Who We Love by Sam Smith is a moving ballad that has beautiful harmonic integrity. This arrangement is for average- to larger-sized SATB a cappella groups, and sits at a intermediate-advanced difficulty for high school/collegiate groups. This arrangement is similarly for the a cappella group looking to explore cluster chords while fulfilling a slow, but moving ballad slot for your song set. While there isn’t a vocal percussionist part in the score, there is a slight amount of body percussion involved in the second verse, which can be replaced by a vocal percussionist if desired.This arrangement features incredible harmonies, including many cluster chords that sound full and rich; these cluster chords are often met with two- and occasionally three-part splits within each voice part, which makes it crucial for each part to be solid. If your group does not have enough members to satisfy the three-part splits, one of the notes can be omitted for a similar sounding product. Additionally, there are two solo opportunities featured, each with the exact same range. If only one solo is desired, the soloist can simply follow the melody. You’re the Voice is a powerful protest song written by Andy Qunta, Keith Reid, Chris Thompson and Maggie Ryder, and recorded by the very popular Australian singer John Farnham for his album Whispering Jack in 1986.The song was one of the biggest hits of 1986 in Australia, topping the singles chart for seven weeks. In 1987 it was awarded the ARIA Award for Single of the Year. It was also one of Farnham’s biggest successes in Europe, charting at No. 1 in Germany and Sweden and reaching the Top 10 in Austria, Ireland, Switzerland and the UK.The song’s main message is an empowering one, encouraging people everywhere to take a stand against corruption and to make their voices heard. It can also be described it as an anti-war song, since it was released in the mid-80s, during the height of the Cold War.Farnham’s version of You’re the Voice contains one of the most famous bagpipe solos ever recorded. It was played by a group of four pipers. If you have a bagpipe soloist/s available, tacet the choir in the bagpipe section (from measure 59) to get the full effect!The SATB arrangement provides scope for a massed choir situation: have a children’s choir sing the Soprano or Soprano and Alto parts in the section beginning at measure 84, with the semi chorus being a group of 3 or more strong singers, ensuring an appropriate balance between the solo, semi-chorus and full choir.

As with Bach's great Passion settings, the role of the Evangelist is taken by the tenor soloist, who provides a melodious narrative throughout the work, in arioso style. The words of Jesus and Pilate are performed by solo baritones. Within the narrative, the SATB chorus becomes a crowd or a group of soldiers, commenting on the story in short outbursts, although the larger role of the choir is to perform the four meditations and five hymns that support the story. For the meditations-two of which include soprano solos-Chilcott has selected English poems from the 13th to the early 17th centuries.The five well-known hymn texts are set to new, original melodies, which are also intended for performance by an audience or congregation.

The air of a folk-song is maintained, while hints of music-theatre inspired harmony give the music a slight contemporary edge. The texture ranges from solo through to full four-part harmony. The soprano and alto parts never go above the stave, and the tenor and bass parts reach an E4 only twice. So, this arrangement is perfectly accessible for school choirs. The bass verse at the beginning could work well as a solo. In fact, there are several ways in which each of the voice parts can be divided into small groups or solos. Duration is approx. 3 minutes. It was featured in Grey's Anatomy in 2007 and is on Grey's Anatomy Soundtrack album 3 (released September 11). About four years later, a version of the song has been recorded by Grey's Anatomy actress Sara Ramirez and was first presented in the 2011 episode Song Beneath the Song. The track was later covered by LeAnn Rimes for her Remnants album and by Dolly Parton for the charity tribute album Cover Stories. This arrangement for SATB choir and piano is based on Brandie Carliles recording and features some fine tenor solos as well as rich tutti harmonies which all work fine for young and/or intermediate singers. The piano part can also be extended for a rock band.
