William Shakespeare references the tune several times in his play The Merry Wives of Windsor. The song was set in 1865 by English hymn writer William Chatterton Dix to a Christmas text depicting the adoration of the shepherds of the birth of Jesus. This joyous and straightforward arrangement for SATB chorus and piano is suitable for all choirs during the Advent and Christmas seasons. Optional string accompaniment parts are available for sale separately.

The title of the cantata was borrowed from the book The Living Cathedral: St John the Divine: A History and Guide. The following statement by St John the Divine expresses some of my motivation for composing it:St John the Divine embraces a community that extends beyond the Episcopal Church to include people of many faiths and cultures here in New York City…The Cathedral is a living place of worship built on a foundation of purpose and inspiration…Since its founding in 1893, the Cathedral has stood as a ‘house of prayer for all nations,’ inspired by the wave of immigration that took place over the last four decades of the 19th century. The values of inclusion and community have remained integral to the Cathedral and all who visit.It is my hope, not only for communities of faith, but for all people to strive and achieve the human ideals of tolerance, understanding and kindness. Published by Geoffrey Peterson (A0.1303857). Robert Frost wrote “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening†in 1922. Frost referred to the poem as his “best bid for remembrance.†It was published, along with other celebrated poems, including “Fire and Ice†and “Nothing Gold Can Stay,†in his collection “New Hampshire†in 1923. I intended the slow repeating tone cluster chords in the last section as a solemn meditation on death. I wanted to be as deliberate as possible with the poem’s two concluding quintessential lines “And miles to go before I sleep, And miles to go before I sleep.â€Â Whose woods these are I think I know.His house is in the village though;He will not see me stopping hereTo watch his woods fill up with snow.My little horse must think it queerTo stop without a farmhouse nearBetween the woods and frozen lakeThe darkest evening of the year.He gives his harness bells a shakeTo ask if there is some mistake.The only other sound’s the sweepOf easy wind and downy flake.The woods are lovely, dark and deep,But I have promises to keep,And miles to go before I sleep,And miles to go before I sleep.
