I found the Emily Dickinson poem in early 2014 while searching for inspirational texts. After the first read, I knew I would like to set it to music someday. Later that summer I came across a composition contest that was looking for a piece about success/belief/hope. I started putting music to the text in late September. In October my mother was diagnosed with terminal bone cancer and she passed away a few days before Thanksgiving. Her passing affected me in ways I never expected. Music went from being the thing in which I could find solace, to the thing that reminded me of my mother's absence. I found myself unable to write my own music for quite some time. During the Lenten season of 2015, one of the Pastors at the church for which I work gave a sermon using this text. The sermon was particularly moving and I decided it was time to revisit the piece. The music was finished within 1 week. Just as my mother had done for me countless times, writing this piece gave me the hope and inspiration I needed to get through a difficult time in my life. I dedicate this work to my mother, Cynthia Marie Richards.

Hope is such a powerful thing that can push us through the toughest of times. In this poem, Emily Dickinson calls hope a feathered thing. It perches in the soul and sings without stoping. The singing is at the loudest when things are at their worst. Although hope is the central theme to the poem, the harsh conditions that are described in the poem was the driving force while writing the music. Creating a sound for the chillest day and the storm that could not abash the little bird was what really inspired me to write this piece. Something that stood out for me, was the use of dashes that breaks up the poem. I used rests to create these breaks. These rests are very deliberate to show these pauses of contemplation, almost struggling for the right words to describe a complex subject such as hope. At first the rests felt like a hindrance, where it felt natural for the music to flow, but now I cannot imagine the piece without it.

God's Been Good to Me is a song by New Zealand-Australian singer-songwriter Keith Urban. Keith was born in New Zealand in 1967 and later moved, with his parents, to live in Queensland, Australia. There he took guitar lessons and entered local talent competitions. In 1983 he was a contestant on the Australian TV talent show New Faces. A few years later, he began making inroads into the Australian country music scene.In 1990, Urban signed with record label EMI in Australia and released his first self-titled album. Then in 1992 he moved to Nashville, Tennessee, in the hope of furthering his career and seven years later released a self-titled American debut album. A single from this album, Your Everything, made him the first male Australian performer to reach the Top 10 on the US country charts. Several more successful albums followed.Whilst living in Nashville, Keith often used cocaine, but after reaching a low point in 1998, he became determined to stop using the drug. In January 2005 Keith met Australian actress Nicole Kidman. They began dating six months later and married in 2006.God's Been Good to Me is a reflection of the dark times that Keith encountered in Nashville and his thankfulness that those times were now behind him.This arrangement is available for SATB and SSA choirs as well as for High and Low solo voices.
