A unique and interesting setting of this timeless Christmas classic, using two of the 'other' favourite melodies that have been associated with the carol for many, many years.  The opening and final verses are set to the tune Mueller, while the middle verse utilises the ‘Old Normandy Carol’.  The use of major and minor modes, together with a final key change, add to the arrangements appeal, as does the integral piano part that is a feature of this arrangement.

Taking inspiration from the original and several other different covers of this song, I've written out what is probably one of my favorite arrangements I've written. It's sure to challenge your performers and keep your audience engaged from start to finish!It starts with a soft drone in the Basses that continuously adds chord tones and volume to build sonic intensity and set the tone right out of the gate! We then move on to a slowed down first verse with the melody supported only by chords in the choir. Vocal Percussion leads us into a tempo change and explosive snippet of the melody before the piece hits its stride. Lots of upbeats, syncopations, and altered melodic tones throughout adds a high level of difficulty to this piece. As we get to the end of this piece, the ensemble will suddenly alter time to a half time feel that not only adds to excitement but also helps to bring the piece to a dramatic closing.This is written for Solo voice and SSAATTBB choir and a Vocal Percussionist.As with most of my arrangements I leave many of the syllables blank to encourage the director/performers to put their own spin on the arrangement with their own choice of syllables! Suggested syllables in certain spots and all necessary melodic lyrics have all been included for you!I hope that you and your group enjoys my arrangement! This essentially appears as a single line in the first verse, becoming a two-part canon (by one bar) in the second verse, and finally a four-part canon (by half a bar) in the third verse. The imitative coda leads to ultimate resolution on an F major chord at the end. The work is highly accessible, and is designed for performance by good SATB choirs, able to effectively sustain such unaccompanied singing. Otherwise vocal lines, for SATB choir, retain the folk tune contour throughout, with fairly simple harmonies and a canon. Around this, the piano accompaniment weaves a set of characterful variations, as a commentary on each differing verse, which is always linked by a 2-bar 'turnaround'. The work explores aspects of both major and minor tonality, as well as modality (with the characteristic flattened seventh), thus working within and around the given folk idiom.
