the end of the score you will find a copy of the congregational chant which can be copied and placed in an Order of Service or Program. The recording is electronically produced and therefore has choral oohs without words. All three songs are on the recording, and at the end there is a flute rendering of the chant.. Liberator is from a collection of Psalm-based songs composed by Paul K Heatley while participating in an artist residency program run by Fuller Seminary for which Paul was sponsored by his local church in Pasadena, CA. The song is a setting of the Magnificat from Luke's gospel with words taken from The Voice, a New Testament translation created with artists and musicians in mind. Once Paul had decided to use this translation, the music seemed to flow naturally from the words, resulting in a classical-style piece with a format very like a modern song (it even has a middle-eight, though it's in a different key). Mary's prophetic song is arranged here for SATB with a strong soprano part, but can also be sung as a soprano solo.

Love is and was my Lord and King is a delightful miniature in neo-baroque style. It is relatively straightforward as long as the singers can keep up with the modulations. Crossing the bar is quiet and meditative, again relatively straightforward although it requires (ideally) basses able to sing down to a low D-flat. Of old sat Freedom on the heights is by far the most demanding of the three but also the most exhilarating if performed well, with a piano part that is cheerfully out of sync with the choir for much of the time.

What's Cookin'? takes its sweet time tantalizing the listener with all the menu items of a truly Southern feast. Music, set to a slow tempo in swing eighths, makes the recitation tempting, if not downright sultry.3. Bugs is a soundscape of insects and their songs. Precise vocal effects make this challenging but also whimsical, and the result is pure fun.4. Love, O Love recalls an old-fashioned love letter in which the writer compares the beloved to the moon and the sun and pledges eternal love. The music begins with lush chords sung together, moves to an over-arching soprano line with gentle undulations in the lower parts, and finishes with the choir singing together again, Love shines on you, my only one.5. A perfectly apt finale to this choral suite, Kentucky Derby begins with a nod to My Old Kentucky Home, and then it's off to the races, literally. The text of the suite is declaimed rapidly in patter-song format, almost as if the chorus is calling race as it progresses. A tour de force, and truly, ..a wild ride!

The Gift to Sing is a poem by James Weldon Johnson (1871-1938) published in 1917. The central theme of the text is one of optimism and resilience, using the power of song – meaning, more broadly, art or any kind of artful, heightened expression – to overcome adversity. Although the poem can be interpreted broadly to pertain to any kind of struggle, it is likely that Johnson, as a civil-rights activist was alluding more specifically to the oppression African-Americans in the United States, a struggle that continues to this day, in 2020. I composed this setting in September of 2020, right after the Black Lives Matter protests that took place that summer, so current events played a role in this interpretation on my part as well. If one reads the poem as pertaining the continued struggle of African Americans, some passages may come across as ambiguous. For instance, I brood not over the broken past should not be taken as suggesting that the horrors of the past should be forgotten, but as an injunction that the memory of these horrors should not discourage us or diminish our resolve to work toward overcoming the injustices. The musical inspiration for the opening of the piece comes from the song Lonesome Valley, which starts with a pentatonic melodic gesture. The pentatonic scale is often used in African American Spirituals, Christian hymns, and folksongs (e.g., Swing Low, Sweet Chariot, Amazing Grace, How Can I Keep from Singing?, Red River Valley, Oh Shenandoah). The more rhythmic parts take inspiration from the African-American spiritual tradition, as found for instance in the choral music of Moses Hogan (1957-2003). Meanwhile, the tenor solo at the end, is intended to be very loud, bright, and without the pronounced vibrato one would find in a Western operatic style. This kind of bright and intense vocal sound is not unfamiliar to most listeners, who may have encountered it in places as varied as Sacred Harp singing, the opening of the Lion King soundtrack, or the Muslim call to prayer.
