If you’re looking for an up-tempo, minor blues swing with plenty of space for scatting and instrumental improvisation, then dig P.C.! This arrangement of the John Coltrane classic, which pays tribute to legendary jazz bassist and Miles Davis compatriot Paul Chambers, provides an exciting introduction, statement of the theme in varied textures, a challenging (optional) soli, and room for lots of energetic drum solos. Following an introductory figure reminiscent of Miles Davis and Victor Feldman’s well-known Seven Steps to Heaven collaboration, the arrangement features two optional background choruses to keep the blowing fresh and interesting. After the improvisation, the drums and piano drop out, sending off a challenging, optional soli (18 second mark in demo) featuring a doubled, walking vocal and acoustic bassline. As this section concludes, the acoustic bass drops out and the drums re-enter, propelling a fugal statement of the melody (25 second mark in demo). Following a return to the head, the arrangement modulates upward by whole step to its exciting conclusion. Piano, bass, and drums read off the included composite rhythm section part. The arrangement, which makes prominent use of sharp ninth chords during the head, is a great teaching tool for basses and altos in any vocal jazz ensemble! This is a sassy, up-tempo a cappella arrangement of Ray Charles' hit song! It's voiced for SAATB, and can be performed by ensembles of any size, with or without amplification. This is a great piece to work on with a vocal jazz ensemble for swing syncopations and part independence. Bass singers have the opportunity to work on their walking bass and vocal percussion skills.Performance notes are included with suggestions on how to incorporate improvisation and how to approach ensemble diction in a stylistically appropriate way.Intermediate choirs who perform this piece unamplified will have equal success. The style refers to the general sound of Middle Eastern music with the dance rhythm. The ancient origin of Holy, Holy, Holy is emphasized. The music presupposes wide use of improvisation in the accompaniment (extended refrains between the verses) and in vocal parts. With each new verse, the improvised line gets longer and more sophisticated. There is room for the competition of two singers (if the verses are divided among two of them). The ending should sound as sweet as possible.

The piece finishes in a blaze of glory with drum, choir and all pell mell! The percussion part has loose directions for improvisation and could also be played on many other world drums, improvised fiddle, or any other world dance instruments. .

Commissioned by All Classical Portland radio network to mark the occasion of the total solar eclipse in 2017, Body of the Moon was first recorded by Erick Vallé (vocal solo), Nancy Ives (violoncello), and Chris Whyte (percussion) with Resonance Ensemble, directed by Katherine FitzGibbon.The piece was broadcast across the Pacific Northwest of the United States as millions experienced the totality of the solar eclipse. The phenomenon of the eclipse is represented by the lyrical cello line as the choir gives voice to the words of Galileo Galilei (1564- 1642): ‘Vedere il corpo della luna/Behold the body of the moon!’ The bass drum represents the vastness of our solar system, and a lone vocal improvisation speaks to the personal experience of this magical moment. Galileo’s other phrase, ‘we had perpetual twilight and never darkness’, is a poetic description of experiencing the eerie phenomenon of a total solar eclipse. I began playing it unattached to any tune and I just liked the way the line descended in the left hand and how I had to find voicings in the right hand that made harmonic sense – like a puzzle. As I was playing around with this puzzle, thoughts of my father were swirling around in my head – I was at the end of a 4 year period of separation from my parents owing to the fact that I’m a Canadian expat living in the US and the borders were closed for a long time because of Covid, and then I had work visa issues and my parents were getting older before my eyes. They were also losing friends to cancer and other ailments and my dad, in particular, had experienced the loss of many close family members and friends during our separation and it was taking a toll. One day I sat down and played the now familiar-to-me ostinato but randomly I started to sing “Beyond the Sea†over it and it fit perfectly. I thought it a happy coincidence. As the days went on I committed to putting my ostinato with Beyond the Sea and the lyrics started to seep into my brain. I have, of course, heard these lyrics many times before, (who hasn’t seen Finding Nemo?) but the lyrics didn’t mean what I thought they meant… They’re NOT about the ocean, they are about my dad!!! Well, kind of… I realized, through careful reflection and by slowing the words down, that the lyrics are talking about a person in heaven who is patiently waiting for their partner to join them. Somewhere beyond the seaShe’s there watching for me…It’s far beyond the starsIt’s near beyond the moon And the lyrics end with them meeting, “We’ll meet beyond the shore, we’ll kiss just like before,†and the song ends with: “and never again I’ll go sailing.†It’s like the big bang went off in my head about why all these thoughts of my dad, and his friends, and this arrangement, and what it all meant suddenly just MADE SENSE and I was able to start formulating a plan. Performance Suggestions: The improvisation solo in the middle should be free of any traditional “scat syllables†and should be more of a lament. Listen to singers like Aubrey Johnson improvise on ballads for inspiration. An idea for that improv section might be to have a male singer start the improv, then a female singer joins (as if together in heaven) then they sing letter F together (warning: will cause tears…). All solo sections do not have to be sung as written – soloists can take liberties with the melody as the spirit moves.
