A seasonable celebration for SATB choir, optional youth choir and narrator, with piano (or brass quintet, or string quintet, score and parts available from www.colneedition.co.uk). Duration c. 25-30 minutes. This 8-movement cantata contrasts the cooking of the Christmas dinner with more reflective Christmas themes, with an opportunity for the audience to join in at the end. Ideal for Christmas concerts. We welcome you to our ‘Feast for Christmas’. In the first movement, Christmas Welcome, the scene is set: but the key to a successful Christmas dinner is forward planning and in the second movement the Christmas Pudding is prepared in November, on ‘Stir-up Sunday’. In the third movement, Christmas Eve, the early twentieth century poet Robert Bridges looks back, on a frosty evening, from his own time to the very distant past, and considers what Christmas means to him. Then in the fourth movement, our Christmas Feast is prepared, and the Christmas Grace (fifth movement) is not forgotten. It is of course impolite to sing during the actual Christmas Dinner itself, but towards the end of the meal the peace is rudely interrupted by the sixth movement, Christmas Crackers. The seventh movement, Christmas Spirit, reminds us, in seventeenth-century words, of how we should share our good fortune with those who have need of it, and in the last movement, Christmas Celebration, the audience is invited to join in, with the last verse of the well known ‘We wish you a merry Christmas’ Some separate movements are also available: Christmas Recipe, Festival (Christmas) Grace, and Christmas Celebration. Alan Bullard’s choral works are performed worldwide, and many have been recorded and broadcast. He has a growing reputation for music that choirs enjoy performing, and which speaks directly to audiences. Missa humilis (= Humble Mass) in D, a mass for choir a cappella based on the Catholic liturgical text and with all its themes based on Orthodox chants: no fanatic dogmatism, nor leveling ecumenism, but aiming simply at unity in spirit, love and truth. Suitable for use in church services, due to its modest length, forces, and contemplative character. Its style is accessible, based on church modes and mostly consonances and some non-functional chords, yet not ostensibly modernist and almost neo-impressionistic. The movements: Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus, Benedictus, Agnus Dei, and Dona nobis pacem. The present publication includes the choral score and an organ part for rehearsal use only. Brock Commission for the 2003 American Choral Directors Association National Convention, Memorial is based on subject material which reflects the horrific events of September 11, 2001 in New York City. Though presented as one continuous movement, the composition follows a program that comprises four sub-sections: September Morning, The Attack, Prayers, and Petitions. The first two sections reflect the actual chain of events leading up to and including the attacks upon the World Trade Center Towers. The music of destruction, however, is kept to a minimum in favor of musical emphasis upon a possible spiritual response to these events. Healing, cleansing and hope are the main themes of the work, whose primary text of the final section is one verse from Psalm 80, O God, shine your light on us, and we shall be saved. Although composed with the events of 9/11 in mind, nowhere does the text specifically mention 9/11 or the specific events of the day.
