An energetic new setting of the classic sacred text, "Cantate Domino" was commissioned as a competition piece by maestro Rolandas Daugela for the Cantate Domino International Choral Festival and Competition of 2017.
The piece opens with a triumphant fanfare, accompanied by an energetic rhythmic figure in the tenors and basses. This first theme is contrasted by the second section - a warm, contemporary "benedicite" theme, followed by a lyrical, folk-inspired "quia mirabilia". The final section is an exciting reprise of the first theme, but this time the tenors and basses carry the fanfare in four-part harmony while the sopranos and altos provide the driving accompaniment. In the final bars of the piece, the choir ascends in a powerful crescendo to a magnificent final cadence.
For a cappella SATB chorus with some divisi. Score includes piano reduction (for rehearsal). Also included: bonus version without piano reduction (for easier reading for singers).

This work was originally composed for choir by Bernadette Debattista and was first performed at the Dawn Service, commemorating the centenary of the Gallipoli landings, in ANZAC Cove on 25 April 2015 by a combined choir from St Joseph’s College, Gregory Terrace and All Hallows’ School. This extended work sees the original theme recomposed for big band and choir. It may be performed in its entirety or the third movement may be omitted (or presented as spoken word only) if a choir is not available. The sax section requires the following doubles: Clarinet for Alto Saxes 1 and 2, and Tenor Sax 2; Flute for Tenor Sax 1; Bassoon for Bari Sax (although a Bari Sax part with no doubles has been included). There is also an optional part for Eb Sarrusophone! Trumpets require Flugelhorns and Harmon mutes.The recording features excerpts from each of the four movements and a brief description of each follows.1. Distant Shores With its jaunty, march-like feel, one can only imagine what it must have been like as these young men and women travelled to far off places, fired with the thrill of adventure, blind to the trauma and terrors of war. 2.Your Sons Are Our Sons The title for this movement is a paraphrase of a line in a speech given by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in which he speaks of the special bond between Australia and Turkey. This movement features solo space for Piano and Trumpet.3.Reflection This movement features a small vocal group, including some of the singers who were present at the 2015 performance in ANZAC Cove, and a reading of the poem that became the lyrics of the song. 4.Hymn The final movement presents the theme in close to its original form, although extensively re-harmonised. A solo trumpet for most of the movement.I hope you enjoy performing this work.

The meaning behind the track focuses on the pressures of being true to oneself and living up to expectations, especially in the ongoing age of social media.The verses describe a hypocrisy and controlling, manipulative struggle with the singer's physicality and mental state. The quotes tell her to act a certain way or mold into a specific shape, but also mention to not go too far in either category. Not having a clear direction and attempting to please others makes the singer feel like they're losing their mind.Lauren Mayberry, the lead vocalist, said The barebones of thesong were there in about an hour and the opening line of thesong was the first lyric that came out.The song released with a music video following Mayberry trapped inside a transparent revolving door with no way ofescaping. She's seen bashing against the glass attempting to break out with shots of her spinning around.Martin Doherty, the synthesist and producer of the band, said The chords felt like they had this eternal tension in them—they never actually release, even though they get really big. Itfeels to me like a panic attack.The lyrics enhance this tense suffocation with Mayberry's build up in the pre chorus followed by her highest range in the chorus. She switches between a false voice/autotune into her natural voice after breaking free from the silence. Almost as if her falsified persona is begging for release but no one responds to her cry for help.

The Old Palmer Song is a favourite Australian folk song that is meant to be sung in a rollicking style that reflects the excitement and anticipation of hardy Australian colonials setting out in search of gold. Following hard on the heels of the great California gold rushes (1848 – 1855) came the discovery of payable quantities of gold in Australia. The first gold rush in Australia began in New South Wales in May 1851 after prospector Edward Hargraves discovered gold near Orange, at a site he called Ophir. Other discoveries quickly followed, including those at Ballarat and Bendigo in the colony of Victoria. Then came Rosewood and Gympie (1867) in Queensland; the Gawler region in South Australia in 1868; and Halls Creek (1885), Kalgoorlie and Coolgardie (1893) in Western Australia. One of Australia’s richest alluvial goldfields was that of the Palmer River in far north Queensland. The rush to the Palmer began in 1873 and lasted for about three years. The goldfields were nearly 100 miles inland from the small coastal settlement of Cooktown and the early prospectors had a hard time of it just getting to the field. Leaving Cooktown they crossed the coastal mangroves, then on through dense tropical rainforest, into the more open eucalypt forest beyond and then across the dry, inhospitable and rugged country of the hinterland dissected by wide and deep rivers. And always there was the risk of meeting with fierce resistance from the Aborigines whose tribal land they were travelling through. At the height of the rush there were around 35,000 prospectors on the Palmer (including a great many Chinese). By the time the rush was over, the Palmer had yielded over 100 tons of gold! The Old Palmer Song is set to the tune of Ten Thousand Miles Away, a shore ballad/sea shanty that probably originated in Ireland in the early 19th Century.

