GRACE DARLING: One of my full length family plays in the TYNE ONSTAGE series of original musicals. With Drama, Comedy and Song they offer a new source of material to any Producer, Director or Teacher in the Performing Arts looking for original stories with great songs, covering a wide range of musical styles. GRACE DARLING was known as the ‘Heroine of the Farne Islands’ off the Northumberland coast where she lived with her family in the Longstone Lighthouse. She became a household name when in 1838 along with ther father William Darling rowed out in a North Sea gale to rescue 9 passengers from the capsized paddle steamer Forfarshire. Honoured by royalty, her fame was short-lived as she died of Tuberculosis in 1842 aged only 27. In chapter two of Paul's letter to the Philippians, Paul begins speaking to his readers about encouragement, comfort from love, participation in the Spirit, and godly affection and sympathy for one another. He says, we are to count others as more important than ourselves. He pleads, Complete my joy by doing these things. From this point, Paul breaks immediately into this other known 1st century Hymn to Christ (Verses 5-11), which I have called, The Great Humility of Christ. The hymn text is a beautiful exposition of the Gospel; Christ in the form of God, did not hold onto (grasp) His equality with God, but humbled Himself and took on the human form of a servant (slave) and poured Himself out for all of mankind. The anthem is composed for SATB (a cappella) choir in two stanzas, with a bridge section and a coda. The piece is scored in D minor, but weaves between D minor and G Major (representing the dual natures of Christ-fully God and fully man). After the first stanza, regarding Christ’s taking on human flesh, the unthinkable happens; Christ humbles Himself in holy obedience to be put to death, even a humiliating and repugnant death on a cross. Here in the anthem we find the musical bridge between the two stanzas with the sopranos holding onto a single note (high D) followed by a cascade of dissonant suspensions, one voice handing off to the other, finally resolving in a descending scale.The second stanza declares God’s having exalted Christ as a consequence of His sacrifice, giving Him a name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth. The final coda (in G Major) trumpets the pronouncement that; Every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of the Father.

This piece, written for them in 2015, was inspired by those experiences and integrates spirituals that had special significance to me during my time in EOJ. There are quotations from Over My Head; Bye and Bye; My Lord, What a Morning; Great Day; and Oh, Freedom. During the climax of the piece, these spirituals combine into a moving tapestry of half-forgotten songs. The piece opens with the tune altered to G mixolydian mode. As the word exploited appears, a sinister-sounding E flat enters the harmony. Open octaves between soprano and bass show the emptying, followed by a shift to E phrygian mode with the word slave. Several dissonances emerge as the narrative gets darker. The flute and clà rsach represent chaos or hell with an aleatoric interlude of extended techniques involving tongue rams, flutter tonguing, multiphonics, spoken syllables, and lever glissandi. The harp then joyfully proclaims the new tonality of G major in a fanfare to introduce the text of praise and exaltation. The original source tune returns harmonically restored to G major.

Published by Vocal Works (A0.741923). It is difficult to find Christmas music that focuses on the role of Joseph, Christ’s foster father. That is one of the reasons I chose to set this text, it is a part of the story that is often left out. The other reason is that this it contains one of the first New Testament prophecies concerning Christ, the revelation that Jesus will save his people from their sins.
