The first text is based on Psalm 100 and is suitable as a hymn to begin a service, and the second is based on Matthew 28:19-20 and is suitable to conclude a service. It begins with a brass and choral fanfare that leads into a sturdy unison rendition of the first stanza, and develops from there, including the option of a choral stanza without organ, brass, timpani, or congregation. Psalms 100.This anthem was commissioned by Dorothy Yates to mark the 50th anniversary of St. Dunstan’s Episcopal Church, Atlanta, Georgia. The text is announced by a brief fanfare on the organ. The raised 4th scale degree of the opening theme suggests the Lydian mode and accentuates the music’s upward thrust. Following the opening fanfare, the setting passes back and forth between duple and triple meter several times. Triple and duple rhythmic elements occur simultaneously and play off of one another. In the anthem’s middle section, the rhythmic energy of the opening is exchanged for a gentle extended crescendo as voices alternately sing their four-note, stepwise, rising lines over sustained organ chords. Then, the more energetic and somewhat metrically ambiguous elements of the previous section return. Finally, the text and music heard at the anthem’s opening recur in the manner of an antiphon. Duration: 3:20.

Published by Gordon John Thornett (A0.821201). Prelude and Cherubic Hymn was commissioned by the John F. Kennedy School in Berlin, to mark the 25th anniversary of their annual Advent services held in Berlin Cathedral. It was performed by joint choirs, drawn from students, parents and faculty, and choir members of the American Church in Berlin on 29 November 2017.The piece is built around the ancient hymn, Let all mortal flesh keep silence. I was asked to write an organ prelude, to serve as a processional as the choirs assembled. This may be ordered separately through SwirlyMusic.org - and now also through SheetMusicPlus.After an opening fanfare-like section, the hymn setting starts gently, with sopranos singing in unison, with successive verses using contrasting choral forces to reflect the words, and the music builds to a big climax, with a return of the fanfare opening, for the final verse, At his feet the six-winged seraph, ending with joyful Alleluias. Although originally conceived for a large chorus with orchestral accompaniment, the setting may be performed with just organ or piano.There's a youtube video at https://youtu.be/HQwYDJRdmcc - this is an extract from the first performance in the magnificent setting of Berlin Cathedral, which was packed to capacity. The quality of both sound and picture isn't great, but it will provide you with an idea of the atmosphere and impact of the piece. The sound recording covers the whole piece, using Sibelius sounds. Psalms 18:1-3; Ephesians 2:20.A big, fun anthem for SATB choir and organ, this works its way up to two full verses of WESTMINSTER ABBEY, the last of which can use the congregation. All the celebratory bases are covered, from the organ fanfares and choir declamatory pronouncements, to the Alleluias which are between the verses and at the end of the piece. The choir parts are easy and the result is unrestrained joyfulness.
