Fountains of the Deep musically portrays the events of the Bible concerning the great waters in a tumultuous storm of notes thundering from the grand piano and percussion. Simultaneously, the choir calls out for help while being tossed by the tempestuous seas, swallowed by a great fish, and chased to the edge of the sea by Pharaoh.The text in Fountains of the Deep is a mixed narrative that combines scripture with an imagined exclamation at the cataclysmic events of the day. Still comes the rain, still comes the rain, never ceasing! Whether it was one man, thousands, or all of mankind, the Lord has chosen to use the great depths of the sea to do his Will. Cradle Song for SATB Choir and PianoWords by: William BlakeMusic by: Russell Ronnebaum About the piece:William Blake’s serene language inspired this dramatic setting of his poem Cradle Song. The piece opens with a constantly descending scale as a mother sings to her sleeping child. As more voices are layered in, the texture becomes increasingly lush, but still soothing. The third stanza of text is marked with peaceful harp-like figures (as thy softest limbs I feel) while the voices take over the calming decent into deeper, more peaceful sleep. The mother’s concern suddenly changes as the descending scale transforms and (the cunning wiles that creep) set in. Anticipation of escaping the terror of potential nightmares escalates as the ascending textures grow more tense and dissonant. The tension finally peaks with a breathless silence before resolving with (then the dreadful night shall break). The final phrase of the piece is a slightly transformed iteration of the opening vocal phrase and is a subtle nod to Johannes Brahms’ Wiegenlied: Guten Abend, Gute Nacht, more commonly known as Brahms’ Lullaby.Cradle Song was commissioned by Rincon/University High School Concert Choir in Tucson, Arizona; Directed by Mareena Boosamra.www.RRonnebaum.com

This composition has a Rondo form and it is a combination of the Sacred and the Secular and therefor suitable for both a church concert or any other concert where the folklore aspect is desired. All the names used are translated in English right above the text and there is some more background information on this special subject found in the actual score. Duration: just over 12 and a half minutes. The mp3 file is made straight from the sibelius file. This composition won first prize in the 2020 Donne in Musica International Composition Competition in Serbia. The composer is a member of TONO (the Norwegian copyright org.)
