Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.VMW227). 9 x 12 inches.“Paris Without You is a piece for solo tenor saxophonist and orchestra with jazz quartet accompaniment. By way of introduction of the piece, in 2012, I met my wife, and very early on we had different trips planned. I was going to visit family and Cindy was going back to Paris, a place she had visited many times. So it was that we were almost literally a world apart. Upon both our returns, Cindy shared her many photos of Paris with me, a place I have never been. These photos were but a few that really made an impression on me and made me feel almost as I were there, even though Cindy was there (in one of the most romantic places in the world) as musicians would say, “solo. So the title of this piece suggests a telling of the story in pictures from her perspective.In performing this piece, it is preferable to have a tenor saxophonist who is equally comfortable in an orchestral setting as in a jazz quintet setting. Though all the jazz quintet parts are very specifically written, with either chord voicings and suggested solos, there is room for improvisation in these parts, but using a keen ear and direction to know when to align properly with the orchestra.In my recording of this piece, Maynard Ferguson Band alumni, Andy Weinzler is the featured tenor saxophonist. Many Western New York musicians came together to record this piece, and I thank them all for their incredible musicianship and willingness to perform this piece.

Duration 3:30 A Child Is Born is a truly beautiful picture—sacred or secular—of the Advent story painted from the enduring viewpoint of his mother, Mary. Written in 1969 by jazz trumpeter Thad Jones. The lyrics were added independently by Alec Wilder after he heard the Thad Jones - Mel Lewis Orchestra perform it. The song has been described by Bob Yurochko (with contributor Wynton Marsalis) in A Short History of Jazz as a “beautiful ballad of mainstream jazz. This arrangement begins with a quiet intro in which both the piano and the Bb Instrument touch very lightly on Silent Night. The easily memorized single stanza is sung first by the altos, who are then joined by and succeeded by the sopranos and then deftly handed off to altos, tenors and basses who are subsequently involved in each four-part cadence point well as other unison and two-part sections. The halved repeat of the stanza can be a very nice piano feature or, optionally a Bb instrument—Flugelhorn (even a muted Trumpet) a Bb Clarinet or a Bb tenor saxophone can supply the solo with the voices singing the very light background. The key change is kept simple, with a descending scale into the new key. The final section makes additional mention of STILLE NACHT as well as echoing the intro at the jazz ending. Still, the instrumental part remains optional and the chord symbols make it easy to include string bass or even gentle jazz guitar (drums on this should, of course be mainly light brushes). The vocal parts are limited to practical ranges and, while there is divisi in the soprano part, each voice is always easily sung). The accessible accompaniment has comparatively little movement in the left hand beyond the middle of a typical measure, especially when there are technical requirements in the right hand. #choral #jazz choral #church choral #liturgical choral.

Glenn Miller and his orchestra recorded the tune several times, with a 1942 version reaching number two on the US Billboard pop music chart.In 1960, rhythm and blues singer Etta James recorded an arrangement by Riley Hampton that improvised on Warren's original melody. Etta James' rendition became the title track on her debut album At Last! (1960) and was eventually inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999.This arrangement was originally for SSAA (also available) - and was subsequently transposed and rearranged for SATB (with one bass split at the very end). By way of introduction of the piece, in 2012, I met my wife, and very early on we had different trips planned. I was going to visit family and Cindy was going back to Paris, a place she had visited many times. So it was that we were almost literally a world apart. Upon both our returns, Cindy shared her many photos of Paris with me, a place I have never been. These photos were but a few that really made an impression on me and made me feel almost as I were there, even though Cindy was there (in one of the most romantic places in the world) as musicians would say, “solo. So the title of this piece suggests a telling of the story in pictures from her perspective.In performing this piece, it is preferable to have a tenor saxophonist who is equally comfortable in an orchestral setting as in a jazz quintet setting. Though all the jazz quintet parts are very specifically written, with either chord voicings and suggested solos, there is room for improvisation in these parts, but using a keen ear and direction to know when to align properly with the orchestra.In my recording of this piece, Maynard Ferguson Band alumni, Andy Weinzler is the featured tenor saxophonist. Many Western New York musicians came together to record this piece, and I thank them all for their incredible musicianship and willingness to perform this piece.

This piece is a delight to perform and a dramatic and exciting audience experience for any part of your choir's concert programme - but once you've heard it, you'll probably want to save it for the end of the concert! Listeners are left with the impression that they have heard the whole of the original work, somehow condensed into approx 8 minutes of choral magic!

It was featured in the film Sun Valley Serenade, released in the same year. Many other artists have recorded the song over the years, including Harry Connick Jr, George Benson, and Floyd Cramer.This is an SATB choir and piano arrangement that incorporates some scat-style accompaniment in the lower voices, with the melody sung by the sopranos. The opening will need some careful counting - fingers clicks might help - and throughout the rhythms should be sung with a relaxed, swing feel. The words need to be articulated clearly too. The piano accompaniment mirrors the voices in the main sections and provides block-chord accompaniment in the middle 8, but chord symbols also allow for some freedom from the score. The sheet music includes a SATB-only copy, so it could be performed a capella.