In 1 John, we witness the Apostle (that Jesus loved) writing as the elder statesman of the faith in the last third of the 1st century. In chapter two, verse seven, John refers to the church as beloved and proceeds by telling them of a new commandment. He says (verses 9-11), Whoever loves his brother, abides in the light and there is no cause for stumbling. But whoever hates his brother is in the darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes. From this text, John immediately segues into verses 12-14, to affirm for his followers that as far as they are concerned, there is no darkness in them for they are the children of the Light to whom he was earlier referring. John achieves this transition by employing yet another 1st century Hymn to Christ, which I have entitled, Through His Name. This anthem is an affirmation of the faith, first to the little children, then to the fathers, and then to the young men. What is very interesting is that the first stanza is written in the present tense (I am writing to you) but the second stanza, with very similar wording, is written in the past tense (I have written to you). It’s as if to say, you heard the Gospel message before, and you believed, and I am writing it to you again, so that you may continue to believe.

De Vecchi poté studiare musica strumentale, armonia e composizione. I suoi progressi furono così rapidi che, fattosi salesiano, divenne il più attivo collaboratore del M. Cagliero, e, allorché questi partì per l'Argentina a capo della prima spedizione di missionari salesiani (1875), a lui fu affidata la direzione della Schola cantorum,e nel 1889 anche della banda musicale dell'Oratorio. Maestro impareggiabile - come attesta un suo ex-allievo, don Alberto Caviglia - trasformò la scuola di canto col suo metodo d'insegnamento, sia nella preparazione della lettura, sia nell'educazione delle voci bianche e nell'addestramento delle masse corali, che giunsero fino a quattrocento voci. Con mezzi così poderosi il M. Dogliani ricondusse in chiesa la musica classica, e la Basilica di Maria Ausiliatrice fu rinomata per le grandiose esecuzioni inappuntabili degli spartiti di Rossini, Cherubini, Haydn, Gounod, Sgambati, Bossi, Tebaldini, Pagella, Perosi, Bottazzo, Ravanello, Mattioli, Donini, giungendo perfino a eseguire la Missa Papae Marcelli del Palestrina, senza accompagnamento (1876), e le classiche composizioni di Vittoria, Lolli, Gabrielli, Orlando di Lasso. La presenza della sua Schola cantorum e della sua banda strumentale fu spesso ambita e richiesta in altre città d'Italia in solenni circostanze, meritando elogi e premi, e perfino a Marsiglia per le feste centenarie di santa Giovanna d'Arco e l'inaugurazione della nuova cattedrale (1894). Il Cagliero - di cui ridusse a stile liturgico le più solenni composizioni - lo invitò in Argentina per portarvi la sua esperienza pratica d'insegnamento, che poi concretò nel celebre Metodo di canto corale, edito varie volte e su cui si formarono generazioni di Pueri cantores. Fu pure compositore di musica sacra e inni d'occasione di ottimo effetto: notevole l'antifona Corona aurea, composta per l'incoronazione dell'effige di Maria Ausiliatrice nel suo santuario (1903). Ma soprattutto egli - seguendo il metodo educativo di don Bosco - seppe fare della scuola di canto e di banda validi strumenti di formazione interiore, educando soprattutto con l'esempio di perfetto religioso, sicché i suoi allievi, per la sua abituale compostezza e inalterabile pazienza, lo tenevano in concetto di santo. Tra essi vi fu pure il celebre tenore Francesco Tamagno; altro suo discepolo affezionatissimo fu Federico Caudana, poi maestro di cappella a Cremona e buon compositore di musica. But, one bright Summer's evening, I left them behind; put my feet to the road and I followed them blind - searching for fortune - and what I might find. And it’s oh! But it’s been a long time! The rake of their reels would make the lame walk. But still, at the close of a fine Autumn day, I packed up my bags and I went on my way - searching for fortune but finding low pay. And it’s oh! Far up the west coast, in Aran and Clare, there's harpers to bring you a magical aire. I listened, enthralled, till the Winter came on, then pulled up my boots - and soon I was gone - searching for fortune for still I had none. And it’s oh! But it’s been a long time! And I hope that we meet again soon. I saw her but once, by the light of the moon. She said she would give me a song with no tune. I rested, by chance, at the close of the day, by a small rounded hill, where I happened to stray. And there, as the drowsiness over me stole, I dreamed of a woman with eyes black as coal - And the fortune she held was the song of my soul. And it’s oh! But it’s been a long time!
