My family were early adopters on Compact Disc technology. Whilst my school peers in the late 80s and early 90s were collecting tapes for their VHS video recorders, my family were collecting hi-fidelity CD recordings of classical masterworks. Three of these CDs stick in my mind; a period instrument performance of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons performed by Trevor Pinnock and The English Concert; a recording of the 1812 overture which boasted Real Cannons (and also warned listeners against setting the volume too high because it might damage the equipment!); and A feather on the breath of God, an album of works by Hildegard performed by Gothic Voices with soloist Emma Kirkby. Thus began my life long love affair with the life and works of Hildegard. I have been performing this particular Hildegard chant O Virtus Sapientiae in solo piano recitals since around 2014. Basically, I have been freely improvising on it, so it’s different each time. Some ideas formed during those improvisations which have really stuck in my brain. I’ve transferred some of these into this a cappella work. This is a 10-minute long piece that traces the history of the song We Shall Overcome, using narration and excerpts of ten versions of the song to educate about injustice and inspire hope. Its history is traced from its probable roots in slavery, to a Methodist hymn, through Pete Seeger, the Freedom Singers, and Joan Baez, and all the way to the present day. The piece ends with the performers and audience/congregation singing through the piece one last time, a capella, organically improvising harmonies. There are several opportunities for short solos, and one short a capella quartet section. .

Voicing: SATB a cappella, with rhythm section (piano, electric bass, drums) Style: Bossa Nova This arrangement of Ray Conniff's Favorite Theme from Rachmaninoff's Second Piano Concerto will bring to mind the writing style of Clare Fischer for his 2+2 vocal groups. Though still a challenge, especially with the optional vocal soli, this Conniff-themed edition has been adapted from a more difficult version previously performed by Vocalogy on their 2005 Distilled release. The piece opens with a pulsating rhythm section figure as pianist, bassist, and drummer enter one by one. The wonderful moments of tension have been maintained beneath Rachmaninoff's soaringly romantic melody, and the wordless vocal provides an ethereal quality. With the optional soli, this is an Advanced level arrangement. There is room for improvising regardless of whether or not the soli is performed and, with no soli, this is an Advanced Intermediate arrangement.  Included individual piano, bass, and drum parts play from individual parts with chord symbols, slashes, and rhythmic notation. This public domain song has always been a favorite.  I first improvised a piano version and improvised a vocal solo.  I recorded that for a CD I made for my parents.  The choir arrangement came later.  I designed it as an introductory solo in free time, and the verses alternate with a piano solo, and a choir verse accompanied by only a bass line. Choirs may choose other means of performing this.  The choir arrangement is for a well-trained group, on a more advanced leve.It has never been recorded.  If you happen to like this and produce a performance I would love to hear the finished product.

The music presupposes wide use of improvisation in the accompaniment (extended refrains between the verses) and in vocal parts. With each new verse, the improvised line gets longer and more sophisticated. There is room for the competition of two singers (if the verses are divided among two of them). The ending should sound as sweet as possible.

If you’re looking for an up-tempo, minor blues swing with plenty of space for scatting and instrumental improvisation, then dig P.C.! This arrangement of the John Coltrane classic, which pays tribute to legendary jazz bassist and Miles Davis compatriot Paul Chambers, provides an exciting introduction, statement of the theme in varied textures, a challenging (optional) soli, and room for lots of energetic drum solos. Following an introductory figure reminiscent of Miles Davis and Victor Feldman’s well-known Seven Steps to Heaven collaboration, the arrangement features two optional background choruses to keep the blowing fresh and interesting. After the improvisation, the drums and piano drop out, sending off a challenging, optional soli (18 second mark in demo) featuring a doubled, walking vocal and acoustic bassline. As this section concludes, the acoustic bass drops out and the drums re-enter, propelling a fugal statement of the melody (25 second mark in demo). Following a return to the head, the arrangement modulates upward by whole step to its exciting conclusion. Piano, bass, and drums read off the included composite rhythm section part. The arrangement, which makes prominent use of sharp ninth chords during the head, is a great teaching tool for basses and altos in any vocal jazz ensemble! The piece finishes in a blaze of glory with drum, choir and all pell mell! The percussion part has loose directions for improvisation and could also be played on many other world drums, improvised fiddle, or any other world dance instruments. .

It’s a love song to God but it could also be to a woman. I’ve left it ambiguous so that people can take it how they wish. Basically, it’s just about a guy who’s searching. I’m a seeker. I think I’ll always be a seeker. The change of wording from 'Come on, let the sun' to 'The morning sun' is deliberate, based on singing wrong words to the album track as a child!
