Published by David Baldwin (A0.1319175). Eventide is powerfully narrative in style: a yearning and intimate prayer that our Shepherd would be near in the night (symbolic of difficult times). The piece uses M.L. Hofford's lyrics, which he penned in response to the human cost of war. On a personal level, Hofford's lyrics struck me as especially comforting after an unusually sobering death in the community. The verses are decidedly minimalist and have a chant-like beauty to them, so as to emphasize pondering. The refrains fill out in texture (up to 7 parts) as the prayer shifts to beckoning.1. Abide with me; 'tis eventide. The day is past and gone; the shadows of the evening fall; the night is coming on. Within my home a welcome guest, within my home abide.2. Abide with me, 'tis eventide. Thy walk today with me has made my heart within me burn as I communed with thee. Thy earnest words have filled my soul and kept me near thy side.3. Abide with me, 'tis eventide. And lone will be the night if I cannot commune with thee, nor find in thee my light. The darkness of this world, I fear, would in my home abide.Refrain: O Savior, stay this night with me; behold, 'tis eventide. Amen.

Three Evening Canticles were written as part of a setting of choral evensong for Church of the Holy Apostles - Anglican, Fort Worth, Texas. Metrical, mostly homophonic, and conservative in technical challenges and ranges, these canticles are accessible for small choirs and those of moderate ability, yet musically satisfying for large and accomplished groups. Phos Hilaron (“O Gladsome Lightâ€) is one of the earliest known Christian hymns (ca. 3rd-4th century) recorded outside of the Bible. Intended to be sung at the kindling of lights in the evening, it is sometimes known as the “lamp-lighting hymn†and has been adopted by some Anglican bodies as an optional invitatory canticle immediately preceding the psalm(s) appointed for the day.Magnificat (The Song of Mary) is a scriptural canticle based on an account in the Gospel of Luke (1:46-55). Mary, the expectant mother of Jesus, visits her cousin  Elizabeth, the expectant mother of John the Baptist, who will prophetically proclaim the coming of the Messiah. Elizabeth praises Mary for her faith and subjection to God’s will, and Mary responds, “My soul doth magnify the Lord ... for he that is mighty hath magnified me ... and his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations.†The Magnificat is said or sung immediately after the first lesson (scripture reading) in the service of evening prayer. Nunc Dimittis (The Song of Simeon) is also a scriptural canticle taken from Luke (2:29-32).  Simeon, a devout Jew, had been promised by the Holy Spirit that he would not die until he had seen the Messiah. When Mary and Joseph bring the infant Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem for the ceremony of redemption of the firstborn son, Simeon takes the child into his arms and says “Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace ... for mine eyes have seen thy salvation.†The Nunc Dimittis is said or sung after the second lesson in evening prayer.Texts for these settings are from The Book of Common Prayer (2019), Traditional Language Edition, according to the use of the Anglican Church in North America, and they are largely the texts of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer of the Church of England.©Copyright 2023 Todd Marchand / Con Spirito Music (ASCAP). The lyrics were written in 1847 by Henry Francis Lyte, an English pastor, poet and musician, only a few weeks before he died from tuberculosis. He was inspired by Saint Luke's account of Christ's appearance with His two disciples on the way to Emmaus: They urged Him strongly: Stay with us, for it is nearly evening; the day is almost over. (Luke 24:29). The music was composed by William Henry Monk, music editor of the famous Anglican Church hymnal Hymns Ancient and Modern, and it was included in the first edition of that hymnal in 1861. Mrs. Monk has described in her own words the context: This tune was written at a time of great sorrow - when together we watched, as we did daily, the glories of the setting sun. As the last golden ray faded, he took some paper and penciled that tune which has gone all over the earth. This score is the complete version of Abide With Me for choir SATB. I found this song in a very old hymnbook, so old that you could feel the raised print on the page, and loved the lyrics so much and felt that a minor melody would suit it extraordinarily well. This piece works well as a choir anthem for funerals or for any evensong themed service, and is written in a comfortable, singable range for everyday singers. The psalm is a deeply personal reflection by the psalmist on the wonder of my being and on the inescapability of God's love, wherever we might try to hide, and whatever we might do ourselves or might experience - even death. This gentle setting for unaccompanied SATB choir uses the full range of all four choral voices, with just one divisi passage at the end of the composition in the tenor and bass parts. The piece should be sung meditatively, without too much drama, even in the fortissimo passages, aiming for a sense of wonder and inner peace. Psalm 139 O Lord, you have searched me out and known me; you know all my sitting down and rising; you discern my thoughts from afar. I used to spend time alone in nature, camping, and one night while playing my guitar and looking up at the stars, the song came to me; it just flowed out of me. It’s a love song to God but it could also be to a woman. I’ve left it ambiguous so that people can take it how they wish. Basically, it’s just about a guy who’s searching. I’m a seeker. I think I’ll always be a seeker. The change of wording from 'Come on, let the sun' to 'The morning sun' is deliberate, based on singing wrong words to the album track as a child!

This concertato (festive hymn) arrangement is set for congregation, SATB choir, trumpet in Bb, and organ. The trumpet and congregation feature in the first and last verses with choir and organ, the choir sing the middle three verses. The harmonic language is dignified throughout and the choral writing in the middle verses is a perfect accompaniment to the text. Suited to all patriotic occasions such as Veteran's and Armistice Day. The full score runs to nine pages and the separate one page trumpet score is attached. The performance duration is five minutes and the score is of an intermediate difficulty level. (See also my 'Amazing Grace' and 'Blessed Assurance' concertato arrangements).

My worship professor often cited the revival era hymn, Love Lifted Me, with its cheerful, lilting melody beneath doleful lines of sin-speckled poetry, as the epitome of poor tune and text pairing. I countered that the point of the hymn is the sinner’s joy in redemption and the happy nature of the music is appropriate to its ultimate message. Yet, my professor’s words lingered over the years to the point that I endeavored to revisit the hymn in consideration of a more functional melding of tune and text. The result is this choral anthem, Love Lifted Me, setting a slightly adapted version of James Rowe’s poetry. Even though the music is completely new, albeit quoting snippets of the original hymn tune, it has an air of familiarity that melds with the text to paint its message in a fresh light. For example, the passages remembering sin and despair are aimless and brooding, while the lines rejoicing over redemption are flowing, energetic, and ebullient. Listen to Love Lifted Me and let your ears be the judge whether this setting expresses the story of personal redemption fittingly.Arranged for SATB chorus and piano, this anthem fills the role of personal testimony and witness with an evangelistic call to respond to the Gospel. I also have published a simpler version for children's choir or anyone who wishes not to sing harmony. It even includes a time to interact with the congregation.
