The Old Palmer Song is a favourite Australian folk song that is meant to be sung in a rollicking style that reflects the excitement and anticipation of hardy Australian colonials setting out in search of gold. Following hard on the heels of the great California gold rushes (1848 – 1855) came the discovery of payable quantities of gold in Australia. The first gold rush in Australia began in New South Wales in May 1851 after prospector Edward Hargraves discovered gold near Orange, at a site he called Ophir. Other discoveries quickly followed, including those at Ballarat and Bendigo in the colony of Victoria. Then came Rosewood and Gympie (1867) in Queensland; the Gawler region in South Australia in 1868; and Halls Creek (1885), Kalgoorlie and Coolgardie (1893) in Western Australia. One of Australia’s richest alluvial goldfields was that of the Palmer River in far north Queensland. The rush to the Palmer began in 1873 and lasted for about three years. The goldfields were nearly 100 miles inland from the small coastal settlement of Cooktown and the early prospectors had a hard time of it just getting to the field. Leaving Cooktown they crossed the coastal mangroves, then on through dense tropical rainforest, into the more open eucalypt forest beyond and then across the dry, inhospitable and rugged country of the hinterland dissected by wide and deep rivers. And always there was the risk of meeting with fierce resistance from the Aborigines whose tribal land they were travelling through. At the height of the rush there were around 35,000 prospectors on the Palmer (including a great many Chinese). By the time the rush was over, the Palmer had yielded over 100 tons of gold! The Old Palmer Song is set to the tune of Ten Thousand Miles Away, a shore ballad/sea shanty that probably originated in Ireland in the early 19th Century.

The piece is based on a poem about a photograph called the Hubble Deep Field, an image made by NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. While making the image, astronomers pointed the telescope at a seemingly black and empty piece of space, then made time exposures lasting many days. The resulting photo shows ancient galaxies that existed in the universe billions of years ago. They are so far away that their light is only now reaching the telescope – millions, even billions of years after all their stars have died. In other words, while we see nothing in that piece of sky, the telescope can still see what used to be there. In the end, of course, we will never know what, if anything, is still there. Commissioned for the Combined Choirs of St. Joseph's School, Seattle, directed by Rick Boyle, who premiered the piece at Benaroya Hall's Nordstrom Recital Hall on May 6, 2004, in the second annual New Works New Hope concert for the benefit of Gilda's Club Seattle. The piece was revised in 2007 and the premiere of the revised score was given on November 16, 2007, by the Queens College Chorus, Cindy Bell conducting, at the Aaron Copland School of Music in New York. It was selected by the Portland Vocal Consort for their 2013 Best of the Northwest program. Duration ca. 6 minutes. Conductor Cindy Bell says, Driven by a refreshing text of American naturalist John Muir, Bartholomew has created an accessible work that flows easily through both key and meter changes, and features expressive, lyric melodies contrasted by exciting rhythmic drive. Song of the Mountains is almost cantata-like, or through-composed, in that each line of Muir's text receives equal and interesting interpretation. Occasional use of the triplet rhythm creates both a relaxing effect (grasses cease waving) and driving sense of forward motion (Vibrating!). Effective use of dynamics and interweaving of choral parts make for each section having a musical life of its own. Published by Richard St. Clair (A0.939853). This 7-minute unaccompanied motet for SATB choir sets the first ten verses of the Gospel of Matthew Chapter 5, sung in Latin. A translation is provided in the score. The general style is simple choral counterpoint, completely tonal and full of deep feeling. The text Beati... (Blessed are they) is always set with rising octaves in points of imitation reminiscent of 16th century vocal style. The final or 8th beatitude breaks open into doubled bass part, with secondary dominant harmonies bringing the motet to a stirring close.

The opening’s atmospheric and mysterious tone suggests a quiet mist over tranquil water, reflecting the trail of slaves through the Great Dismal Swamp in Virginia escaping captivity. The chorus is used here as tonal color while the organ moves slowly beneath as a winding, rippling river. As this ends, the music breaks into a faster motive utilizing an underlying mixed meter. With the words “Oh don’t you want to go…,†the phrases become shorter and more urgent. As the chorus proclaims “That promised land...,†the work comes to an animated climax, the organ then emerging as a solo, dancing and finally growing quieter to the choral entrance at “where all is peace.†The congregation enters singing the traditional melody while three part women’s voices add a harmonic descant commentary. Finally, returning to the opening mysterioso style, the congregation sings “I want to cross over into campground.†Duration: 5:00.
