I admire the expressive power that the skilled poet can wring out of such bare economic means.  A scene, painted so poignantly, so vividly—an essence, a sigh, a quick, visceral sketch to capture the deceptively-simple drama of nature revealing itself.  They are epigrams of life. I hope these little morsels of music and words fill you with the essence of the winter season and that I’ve been able to impart some of the enthusiasm and admiration I feel for this wonderful aspect of Japanese culture.

Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.522224). My Song Is Love Unknown is a known best as a hymn by Samuel Crossman, written in 1664. It is predominantly used as a hymn for Good Friday usually in a setting by John Ireland who evidently composed it over lunch one day. This is a completely new SATB setting of Crossman’s wonderful text by Colin Kirkpatrick. In this setting there are opportunities for alto and tenor solos though they can be sung tutti if more appropriate. The keyboard part is essential though there is an a capella section in the middle. The highest note in the soprano part is one A flat above the treble staff. This is an accessible arrangement with rich harmonies and soaring melodic lines. It is sure to be a success at Easter occasions. Other SATB titles in this series of three Easter canticles are Alone Thy goes forth, O Lord (Text by Peter Abelard 1079-1142) and A Time to Watch, A time to Pray (Text by John Mason Neale 1818-1866. In the audio sample, soprano is played by the flute, alto by the oboe, tenor by the clarinet and bass by the bassoon.

The music reminds me of little children skipping with glee under a bright blue morning sky. It needs to be sung with joy in the Lord, Who hears us when we call, forgives our sins, and gives us grace to love Him, keep his commands and do those things that are pleasing in His sight. It should be a wonder morning service anthem, but why not try it in the evening, too, in anticipation of meeting God at the beginning of the next day. The key to the style of this piece is rhythmic vitality. The 6/8 meter should be conducted in two, but singers (and the conductor) must feel the eighth note division of the beat as the composition's energizing rhythmic subtext. After the choir has learned the words, pitches and rhythms of the piece, have them let the text go for awhile, and replace it with the syllable doo for every eighth note value. That is, for every eighth note sing 'doo once; for every quarter note sing it twice; for every dotted quarter note sing it three times, and so on. You will hear some giggling from your singers. It is singable as a congregation hymn, as an anthem for unison voices, or as a vocal solo (range A below middle C to D a ninth above middle C). The text is by Canadian poet Frederick George Scott (1861-1944). The original title is Requiescant (Let them rest). The source is Christian Poetry in Canada (ed David A. Kent ed, Anglican Book Center and ECW Press, Toronto, Canada, 1993) page 54. Scott was a military chaplain during World War I. This poem was, in the poet’s own words, [b]egun while I was lying awake in a sleeping-bag under a tarpaulin at Brielen, near Ypres…. during the gas attack on April 22nd, 1915…. As I lay awake, I wondered what all our comrades who had passed over were doing now…. I finished the poem at a little village called Robec. As I wrote it, I could see through the window, my host, who was a carpenter, making a baby’s coffin. The text for The Kings They Came is from the poem Christmas Carol by Sara Teasdale. Teasdale (1884–1933) published this poem in 1911 and won the Columbia Poetry Prize (which was later known as the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry) in 1918. A 1926 New York Times Book Review described her poetry as musical and lyric, stating MissTeasdale is first, last, and always a singer. It is in this spirit of joyous and unstudied song (as a New York Times Book Review described Teasdale’s poetry in 1915) that The Kings They Came should be sung. The music is unpretentious, tuneful, and ever joyful.
