As On The Night is a song text for Christmas Day by English poet, satirist, pamphleteer, and hymn-writer George Wither (1588-1667), whose life spanned the tumultuous period in English history that included the reigns of Elizabeth I, James I, and Charles I and the continuous tension between Catholic and Protestant faith and practice. Desiring to counter the practice of exclusively using psalms as texts for congregational singing in worship, Wither published in 1623 The Hymnes and Songs of the Church, with The First Part comprehend[ing] Hymns, and such parcels of Holy Scripture, as may properly be sung, with some other ancient Songs and Creeds, and The Second Part consist[ing] of Spiritual Songs, appropriated to the several Times and Occasions observable in the Church of England. As On The Night appears in part two as a song to commemorate Christmas Day. Its first stanza is a retelling of elements of the Nativity story as found in Luke 2:7-20; its second stanza is a consideration of the Incarnation and work of Christ (Our flesh he wore, our sin to wear away; Our curse he bore, that we escape it may; And wept for us that we might sing for aye.).The music accompanying As On the Night is Song 46, one of many tunes written for Wither's collection by English composer and keyboardist Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625). Arranged for solo female voice, SATB choir and piano, this is a song of hope, the hope of a girl to escape the workhouse during the Irish Famine years and to travel to make a new life in Australia. At the time the British Crown was encouraging girls to emigrate as a means to redress the gender balance in the colonies – there were simply too many men and not enough women. Over four thousand young women took this journey between 1848 and 1850. The composer Brendan Graham expressed his own hope that this song might have significance for the descendants of those girls, many of whom were present at the song’s first performance in 2012 at the Irish Famine Commemoration in Sydney.

Maya Angelou's work inspires me, so I set her poem Caged Bird to music with divisi SATB choir and English horn, which represent the cage and the bird, respectively. The longing call of the solo reed instrument tries to escape the clutch of the choir narrating its predicament with voice. It was nice not having to write my own text, but I did choose this poem intentionally at the dawn of the Covid-19 pandemic. My aim was to embody the hollow feeling of living in a society that offers freedom with one hand but firmly directs people with the other. The PDF download includes the score followed by the English Horn part. The piano reduction, not audible in the recording, is nice for rehearsal but optional for the performance.

The Nembutsu that is uttered with the mind of delusion is like a lotus flower unstained by the muddy water. There should not be any doubt as to our attainment of birth.We should not be concerned about our delusion, but reflecting on the shallowness of our mind of faith, continually recite the Name in earnest.

Published by Becky Sun (A0.902077). Many African American spirituals have dual meanings. On the surface, Wade in the Water is about Christian baptism or the Israelites crossing the Red Sea. Harriet Tubman used the song as a code to remind enslaved people who were escaping to get into a body of water when slavecatchers’ dogs were after them. God helps by troubling the water so the dogs would have an even harder time catching the escapees’ scent. The original verses are wonderful but rather opaque (by design), so I wrote two new verses to make the message and setting of this song more apparent for the modern audience.
